For those of you who've moved in: Any advice for moving day?

Or "Moving Week" as it should be called?

I bought a large tupperware bin and started filling it with these items to keep WITH ME in the car on moving day:

New toothbrushes for the family

-Toothpaste

-Extra handsoap for the bathrooms at the new house

-A couple rolls of toilet paper

-A couple rolls of paper towels

-My cookbook (I just don't want it to be lost in the packing)

-Important paperwork (any unfinished bills from this house that need to be paid within the month)

-Dog Food

-Dog bowls

Anything else you can think of that we might want to keep "on hand" instead of packed away?

We'll have a suitcase for the family with a few outfits for each of us and toiletries.

Any tips on making the move easier (we're moving 500 miles)...

Any advice on unpacking?

Anyone want to come and unpack for me??? Or watch the kids while we unpack?

Finally, is there anyone interested in HANGING pictures and decorating once I get the boxes emptied?

No............? Hmmm. I tried. We're moving in 7 days. Yikes!

fairytalebaby, I did the long distance move 2 TIMES in the past 2 years!! It's hard, very hard and you will be tired! I am probably older than you, and that does make a difference!

It sounds like you are in pretty good shape. I wouldn't worry too much the first week about cooking! Just make sure you have a TV and video's for the kids - that was important "babysitter" during the move.

We just moved in 12 days ago - and it was a much easier move being 3 miles away from our rental. GOOD LUCK... don't forget to post lots of pictures when you are settled. BTW - I HAVE been hanging pictures and SHOPPING! I still need to finish unpacking about 15 more boxes!!

tinker, I've been thinking about you! I snuck a peek over at the Home Decorating forum (while dilligently packing, of course) and saw your gorgeous furniture pictures! Everything looks so beautifully put-together already.

As for our move, I'm 29...but the little teething baby monster who keeps me up all night (she's a night-nurser) makes me feel like I'm at least 80yrs old!

We have furniture arriving two days before us...as well as the cable company so there will be at least one tv installed and ready for the 6yr old to watch Noggin while we work!

As for my cookbook---y'all are going to think we're crazy but...........................we are expecting my Dad & Stepmom (along with all my Aunts & Uncles) to come and visit exactly 7 days after we arrive to our new home. My Dad & Stepmom own their own business and haven't been able to travel to meet their latest Granddaughter yet...and the only time their relief-manager could take over the store for them is at the end of June...a week after we move in!
Everyone will be staying at a hotel, but will be hanging out at our house for a BBQ and I can't wait to try out my new kitchen with people that I love so much (and haven't seen in so long).

"Back when the boys were young I was thinking that I would not want them to work while going to college but since have completely changed my mind on that. There is no guarantee of a job after they graduate but there will be even less of a chance if they have no real work experience" YES!! I'm a career advisor at the university level and I have observed, without exception, that kids without any job experience not only are a serious disadvantage but that they have weaker life skills. I'm impressed especially by kids who have been budding entrepreneurs: running a lawn care business, or babysitting or the gold standard-tutoring. Life guarding or camp counselors are great too; that shows someone who literally can be trusted with other people's lives. Working in a store or fast food restaurant--if someone ran the cash register that means s/he was trusted with the most important business tool of all: OPM-other people's money. And so on. Believe it or not, the kids with job experience, no matter how low level, also tend to be on the more successful academically and in terms of involvement. You know the saying "if you want something done, ask the busiest person you know." Lot of truth to that even for kids. However, I know that many parents, and we were in this group, feel that in HS kids' job is to learn. Especially in today's competitive world getting those grades and high test scores for college apps is critically important. Still, when I am reviewing resume drafts I always sigh a bit when one of my freshmen has *nothing* to list for work experience. Kids learn a lot from the most menial jobs and recruiters rank experience very highly because it teaches all those values that a boss wants to see: reliability, organization skills, character etc. And when I get a college junior or heaven forbid a senior who has never earned any money for him/herself, that is a major negative. Frankly, it creates the appearance of a spoiled kid lacking real world skills. And parents, let me give you an insider's tip: there are always a few hours a week that a college student can work. Trust me, even the most intensive majors have options that can be fitted into a tough academic plan. There are campus jobs in the library, or at the computer lab, or even as security officers in the dorms at which students can often study while they work. Carving out 5-15 hours weekly to work can be done and it should be done. IMO we baby boomer parents have created a whole structure around our college kids that makes them what I once heard called "dependent independent". By setting up a young adult, and at ages 18-22 that's what they are, with a prepaid life including housing, food, and expenses you are not helping them learn and grow. Instead you're hindering your child from learning the life lessons of independence, financial management and responsibility. In our personal situation my two college age kids both go to the university at which I work so the tuition is covered. They both have chosen to live at home, which means there are no additional housing costs. If they want to eat with us it's fine and I will purchase food if they ask me to pick up items when I grocery shop. Otherwise, their expenses are their responsibility. Our son has a truck and pays for the upkeep including maintenance and insurance. Both kids work part time and their spending money pays for all entertainment, travel, clothes, and incidentals. It's so important to start learning to let go and as others have said, that means letting adult children figure out how to be functional adult with all that entails. Ann

Forget the rosin paper. If it gets wet, it falls apart and the most commonly available rosin paper (peachy-red color) will bleed. It also slides too easily and tears, becoming a real safety hazard. Look to getting either Ram Board (Google for their website) or Fiberrock heavy paper from USG Corp. Both come in rolls and can be cut and taped to fit any room or hall. They don't stain and they are heavy enough to protect against rocks in shoes or dropped objects. The Ram Board is heavier and will provide better protection. Also, look into making sure that your appliance delivery folk will bring an air sled, instead of an appliance dolly. Air sleds slide under the appliance and, with a small blower motor, lift the appliance on a cushion of air. I've moved washing machines, clothes dryers and 60" duel-fuel Wolf ranges by myself using an air sled and never left a mark. Best of luck, Shaughnn

I put a lot of things back into my drawers and cabs before the counters were installed. I ended up having to pull a lot of stuff back out so that the installers could attach the counters. As for furniture, our kitchen opens into our family room and I couldn't wait to get those pieces back in again. But, when our counters were installed, we had to push everything over to one corner of the room so that the installers could maneuver the pieces in and out safely and easily. The doors stayed open for hours that day. I think you can move some things back in, but not everything. And, watch out for your rugs, as they could trip up an istaller carrying a large piece of counter. They can also get filthy from these guys walking back and forth over them.

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! Such wonderful tips you've shared, and now I'm feeling a bit more confident about the whole thing! I work best when I have an organized process going on. It's when things become jumbled and chaotic that I tend to feel like I'm going to lose it. And speaking of losing it - yesterday, DH and I were working together and found that we kept moving things. The scissors - which were JUST RIGHT HERE not five minutes ago, had somehow taken flight and flown two rooms away. The packing tape ... where'd the flippin' packing tape run off to? It went on like that for quite some time, until we determined it would work best if DH would go out and mow the lawn and leave me to the packing on my own. Sometimes having a helper isn't much ... help. Our boxes are all broken down into flat pieces at this point, and DH is going to "make" two or three of them that I can work on each evening. I think that methodically working my way through the breakables and getting them all boxed up will be a big load off my mind. I know this will all come together and we'll get it done. I appreciate the encouragement and the info shared here -- definitely ideas we will be putting to use as we get further along in this.

Put those family members to work! :) Just pace yourself, you cannot possibly be company ready in a week so don't kill yourself trying. Just try to enjoy your new home and the process of getting settled in and then enjoy your family when they arrive. You get to start making wonderful memories in your new home right away. Congratulations and of course post lots of pictures!

fairytalebaby, oh to be 29 again!! (I am turning 47) LOL

Thank you for the comments on the furniture. Amazingly (I worked my butt off) I was pretty much unpacked after 1 week. I *COULD* have been close to all unpacked if I wasn't obsessing about furniture!! LOL

Our 6 year old is in summer camp and I would not have been able to get done what I got done had I had him here, so it will be a challenge especially with 2. But don't worry a thing about it! Your parents want to see that baby more than anything else! Just work on the kitchen and main room, leave the bedrooms, dining room to last.

I will tell you I LOVE living in our new home and waking up here. It feels perfect! I know you'll be feeling the same in just a week! I am addicted to this site and alays found time to read between a few boxes! LOL

The move 500 miles... is it to move closer to family?

First-aid kit with a medic-spray on top. Container of handwipes. Scissors. Insurance information. Your address book. Pen and paper notebook for notes [or for the kids to play with]. Books, magazines, and games for the kids. A roll of trash bags. A spray bottle of 50/50 alcohol/water for quick clean-ups. Terry hand towels, at least one for each sink.

Put a case of bottled water in the car. If you drink coffee, put the coffeemaker, filter, a couple pre-measured bags of ground coffee along with the mugs, spoons, sugar, etc in a box to be brought in the car. A box of breakfast fixin's along with bowls and plasticware. If you possibly can, the crockpot filled and ready to cook a one-dish meal, for the first real meal. You can prepare the crockpot in advance and freeze it. Carried in a cooler, it will very slowly defrost during the trip, and will be ready to plug in upon your arrival. A new broom and dustpan. The vacuum [if you don't have whole-house].

Remember that it is not a waste of time to label each box, in detail. Be sure the movers put the boxes each in the assigned room.

If it is at all possible, hire a babysitter to watch little kids while the actual moving is underway.

Everyone has their own method, but I found it easiest to unpack in this order (assuming rugs and carpets are placed): Refrigerated and frozen foods. Beds set up and linens put on the bed. Bath towels hung [everyone can unpack their own toiletries]. Kitchen utensils; pans, plates, silverware. Pantry supplies. Help kids hang/drawer clothing. Hang/drawer adult clothing. Put away the rest of the bathroom supplies and linens. Once the basic living needs are in place, THEN one can unpack and place furniture for everywhere else. Don't remove the furniture's bubblewrap/quilting until it is in the place you want it. Keep handy a misting-spray bottle of water to counteract static as you remove the plastic-wraps. Vacuum everything [yes floors and walls too] after the furniture is unwrapped. After the furniture is placed, the accessories and books can be done, but allow yourself to take time with them.

Let others help you. Young folks can stack the linens on the shelves and arrange the canned goods (you can always alphabetize later). Have a big folk do the unwrapping and final placement of furniture. Have another big folk wash windows and sweep the sidewalk and driveway. Have a sure-handed person unwrap delicate items. Have a strong person carry all the boxes of non-seasonal and holiday stuff to the attic [or where ever]. Put a kid in charge of wiping up fingerprints from the doors with the alcohol/water spray and a soft towel; same kid can wipe down the dressers, tables etc with a soft clean cloth. A kid can line the drawers and shelves. Put another kid in charge of [a copy of] the to-do list ~ pre-teens are great at this.
