Do I have spyware, mailware?

I was on a site about tuning up windows xp and it mentioned to type into my explorer bar %windir%\temp then delete all the contents..Well I did this but I have about 3 things that will not delete..Says they may be being used on another program or person..Doing a search on the files names seems to bring me to forums about removing mailware ect.. here is the file names I have in this folder..

Perflib_Perfdata_228

Then the site mentions to type in the exporer bar %temp%

and delete all the files in there..Which I did but then I have about 6 files here that I am not allowed to delete..

Anyone know what any of these are or if they are spyware type stuff?

I downloaded the spybot search & destroy and ran it last night..Only came up with some tracking cookies that I did have spybot delete thinking it might be these files but they are still here..

Clean out your temporary internet files and temp files.

Download TFC by OldTimer See link below please a window will open safe the file to desk top. the run it as instructed below.

Double-click TFC.exe to run it.

Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator

TFC will close all programs when run, somake sure you have saved all your work before you begin.

* Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process.
* Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two.
* Please let TFC run uninterrupted until it is finished.

Once TFC is finished it should restart your computer. If it does not, please manually restart the computer yourself to ensure a complete cleaning.

those are all legit file names that are being used by other programs .. they'll disappear at boot mostly.

look like all normal files to me
windows wont let you delete files that are in use,
if it did you'll crash something and mabe make a mess.

Perflib_Perfdata_420
Perflib_Perfdata_228 standard windows performance library files.

forget what the ~DF files are but normal windows files.

Jet is probably one of your programs.

Configurations is all, that are in use since start of the program or windows boot or simply opening task manager on performance files.

But it really sounds to me like his email has been taken over if not his entire pc. He should discontinue use of that email address for anything personal or sensitive. Plus consider that anything that he did have in there is now up for grabs. If I were him I would close that email account, let his ISP know about it, and set up a new one with a very secure password, which is NOT a real word but a combination of letters and symbols. NEVER make a password out of a real word they can be cracked in seconds. To see if his pc has been taken over and is now a part of a zombie bot owned by some hacker I would highly suggest he go to one of the Pro Tech Help forums and let them tell him exactly what to install and how to check. They are excellent at this kind of thing. Well absolutely no one should be online without adequate protection these days, too many scoundrels out there by far. The 2 most popular seem to be Superantispyware and Malwarebytes. Be careful installing and stay with the free version, Malwarebytes is free but does not appear to say so as you install. I run one or the other perhaps weekly, more if I feel I have visited doubtful places. That is a very smart move taking your scanner when visiting rellies, at least that way they feel safe in that the photos remain in there possession. Also you get the chance to discuss each and perhaps make notes because no one thought to write on the backs of the photos. On the printing issue have you considered having them done for you? This can be done online at a large number of places including your local supermarket and/or pharmacy. You then collect them the next day or whatever the rules are at any given location. This to me is cheaper than using your own ink and I think their ink quality is somewhat better than we get for our printers. I found scanning slides very trying but that was a few years ago and the equipment was not as good as we have now. You say the scanner is expensive and no doubt it is. But when I started the local computer joint charged $10 for the first scan and $8 for any others done at the same time. It made sense to buy a scanner and save a bundle, you have to decide how many scans you need to do then decide on which route. Photo editing for tears, bends and scratches is very interesting but time consuming and a steep learning curve at the outset. I enjoy that stuff, in fact I just removed a no longer son in law from the middle of a family group for a lady.

Dennis, thanks for a well laid out list of problems. It does help those who feel they can see some or all of your problems. AVG is by far the most popular free anti virus and I doubt that is your issue. I would not remove that one. Spyware Doctor I know nothing about. If you have the original CD or the download stored on your computer you could remove it entirely using the Add/Remove and see if that helps at all. Superantispyware and or Malwarebytes could be alternatives to trying Spybot Search & Destroy. If you use Spybot S&D be sure it is in fact that program and not a sound alike rogue program. Have you ran any cleaners at all? Not registry cleaners but the Disk cleanup in the Accessories/System Tools folder of XP. Try that and a defrag, it will help modestly. Do you have Google or Yahoo toolbars and are they allowed to run in the background? The Google Toolbar has either 3 or 4 entries in your Startup and using your resources. Click Start click Run type msconfig click OK click the Startup tab Now check each of these items and decide if they do in fact need to run. Google each entry before deciding to stop one because if you stop the wrong ones the computer may not start again. If you stop any you need to reboot. During the reboot you will get a dire warning, do not be alarmed, place a check mark not to see it again and continue the booting.

Thanks for all of the info..

As for Jet Audio..I am not aware of using it or have used it..However with the whole family using this computer its hard to keep track..That is partly why I am cleaning house on it and am going to be setting it up so everyone other than me cannot make any changes and will be limiting what they can do on it..

the best free program you can add to your security programs is malwarebytes it is a much better program than spybot, I would get it, update and run the full scan once a week or so.
