laptop mouse slow to move

When I first start up it is fine, but after a few hours it slows down to the point I can't make it to the shut-down mode.

When I do shut it down and restart it works fine, but this is getting annoying! It is a Dell Latitude D5 with XP and Firefox running.

Any ideas?

Sorry Owbist, I should have been more clear. This is a laptop so I move the cursor with my finger.

Would it be better to buy a wired mouse?

Thanks guys! I'm relieved to hear that BME grows faster than I thought and a bit dismayed that Mighty grows so slow. These two little guys were expensive and are so tiny. We are planning on moving from UT to Florida in two years and if these guys grow that slow I might just take them with me as I've really been wanting these two for a long time and I would hate to start from scratch. I plan on leaving them in the ground even though we do not have any squirrels in our yard. Only problem we have are racoons and they don't seem to bother our plants (just our ducks). Is there a particular reason why you would need to pot them up? I don't mind having it in the ground due to it's size as I can just plant some annuals around it. They are both planted in front of my hydrangeas and they tend to steal the show anyways.

Problem with a Wireless mouse

DA, I have not checked the Microsoft website for this problem. The manufacturer is Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse 2000. When my youngest son helped me build the last computer, he bought the keyboard and mouse along with the other parts. It was put together in Key West in 2006. But it crashed and I wasn't able to get it going again so I bought another Desktop at Walmart when they had one on sale after Thanksgiving. I only paid 350.00 plus tax for it. Dcarch, I am talking about the mouse used with the desktop, I can not disable a touch tablet because there is not one on the desktop. I was using the laptop to post about the problem. Laptop does not have the problem since I use a Logitech M205 model Notebook mouse with the laptop.

Happy to report that yesterday I drove the Jeep for the first time. Easy peasy. Going out again for the next three days - grocery shopping at Walmart, two dr's appts. the next two days. A friend is going w/me today, but after today, I'll be solo flying. Hip is soooooo much better, but the old back is the problem, which never gets better - just worse. Still thanking God for my quick healing - just three months ago, I didn't think I'd be this far along. Thanks for y'all's prayers and concerns. Keep up the good work, mosaicists - you're still the best.

Regardless of brand, be sure your laptop has an HDMI port (for an external monitor), an Ethernet port (for wired internet) and at least three USB ports (2 for external keyboard and mouse and one for an external drive). During these times, I use Zoom a lot and connecting my laptop to my 55" TV is a blessing, and I hate the keyboard and mouse substitutes on the laptop itself.

I just went and found an old corded mouse and it works great. Still, If you have an answer I would love to hear it!

Just curious, are you using this laptop on your lap or a desk..if on your lap or another soft surface, you could be causing heat issues because you may be blocking the fan vents on the bottom/sides..What you are refering to is called the touchpad, not a mouse...

I am going to go out on a limb here and believe we are talking about the screen pointer. That is called a cursor.

I like Gene's heat thought.

Also, quite often a slow responding "mouse" is a result of lack of system resources. It could be the same here with your laptop's "cursor". In both cases as multi-tasking activities amass perhaps the system can't keep up. A reboot then creates a reset and everything starts over fresh.

You might want to take a look in the startup as to what is running,

Download the touch-pad driver from the dell site and install it or install it from the driver CD you got.
If already installed than select repair at the time of re-installation.
