Master Bath Redesign Help Needed

Happily, our third and final child is a college graduate (read: no more tuition and housing expenses!)and we can finally address our absolutely horrific master bathroom. This thing is so bad NOBODY except immediate family has ever seen it. Yes, I'm sure we'll miss the glass slider that goes outside from the sunken tub/shower--what were they thinking?!

The first picture is the current layout.

The second is what we have to work with after expanding about 4 ft into the LR. We could use the closet for bath expansion, but then a fourth BR would become the new closet. I don't think I need that much closet.

We had some plans sketched, but decided the exterior wall bump-out isn't worth the permit process hassle so we need to rearrange the layout. On the attached the white "x" is not part of the room. The red is the new closet area. The blue is what we have to work with for the bathroom.

Please offer some layout suggestions to us. We want a steam shower, don't care about a tub, and would like to leave the toilet in the same position since we are on a slab foundation. THANKS SO MUCH in advance for your help. The ideas are always so helpful on gardenweb. I am looking forward to finally being able to actively participate in the forums!

Hey, Jubilante, could you please post some dimensions, so folks know what you're working with? Also, I don't see a door to the bathroom in the second pic....is the entrance up for discussion, or are you trying to keep it in the same place?

Just off the top of my head, I would consider moving the sink to where your tub is now, and putting the shower in the bump-in to living room area. But it's hard to say without dimensions, etc.

Yes, dimensions would be nice (blush).

The door would have been where I have the toilet, so it needs to be relocated.

Dimensions: 10.5 ft from toilet wall to outer wall
by shower.
7.5 ft ext. wall (from wall on bottom left
to white "x")
15 ft with the living room bump out

Well, to add a bathroom, you have to subtract space from somewhere else or make the house bigger. If your target for space reduction is the master bath, then what about pushing the laundry room straight up into where the shower is now? Re-orient the door and re-arrange the fixtures in the new, smaller space. The laundry room might have to shrink to accommodate a decent sized bath, but that could work. If you have to increase the footprint, you could do this by bumping the whole RH wall out even with the master suite bump-out. I would ask: how important is it for your parents to have a bathroom that opens from their room? If the other bedroom is going to be an office, and your daughter's room will be downstairs, is it likely that anyone else will be using the bathroom at the same time? Perhaps, if they live with you (or are you just talking visit?), the 3rd bedroom could be their den, with the chairs and TV, giving them a 2-room suite. Also, the linen closet in the bathroom could be eliminated to make the BR closet bigger.

I appreciate all of the feedback, everyone! I love discussing architecture and "space". The half wall between the tub and vanity is purely aesthetic/spacial. I was trying to define a "vanity zone" without closing off the tub area, and I thought that the half wall was a good solution. It's kind of creating a glass tile backsplash for the vanity. All I would gain by removing the half wall is 2 or 3 inches of countertop on either side of the trough sink. And knowing me, I would send something flying off of the vanity edge into the tub. Hope it wouldn't be my electric razor while the tub is filled! I did have the room mocked up without that half wall, and it just "didn't look right" if that makes any sense. I will certainly play with the idea more, though.

We're adding a slightly larger master suite (20x26) that also includes reconfiguring the original space to create a hallway entrance next to an existing hall bath. Our architect configured the space so that the new master bath abuts the existing hall bath, presumably to minimize the plumbing work etc, as in the 2nd sketch by @er612. She also aligned the new master closet with the existing space which just helps as a sound buffer. The rest of the layout was decided based on views - optimal placement of windows, strategic placement of the bathroom door, having wall space for a TV if you want that.

It looks like one large mirror would most likely work the best here. If you had two sinks then you could easily do two mirrors.
