Vista slow

I have a new Lenovo computer and have installed Vista into it. I find that when I first turn it on, it takes nearly 15 minutes to boot up. I have done a virus check and did not find anything. Has anyone got any suggestions so that I can boot it up quicker. I think that 15 minutes seems like a long time.

Vista slow boots sometimes from Firewall & Virus protection.

You said NEW and YOU installed Vista ? Anotherwords a call to support is not supported or costly ? I would think they have upgrade to vista package of new drivers and a BIOS.

My toshiba vista laptop is only a couple months old and they caution and offer a different bios files for Vista and XP. They just came out with a new one moments before SP1 & one of the updates was,,, fixes sometimes 'seems' to hang at boot .

I live in rural America myself and have to deal with the same high-speed deprivation. You may consider what I have done; disable the automatic Vista updates and anti-virus updates. Yes, this applies the pressure to do the update checks manually, but that is the price we have to pay. The plus is we can do the updates at our convenience. Also, make sure all your other applications which offer an automatic update are configured not to check. As far as off-line speed, the first thing to check is applications running in the background. Yes, Vista has the ability to configure the Startup. However, I recommend the free, user-friendly application WinPatrol. Once installed "Scotty" will appear in the Vista Notification Area. Click on him and a multi-tabbed report will appear. Select Startup and determine what is running and of those what is not necessary. WinPatrol offers the ability to disable anything not necessary. DO NOT select the remove option. Any decision you make is easily reversable if needed. DA

You have to dedicate some time to playing with the machine just to find where things are. My new HP computer has its own Help Center with a "What's New in Vista?" guide.

one good program that I use that will do a good uninstall of anything you may have on your pc you want to get rid of but ALSO has a feature to show you what is running at startup and with simple clicks lets you change those from on to off and vice versa is Revo uninstaller, it is free. Revo Uninstaller on their site you can click on some screenshots to show you exactly what it will look like and they have good step by step directions on how to use it. PM2 - I just want to clarify that the reason my husband may not be able to get XP drivers for his laptop is not because Microsoft is not supporting XP. They continue to support XP and constantly issue new updates. The issue is that there might not be XP drivers that are compatible with other things in his laptop. Now I don't know enough to know what those things are - is it hardware on the laptop, other software they've installed that doesn't have XP drivers. I don't fully comprehend the problem, but it's not that Microsoft isn't supporting XP. I hope somebody more knowledgeable will correct me if I'm wrong. I don't want to give prairiemoon2 incorrect information. I share your frustration that Microsoft would issue software that is so problematic that they even write documentation on ways to deal with the problems. I'm also frustrated when I have to get software fixes from other companies to deal with Microsoft problems. (I just had lots of trouble updating XP on an old computer of my daughters. The updates would not install - and nothing on Microsoft site - or from my computer tech guy's discussions with Microsoft turned up a solution. The solution came from third-party software - recommended to me here on this forum.) Lynn.

"New" but, Vista compliant? I'd think any computer that isn't old stock, over a year old, would be sold with Vista already installed.

If you have, as I do, a computer that came with XP installed, and a "free" upgrade to Vista, I'd stay, and have stayed, on XP.

I am with the why would you go from xp to vista group!
Man I look daily for new pc options that still come with xp because so many people want xp NOT vista and it is getting hard to find new systems with anything other than vista.

My only advice would be go back to xp.

IF you do not have a LOT of ram you will have difficulties with vista.

I spent about 10 hours with Vista at the start of the year. What you are describing is the way Vista works normally. I'm with the others, stick with XP. Or do what I did, get an Apple iMac and be done with it!
Best decision I ever made, just wish I had made it years sooner.

Mystic, you were asked to supply information about your computer, ie model, amount of memory, etc and havent. How is anyone supposed to help if you dont answer

My Vista boots to desktop from the push of the power switch in 40 seconds flat - you can instantly open ie and surf the net and other simple things while everything else continues to load over the next maybe minute and a half.

For my opinion;;
Vista works almost just like XP, with a quicker boot here. Not a whole lot of difference after you use it a month or so figuring out where the same old things are and personalizing all those little tweaks - and then it ends up looking and acting just like xp.
Seems to run the same quickness wether 1gb or 3gb memory with a light load for things like browsing, email, and the basics.
