AVG Free 9

Using XP Pro, have AVG 8.5 now and the Windows Firewall...

Anything to know before I install AVG Free version 9?

I watched the video for the paid version of AVG and it mentions a firewall, I'd prefer to use the Windows one and I'm hoping they don't have one in the Free version, does it... Also I have no intention of using the Yahoo search, please tell me I won't have to use it???

No problems with v9.0.791. The link below will take you to the change log for the current version and if you wish you can look at the change logs of the prior versions released since your 8.5 via the side bar offering.

I have had AVG on this system since I purchased it three years ago and have never been mandated to have Yahoo on it.

As far as the XP firewall, it has been recommended for some time that a user replace that firewall, which is one-way, to an alternative two-way firewall.

What was the previous Anti Virus program installed? That usually needs a special uninstall tool to be used. Tell us the Anti Virus and we can provide the correct removal instructions if they were not followed.

If you are indeed 32-bit: Open the AVG interface. On the Toolbar select Tools>Advanced Settings. In the appearing window on the left side click on the plus in front of Update. Click on Manage. On the appearing right panel select the lower bar Revert Virus Database to Previous Version. If all goes well and the problem was only a corrupt dat file this could resolve your concern. However, if the concern is a by-product of the recent version upgrade you will have to remove AVG entirely and re-install. Be sure to use the removal tool. If you had no problems until recently I wouldn't go back to v9. The prior version before the recent upgrade, 10.0.1191, should be just fine. Da Here is a link that might be useful: AVG 10.0.1191

I am strongly echoing zeps warning about combo fix this is a tool that is ONLY to be used by the malware experts with very specific instruction for each individual and specific to each machine and infection. Using combo fix improperly can leave you reformatting the pc. All of the support forums provide that warning prior to giving instruction for use. It means they are basically loaning you the program for 30 days to see if you like it. After that you will be expected to buy or remove it. You probably would not be allowed to update for too many days past the 30 day period. If you use my link just pay attention and stay with the free version. Thx Ravencajun, I'll use this scan. I am always very careful with surfing, ditto on email! Grady it is the server. They flash anote and give you 60 sec notice. And I do supposedly have accelerated download...Hah! Very frustrating night, last. I downloaded the Avira only to have it finish and tell me there was an error and to download it again. Then decided to try AVG, downloaded just fine, but wouldn't install. Told me the installation files were corrupt and to download a fresh copy! grrrrrrr. I guess I'll try downloading it again tonight! In the meantime on to the on-line scan.

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner... Life has been getting in the way of my computer time... lol

Thanks for the info DA... One thing I really wanted to know was if I had to uninstall version 8.5 first and if there's any special way to do it... I poked around the AVG site and didn't see anything about uninstalling the old one but it took me over 20 minutes to find anything about the free version, by then my brain had turned to mush... lol

I am really surprised that it hasn't upgraded through the application itself. Mine has regularly.

Unless mandated by the manufacturer, I always recommend a clean install. This reduces potential conflicts and eliminates unnecessary, obsolete code.

Another quick question... My brother-in-law has McAffee and is going to switch over to AVG... Would you happen to know if there's any special instructions for un-installing it, like there is with Norton's?
