I just went to www.live.com, clicked on 'hotmail' at the top, signed in (username @live.com -- must have that part ! and password). No problem. Not sure why it would be giving you trouble, ilmbg. Maybe try signing it with your username@live.com and username@hotmail.com just to see if there's a difference.

Re: Gmail: I can't speak with any authority, however, I did recently try using Google Apps (which uses Gmail basically) to host email for my domain. I only used it for about a month and it lost three saved drafts I was working on ! Poof ! And once, when I had two saved drafts in the drafts folder, it lost one of them and duplicated the other (so I still had two drafts, just not the right ones). ...sigh... Well, some people love Gmail and some have issues with it. I guess I'm in the latter group. :-(

there are lots of free email sites out there, you have to choose the one you like. I have used hotmail for many many years and still have it and use it daily, it has gone over to the windows live version now but I still sign in with my regular hotmail username, address and password.

I have a gmail account and like it fine, it is set up quite a bit differently than most other email clients which is why some like it a lot and why some don't. I have never had any problems with my gmail at all and I have had it since way back when it very first came out in beta. I do like that gmail is very easy to set up in Thunderbird.

I have a yahoo email account but never liked yahoo so don't use it.

A couple of other ones you might try that are good are www.inbox.com and www.gmx.com they both give a very large free email.

I don't recommend Hotmail to anyone. Gmail has a purpose but I wouldn't want it as a primary email program. Too many people have called me and said they were dumped with spam almost immediately after signing up. I like Thunderbird as it is dependable and easy to use. Out of the loop but still downloadable and very easy to use is Eudora 7.1

I have had Hotmail for as long as I can remember. Yes, they have had short-term problems when they upgraded servers, changed presentation and during site upgrading. These problems were minimal and not long lasting.

I currently have four accounts and NONE of them have a spam concern other than a rare e-mail. Of course I attempt to be responsible with them. If you register at all kinds of sites and sign up for who-knows-what you are going to get spam no matter where you are.

You might want to check out these Email Addresses for a list of reviewed, free, web-based email providers. And check the links at left of the page for other things (like pay services, the email discussion forum (very helpful !), etc.).

In my case, even though I know in the internet world there really is no such thing as privacy, I like to use services that at least have the appearance of privacy, namely those which have a secure login AND a secure email session (showing 'https' in the address bar): Fastmail, Lavabit, EuMX.net, Gmail (if you select that option in 'settings'), etc. AFAIK, Hotmail/Live and Yahoo only have secure logins. Don't know about AOL/AIM.
