Internet options

When I open my control panel and click on Network and internet options there are two check marks there and nothing will open. Double clicking does nothing. How can I fix this? Also it seems internet explorer is gone.

Reboot the computer first. If that does not resolve it do a System Restore. Hopefully nothings missing there either.

System Restore:

Click > Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Click on System Restore and restore the computer to an earlier time.

Would you let us know what operating system this is? If it's Vista or windows 7 there is also a repair your computer option in the advanced boot options menu. If the above mentioned does not work that would be the next thing to try. Unfortunately XP does not have that option.

I did reboot, no luck and yes I have xp, I have also done a system restore.

I would not get Internet on a cell phone as my only resource. Not only would it be too hard to type using the onscreen keyboard but reading the teeny screen is difficult too. Oh.. I did not mean it like that. I use a Tracfone that doesn't even have a camera on it! I'm still in the ice age I guess. Some people here were taking about a way to get internet on your home computer with your cell phone somehow. (I do realize I'd have to go with a different cell phone than the Tracfone to do this). The phone guy just left a little bit ago. He said there was some corroded wiring and moisture in the box outside. He rewired some things and switched to a different connecter and all is good for now. I'll have to wait until the next big rain before I can be sure though. I'd still like the info on the internet through the cell phone that Flamingo or someone was talking about a few months ago. I want to be prepared if I start having issues again. Thanks!

These are instructions from Microsoft. I include them here only because it can be frustrating to find them at Microsoft when needed. 1.Start Internet Explorer (if it is not already started). 2.Empty the contents of the Temporary Internet Files folder. To do so: a. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options. b. Click the General tab. c. Under Temporary Internet files, click Delete Files. d. When you are prompted to delete all temporary Internet files, click OK. 3.In the Downloaded Program Files folder on your hard disk, remove the files that are listed as either Unknown or Damaged. To do so: a. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options. b. Click the General tab. c. Under Temporary Internet files, click Settings. d. Click View Objects. The list of program files that are downloaded to the SystemRoot\Downloaded Program Files folder on your hard disk appears in the Downloaded Program Files window. e. In the Status column, note the files that are listed as either Unknown or Damaged. Remove these files. To do so, right-click the file, and then click Remove. f. When you are prompted to confirm the removal, click Yes. g. Close the Downloaded Program Files window, and then click OK two times. 4.Save an image in Internet Explorer to test and determine if the issue is resolved. If the issue continues to occur after you remove all downloaded program files that are listed as Unknown or Damaged, try removing the other downloaded program files that are on the list. Note: The next time that you need one of the files that you removed from the Downloaded Program Files folder, you will receive a prompt to download the file to your hard disk in Internet Explorer.

Sounds like you're describing .64 Mbps? Put another way, ,that's 640 kilobits per second and inadequate to stream video. That's pretty slow and pretty poor for a DSL connection, perhaps because of your distance from the hub or bad neighborhood wiring. You'll need maybe 8X more throughput (.6 * 8 = 4.8 Mbps) for consistently good streaming. The Netgear ADSL device you're describing is a combo Modem and Router. This modem works only for a DSL internet signal. For a cable signal, you'll need a cable modem (it's different) and a Router , or a combo Cable Modem/Router similar to what you have now but expressly for use with a cable signal. Comcast rents these, or you can buy them from any seller (including Amazon). There's nothing special about any cable company's signal, they're all broadly compatible with all the current equipment. I think you could probably use the router part of the DSL combo if you wanted but you do need a purpose-built cable modem connected to the Comcast signal wire. When I switched to cable, I bought a modem and continued to use my old router (two boxes instead of one). The breakeven point for lease vs buy for the modem only was something like 10 months. For a router too if you're buying one, it will depend how much you spend on it, but for most entry level routers, you'd likely be ahead after 18 months or less. Edit to add for your new post- I did the connection myself when I bought my own modem and it took just a few minutes once everything is out boxes and ready to go. You connect the wires, call tech support to give them the MAC identity of letters and numbers shown on the bottom of the modem, wait a minute, boot it up and the modem should connect itself. Have your son help you if you want to save the $50, or negotiate some more to get it waived.

Sounds like some registry corruption going on with items missing in control panel and Internet Explorer missing. Lets try and get Internet Explorer back.

Double click My Computer Icon on the desktop or in the start menu. When it opens double click local disk. When that opens look for program files folder double click it. When that opens look for Interner Explorer folder. Double click it. Inside the folder look for The Internet Explorer EXE icon, when found right click it and send it to the desktop or drag it to the desktop. Once there double click it and see if Internet explore opens.

I still have a double check mark on "internet options" and it will not open. I do have IE.

Do you have another working browser on that machine?

What version of Internet Explorer was on the machine? 6, 7 or 8.

It looks like you have a missing file for Internet Explorer. I'd like to reinstall Internet explorer.

Ok if you reinstalled IE 8 is it working now? Can you see Internet Options in the control panel?

I can see internet options but the two check marks are still there and I cannot open it.

Can you look in the Control Panel then click add / Remove. In the add/remove list look for Internet Explorer 8 if you see it uninstall it. Computer should revert back to IE 6 OR IE7 Depending on what was installed previously. Lets try it, and see how that goes. If you don't see IE 8 let us know.

what happens when you go to IE click tools and then options do you have any more access to your internet options going in that way?

I thought of that raven, I'm under the impression that IE is not opening at all.

When I open IE the page is blank. When I tried to un-install I got a warning that several items I have installed will not work properly. Also the un-install hung up. When I am on the IE page I do not see "tools" anywhere. I can open Ebay, bing, and yahoo.

at the top of the IE browser is the menu bar which has tools in it if the menu bar is not showing try right clicking up top on what ever bar is showing and see if you have an option that lists toolbars and put a check in front of menu bar.

you might try this fixit and see if that helps
The menu bar and the toolbar are missing in Internet Explorer on Windows Vista or Windows XP or in Windows Explorer on Windows XP

Which version of IE are you now using?

I tried the above link and it said it could not "fix" I have version 8

Try uninstalling IE8 using the Fixit on the link provided. Just click the Fixit this will or should uninstall IE8.

IE 8 Has been problematic on some XP machines.

Let us know how that goes.
