Nationwide Hacker Attack and a Vent..... (long)

I'm finally back online.

My computer just stopped working all of a sudden and I could not connect to the Internet at all. I did the usual checks.

Is everything plugged in? Check.

Is my phone line in service? I called them to see if there were any outages in the snowstorm. None. Check.

Is the computer itself working properly? Check.

Did extra virus scan. Check.

I checked to see if there was ANY data transfer at all. Check.

My cat sometimes chews on the 12V power adapter for the modem so I checked that for a break in the cord. I did not find a short, but went out an bought a new one anyway. Check.

I checked to see if I could get online with my WEBTV, that I rarely use and, nada. This fact told me it was my MSN ISP that was the problem.

The only thing left to check was my ISP service itself. I called them. First I got someone in India who I could NOT understand and they kept putting me on hold "while they read up on my problem". (Those were even their own words.) My problem was that I could not connect to the Internet and everything on my end was working so it had to be something on their end with their routers or servers or something. They were reading a script to see what they should tell me. I then got transfered to someone else who told me to "disconnect my DSL so that my dial-up would work". He said I can't use both. (Duh?) Neither my DSL OR dial up was working and there was no reason I should remove my DSL line. I use both with no problem. I told him that did not make any sense and the guy HUNG UP ON ME. Well, after all, he wasn't making any sense now was he? There is no reason for me to disconnect my DSL to get my dial-up to work. It's been doing fine for years.

I called back, and the next person refused to connect me to customer service to complain about the guy who hung up on me. AND he refused to give me the CS number so I could call directly. And refused to listed to me when I said I can't connect to the Internet.

Now today, I can connect just fine after not having service for days. I didn't do anything to my computer or do anything to 'fix' things. All of a sudden it was fine again.

I read the news today, and it seems there was a huge nationwide hacker attack on root servers keeping many people from being able to connect to the Internet. Also a lot of people had Internet connection, but were not receiving email because of the attack. WEBTV service, which uses dial-up, was completely down for a while nationwide. I couldn't get my WEBTV/MSNTV service either.

I called my ISP today, to complain about the way I was treated and how I was hung up on. I mentioned that the whole problem with my connection, was probably due to the hacker attack I read about today online in the news. So the problem was not that I didn't know how to operate my computer, as the tech support guy kept implying, but the problem WAS really *on their end* with a malfunctioning of the servers and routers. It's all in the news! The MSN CS rep told me that "she doesn't read the newspapers". What a complete b1tch!

I called to cancel my MSN service and got a recording to only call between 8AM and some other time. I understand that the hacker attack was not their fault, but why treat customers like they are idiots and be so rude on top of it? What really corks me it that I was right all along but they refuse to look into anything that might be their own fault on their end. I checked everything out on my end.

Customer service and tech support seems to be non-exitant these days.

There were a number of news links to this hacker attack story at the top of Google this morning and now they all seem to have dropped off. I don't know why. Maybe they do not want people to panic about the security of the Internet?
