Vista Updates will not install

I was helping a friend of mine this afternoon. She has an e-Machine with Vista OS. She called me several days ago saying that she could not get SP1 to install. I knew that SP1 was rather old and wondered if she was correct. I went to her house and helped do some clean-up maintenance on her computer. Ran cCleaner, Windows Security Essentials, Malwarebytes (which found 3 adware items), updated Spywareblaster, and installed Secunia PSI, which showed several programs out of date. Tried updating IE7 to IE8 using Secunia and it failed. Then went to Windows Updates in All Programs and received information that there were 18 important updates, but it did not identify those updates, just started downloading them when I clicked on download. They took a while but all downloaded and then the UI indicated "Preparing to install". That's as far as things ever went, and after over 5 hours it is still stalled there. What can she do to get these updates to install. I would have preferred to download only 2 or 3 at a time and install, and then continue in this fashion, but there seemed not to be the option to do this. At this point, her only choice is to click "stop installation".

Some advice, please. I do not have Vista on my computers, so it's a little different from what I'm used to.

My friend just called me after having looked at the history of her updates. It seems that Vista SP1 has failed repeatedly since last June. Also Windows Update Agent 7.4.7600.226 has failed over and over. Could the update agent be at the root of her problems?

before you do that have you updated your Vista to the latest service pack? if not do that and try it, that has helped many people who had the earlier versions of vista. have you gone to the manufactures site of the software you are having problems with to see if they provide a vista solution or driver etc which would aid in it working with vista? going backward would be a last option, you mention you have an xp license did it come on a pc? you would be going to a completely different pc and that is not allowed, I would definitely make sure that what you have would be allowed or you may end up not being able to activate it. Definitely make a few good images of the system with Vista on it in case you find you need to go back to Vista that way you will have it exactly as you were before you messed with it. disk imaging software there that is a free imaging program you can use. I am not sure what is built in to Vista for that. Here is a link to a pc magazine article on downgrading How to Downgrade from Vista to XP If you were to go to widows 7 instead which would be going in the right direction there is on certain versions of 7 the option to run xp within 7 so that any programs that run on xp would be able to run within 7 that way as in a virtual machine situation.

Follow the instructions in this link, and you should be able to uninstall it. That being said, I've never reverted to an older version of something as important as a browser so I can't guess what if anything might go wrong. Is IE your only browser? If yes, now might be a good time to check out the available alternatives. Even if you don't want to use another browser, it's a very good idea to have one available just in case something goes wrong with IE. I understand you don't like IE, but a rush to dump it on the same day you installed it is ill-advised. You should give it a fair trial whether you like it or not. When it comes to computers, change is a fact of life and you'll eventually be at a disadvantage if you refuse to cope with the changes. FWIW, I prefer Firefox 4 over all others. MS Office '97-'03 should install just fine on Vista. My Office 2000 version did. So, maybe if you have an old version of office, you could install that, then use the XP upgrade Office disk. If PhotoShop 6 will install and is compatible with Vista, then you could install it and use the PhotoShop CS upgrade disk. I guess you'll just have to try and see what happens. Vista will let you know if anything is not compatible during the install.

I'm only 3 weeks into using Vista so I hate to give too many secrets out until I'm more sure of myself and what security I'm screwing up. But you can make a shortcut, right click and select properties & then follow the security tab to the differenct permissions. Take ownership and change away on the permissions. Eventually after two or three ways I can fairly much stop that you dont have permission to do this popup.... some programs you have to do it to the program folder also so the program can access and write within its own folder. My Toshiba laptop came with Vista and Quickbooks... maybe a trial, I havent tried it... it actually links to a web-addy. Here is a link that might be useful: (quickbooks - toshiba style)

Two things come to mind,

Turn off the firewall if the update is coming directly from MS.

If she is using the on-board Windows update utility fine, but if she is going on-line to the Microsoft update site be sure she is using IE.

I had a problem installing updates when I bought this computer with Vista and one of HP tech's helped me. He had me install 3 or 4 at a time and it worked fine. One update was very large and that particular update can be a problem even if it wasn't so large.

Thanks for the links, Zep. Maime, that is what I wanted to do, only a couple at a time. She called me back last night, and she had gone into her update history and was going to try updating one at a time, going back to the oldest ones first. Haven't talked to her today as it has been a busy day and she is expecting company, so not sure I'll see or talk to her again for several days. In the meantime, I will study the information at the links, and we'll keep working at this. I will post again when there is more information.
