I have to keep downloading Firefox...

I don't understand what's happening. After turning on my computer, I get a message that says it can't find the file I need to open Firefox and I need to download it. Most of my desktop shortcuts are in Firefox, and I'm finding this very frustrating. It has been happening every day for about a week, sometimes twice a day. How do I get my old reliable Firefox back? What happened? I am diffugled. Can anyone help me?

You'll probably have to download and reinstall Firefox to replace the missing file. It'll install to the same folder and overwrite and replace whatever is missing. Who knows what happened.
I don't know what version you have.
I just downloaded Version 1.5.0.10 today.

Some people are using Version 2.0.0.2 and Firefox says all users are strongly encouraged to upgrade to Firefox 2.

Thanks Randy for trying to help. That's what I've been doing, downloading and reinstalling Firefox to replace the missing file, at least once a day for the last week. The trouble is, my computer doesn't seem to keep the file and I have to do it again the next day, and sometimes later on the same day I reinstalled it. It works fine for a little while then I'm back where I started. I have been downloading Firefox 2 each time but it just...won't...stick!

Bookmarks and Scrapbook are different. I can back up Bookmarks easily following the path I gave in my first post. There is a file for Bookmarks inside the next stop after Profiles, which is v20fqq3t.default. I forgot to mention that last one. There is also a folder for Scrapbook inside v20fqq3t.default, but that folder contains a number of files, including "Backup" and several RDF files that appear to be individual backups but are just a meaningless list of figures when I click them, as well as a folder for "Data." "Backup" itself is also full of lines like the following: RDF:Description RDF:about="urn:scrapbook:item20060912103442" NS8:id="20060912103442" NS8:type="" NS8:title="Scappy String Quilt Instructions" NS8:chars="UTF-8" NS8:comment="" NS8:icon="" NS8:source="http://home.pmt.org/~awalter/string.html"/ So I don't see how saving Backup would give me something to use in the event of a crash. Groan. Come to think of it, Roxio appears to insist on individual files rather than folders when I want to burn a disk, so maybe I'll have to export everything to the desktop and then laboriously transfer it to Roxio as a "project" and burn that. What gets me is that previously--maybe a long time ago--there was just one folder that I could transfer to a zip disk and from it open up FF again with all the scrapbook entries. Somewhere along the line that changed. I do find Scrapbook very useful because any Web page saved there is always there, along with its clickable links, even if the original page has been taken down.

I think I may have discovered the problem with Fire-fox. I went in to options and set it to "when Fire-fox starts show my home page". It was on "show my win-dows and tabs from last time". After I made that change back Fire-fox stopped acting up. I don't know how it got changed but, I will see if it continues to work normally. Mikie, When I put my mouse on down-load a little box pops up from social servey panel . org wanting me to do a servey to win-- an-- i--pad etc. When I put my mouse over servey a little box pops up from in box dollars . com. to win-- something. In all the time that I have been on this forum I have never seen anything like that attached to a link. Did you know that those things were there? Since I saw those I will not be clicking on either link. I'm sorry mikie I don't believe that this is your fault and I am wondering what is going on here? Please check this out and let me know what you have found. This is very strange I have misspelled words and put dashes on words on purpose so that they won't show up in blue to be able to click on here, so it isn't just you Mikie that it is doing this too. Everything that is highlighted in blue when I put my mouse over it shows up. Thanks everyone for your feedback, I really appreciate it. thirdfrt!!!

there are some wonderful add-ons for firefox that you will want to add, first is ad block plus with the easylist subscription that will block all the annoying ads you normally see. To do that click to add it to fire fox then when is says you need to restart firefox do that then go to the link for easylist and click on where it says add easylist to ad block plus you can restart firefox again to make sure it took Adblock Plus :: Add-ons for Firefox EasyList there you go that will install ad block plus and your easylist for you. Check out the add-ons page you will find so many that will help you. Like the no squint that was mentioned NoSquint 2.1 this link may be a little outdated but a lot of it will still apply to the new version of firefox Learn Firefox to change your font size and type in firefox click on Tools options that will bring up your settings box. Go through those various tabs to learn what all is there. The first page will have your homepage settings, and where you want thing to go to when you do a download. Under content you can change fonts and sizes etc the privacy tab has some settings you may want to look at and adjust, I always block 3rd party cookies. when you need to clear your cache or cookies etc just click on Tools then clear recent history that brings up the options for exactly what you want cleared and also pay attention to the time frame option it has a drop down menu to select from.

I did google the error msg-unfortunately, I didn't understand what it all meant :) I read the link you posted, and I empty my cache & cookies more then once a day & everytime this happens. Is this to suggest it is a FF issue? I hate to have to use Safari on GW. Thank you.

I think I would defrag & error check the hard drive. If you have a corrupt file, this should fix it as long as you check the fix option when error checking.

What is your operating system? I have a new notebook with Vista Home Basic and it has rejected both Firefox and Thunderbird as not "compatible". These were older versions I had on by back-up HDD, and was before downloading Vista updates, there were 10, and big ones too. I haven't yet tried to reinstall, as I'm having problems with maintaining a functioning dial up connection to the Internet, my only connection at home.

Thank you Randy, Roselvr, and Jerry. I was reading some old stuff on this forum and someone suggested (to someone else) that they thought their problem had to do with their settings. I went in and reset Firefox as the default for my home page and don't seem to be having trouble with it any longer. At least I hope that's the case...tomorrow will tell!

You shouldn't have to have firefox as the home page, I have about 10 pages that open with firefox, which is a cool feature. If it does work for you, there's always the option to add other sites to open when you open firefox.
