Well, I did work on the inside (heated) decor some more ... may not get much done outside ... it is so cold here in Iowa! Here's one more photo I wanted to share of the dining room table...that's my vine tree in the bkgrd & the buffet ... I Downstairs we have an electric fireplace...my hubby built the cabinet for it just a few yrs ago ... here's the top. Everything is thrift shop or flea market bargains EXCEPT for that bark tree ...that came from a very special friend here on the forum!

Nearby on the wall is mounted an old wood mantle ... rough cut & has been in our house for 40 yrs ... the old wood fireplace is gone now ...but the mantle lives on ... this is a sweet Santa I found some yrs back & the pheasants are ceramic projects I made my hubby for Christmas back in the mid 70's ~~

Under the mantle on the floor is this painted snowman scene on a 'foot warmer' ... I bought it & love the lady's work! ... also here under the wreath is a gallon jug of 'bottle caps' & the bottle capper below that ... old goodies: (ohhh...that a Mason jar full of Apache Tears ....rocks when we visited AZ waaay back when!)

& here's Mr. & Mrs. Santa (plastic w/lights) ... old as the hills, too ...our adult kids look for these to be displayed in our home every yr. The ceramic tree is also one of my projects of the mide 70's:

Enough history, yet? Well, probably ... so one more .... as I say goodbye I could walk out this basement door...but it's too dang cold out there! A canvas painting ... I still see this in stores once in awhile now-a-days but this is at least 10 yrs. old. Ok, TFLookin'! Jeanne S.

Ohh brother... I lost some text here ...that last pic is from when we go back upstairs ... my dining room table ... vine tree & buffet in the bkgrd ... a small room but I sure enjoy it! The angel & the crocheted placemat are church garage sale finds a couple summers' ago ... the candle holder I bought new (love those little mercury holders & used a candle ring for some greenery. TFLooking, Holiday-ers! Jeanne S.

DH & I had some runnin' to do Fri. so stopped at HLobby & got a couple more metal trees for gifts (40% off) & the little metal frames (jewelry 50%) ...so I'm tossing around ideas. Got one DD a black metal tree cause she accessorizes w/black in her LR. Found some little resin silvery snowflakes there, too (40% off) ... so here's progress I'm making...think I'm going to use some 'beading' with some of these ornies. Closer up ..the snowflakes are really silver w/black antiquing & the glass frames have 2 glasses that you put pic or whatever in-between...I think this may look good as I'll print doubles. Also this afternoon I got DH to build a window box to go w/paned old window I had painted awhile back...we got it built & attached & I painted it white ...now am accessorizing it for Old World Santa I got earlier this yr after holiday sales at a consignment shop. But I need to dig in totes for pine greenery (ugh!)...here's how it's lookin' so far with greenery I already had nearby: Closeup of Santa: Windowbox: What am I doing!!! Well, this is a good time to have a husband and wife discussion of your decorating philosophy and what's most important and how to compromise, if you aren't in sync. Just having a bigger house doesn't mean you have to now have a decoration for every table and stuff in every room. The magazine spreads kinda get the fever going, but it's a lot of work and storage. If you really love holiday decorating, then go for it, and use various approaches--ronbre and others you can find--to get the most bang for buck and for storage. But what I hear is, I know we will... and expectations of...(? an infant?). For kicks, go to a few estate sales in which whole rooms of the peoples' homes have been taken hostage by Chrismas decorations (though if you have the space and enjoy it, of course you can have a "Christmas room"), and also you can see how tiresome and boring a lot of them are. Also gift decorations require thoughtful keeping or tossing--you know, which ones are truly sentimental favorites and which are not your taste and just not gonna be part of your scene. This goes on forever with all of your household accumulations (toys, egads, can take over, with all the grands), so I suspect you will just live and learn as we all do or did. The main thing you want to try to keep in mind is, am I using and enjoying my things or are they using me and controlling how we live and what else we could do with our time and space? On a more practical note, to your question, here are some ideas: 1--you may be using throw pillows. Nowadays, it's easy to find zipper covers. They cost a bit more to start, but you can then just have "the pillow" and a summer vs. winter covers that store flat and not too much space. NOT necessarily "Christmas" designs, but maybe, light floral vs. dark reds each for half of the year or so. To go even further, you could make them (if you sew) or do custom if it helps you get just the colors and patterns that make a difference. I have found good items at Target and Pottery Barn, though. If you are a real Christmas-decor lover, and particularly if you like traditional Christmas colors, organize your home color scheme with basics that look good with those colors. One easy quick change scheme is background colors that look good with either rosy pinks and lighter greens or Christmas dark reds and greens. I have several rooms with wall colors and fabric colors in pale yellows or neutrals that work this way. On that note--sure and it's grand to have the lilac and peuce Christmas tree color scheme, but traditional colors are lots easier to mix and match over the years. But don't let that stop you if you really want to have a pale blue and silver Christmas. 2) red (or any color) fabric ribbon can be used to decorate existing objects and then removed and rolled up. 3) Do you garden or have room for a number of shrubs? Plan for things you can cut and bring inside, then throw away. I cut hollies, camellias, evergreen ferns, nandina, collect pine cones, lots of things and supplement with small purchases of fresh flowers. 4)If your area gets in nice poinsettias at good prices, just plan to buy several each year and toss. They look great, especially several massed in a large room, festive and then are gone. 5) Table runners --as for entry chest or table--can store on a coat hanger. Again, maybe avoid happy santas, but go with color scheme. Same for table linens and china. Think basic white with a few red pieces, or vice versa--works for 3+ holidays in the year! 6) Focus some of your kitchen or dining acquisitions on things that look great all year but have holiday potential--put a few ornaments in a silver bowl, pine cones in a wooden bowl, or vice versa--going in whatever direction is your decor style. 7) books--you're going to be getting children's Christmas books--new and classics. You probably have some already. These (or some, if you keep some in baby's room) can be placed in a basket (used for something else), with a red bow, on the family room coffee table or by a reading chair, and voila, decoration. 8) Lots of things you can do with family photos that work yearround but can be collected or spiffed up for Christmas decor. 9) though you were asking about "small", big can be better, if fewer. A focal point in a room is better than lots of little things strewn about. But that's why to think of how you can use largish objects you use for other things the rest of the year. When you do store stuff, you might try to organize according to some kind of --well--organization, because you may decorate in waves. Tree stuff, fireplace stuff, x room, or whatever, lets you do a project at a time and not necessarily all each year--don't have to pull everything out to find one thing. As you can see, I'm not big on typical Christmas gew-gaws and try to avoid just what you mentioned, having lots of stuff I only use for one month--'cept of course I have typical ornaments, heirloom nativity set, and DO have some knick-knacks--but really like to focus on the colors that evoke Christmas and coziness, plus nature, with stuff I have, and I find that easier.

Today I pulled the last of the dead mums from the tall planters flanking my front door then wandered the yard cutting armfuls of white pine, arbor vitae, spruce, and winterberry. I shoved the cut branches into the potting soil, sort of like making very big flower arrangements in a foam base. It looks terrific and is FREE. At some point this week I will gather plain dry branches and hit them with some silver and gold spray paint then shove them in the planters too. The trick is the massing -- it has to be full and round. I think it looks great and I have the satisfaction of knowing everything came straight from my own yard. I've done this every year, some times I'll find some great item at the craft shop and shove them in too...glittery feathers are a particular favorite. But even if I don't do that, the planters look good. By the way, when I planted my garden I included things like winterberry and hawthorne because they produce winter berries. Worth considering whether or not you want to "harvest" for arrangements when you're choosing trees and shrubs! In this busy and overcommercialized time there is something so peaceful and extremely satisfying about doing things like this yourself.

Oh dear. I too have one of those ceramic trees, and I have the perfect spot for it. Alas it was made by my ex-SIL and I have such unpleasant feelings and memories of her, I can't put it out without being reminded. It's so odd...I get along with mostly everyone, but she just sets me on edge with such unpleasant feelings. I know the zen in me says to put it out and explore and be with those feelings, but I just can't...I want decorations to bring me joy. We'll be decorating this weekend and will do pretty much the same as every year. My old wreath on the front window needs replacing, which I've ordered but have yet to receive. Hopefully soon. The angel is a counted cross stitch done by my SIL who had the most incredible patience for tiny stitches. She also did incredible beading. Jeanne, the best decorations are all about the history, aren't they?! You have an amazing collection and it's ALL so beautiful!

I love the bark tree and deer!!! I've never seen anything like that and of course it gives me ideas about what to do with the birch bark I harvested last year. lol!

What an interesting basket for your canes and umbrellas... I wish you lived closer because I'd be over with my basket-making supplies and we'd have a blast! :)

Amazing! As usual, it's all about warmth (even though it's freezing outside).

Those bark trees are PERFECT for you. Someone knows you too well.

Now, I must say something about Mr. And Mrs. Santa. Talk about Retro! Although the word "lovely" can be used to describe all the other displays in your home, it doesn't exactly fit the santas. Still, theyre family favorites. I love that. Antique and/or retro are my middle names. Love the plastic santas.

Jeanne, beautiful display on your cabinet. Love your fancy deer with your birch tree. I knew it was you when I seen it. A basket with pinecones, lovely candle and lantern, under that neat picture.

I remember your pheasants you painted for DH. That little chubby santa cracks me up. I thought he had his mouth open when I first looked.

Apache Tears huh? U had me on that one! Love the old bottle caps in the jug and your pinecone wreath. I have a foot warmer messager under my feet right now but it's not as cute as your snowie.

You were once in AZ and didn't find me? LOL. How neat you took home some Apache Tears. When we first moved here and I was learning about the various things native, I fell in love with those little rocks and the beautiful legend behind them. I have few somewhere around here myself, collected back in the 60's.

That chubby Santa cracks me up. He's too cute.

As always, your place just beckons with all the warmth and love your decor shows. I've found it so incredible over the years, how many very special OLD family things you have. And love hearing the stories and history that goes with them. Such treasures!! You always touch my heart with these.

SSSoooo warm and cozy looking! Love everything. I did ceramics back inthe 70's too. Made a pretty large tree it had holes in the end of branches and I had butterflies to put on it. I just moved to OK 6 mon ago and when I got out my Christmas stuff my tree was the only thing that was broken. I was just heart sick because it was going to be the main tree since I gave my big one away!! Oh well I sat down and had a good cry then put on my big girl panties and moved on!! thanks for letting me vent a little I'm ok now!!!
