Well I finally finished the darn mantel in the family-room. Took me long enough to get around to doing the garland this year. I think I am done, or I quit! Not sure which. LOL.

I have two small projects yet to do, and will take pix. A tiny table tree to decorate in "Dad's" room (now my sitting room.) And I want to wrap my dog painting in the entry hall like a big ol' present. Maybe tomorrow, or Friday for sure. Have errand to do tomorrow and that might be my "legs limit" for working. ;o)

Well darn, I just noticed my big white metal sleigh with the gold floral arrangement in it, IN the fireplace, is knocked over on its side. I wonder WHO did that???

Close-up of the Mark Roberts Fairy "Two Turtle Doves" that Jas and Suzie got me one year. (there is small M.R. fairy on my purple wreath I love too.) And those frosted deer came from some mail catalog, they are acrylic.

Hope I haven't put all of you into OVERLOAD with all the photos tonight.

Karen that big twisted ornament tree is so pretty--bet it takes some special wrapping to pack away safely tho. I can't believe you did all this decorating including the garland above the fireplace in spite of your legs giving you so much trouble. You are sure one determined decorator and it all turned out beautiful. Luvs

Thanks, Luvs. I got that ornament 'tree' last year, from a catalog. It was only about $15, and it is lighted. I don't pack it. I put it on the top shelf of the big linen closet with my Santas. ;o)
My legs definitely do not like me going up and down off the step-stool, but sometimes I need to win the battle with them. I give in too much as it is.

My family room (22 * 13 ft) has dark stained wood beams running horizontally across the room. The ceilings are 8 feet. The wood flooring is a honey color. The window and doorway trim will be white. We just removed the panelling and taped and mudded the unfinished drywall and primed it. Issues for me are trying to decide whether or not to paint the beams white, what type of trim to use around the beams and what to do about the two sided fireplace with orange-ish colored brick. I also think that the mantel needs an overhaul as well. Looking for all suggestions.

Thanks for the replies! Here is an update: We stopped into Lexington Furniture in KY, not enough contemporary stuff on the the floor for me, but I sat in a wonderful H&M sofa and totally understand why people are in love with that brand. We spent 1.5 days in NC, visited Boyle's (nice), Black's (yuck), and Furnitureland South. I decided on my room arrangement (2 sofas, one large round chair, large coffee table ottoman, one end table) and then worked hard to find the right pieces. I found fabric selection difficult, but fell in love with some Carter chocolate and blue check fabric and ordered the 'mypod' as a defining piece in the room. The Huntington House sofas (2 identical) will be in a light blue microfiber. I think I'm going to get the large ottoman from Costco http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11173101&whse=BC&topnav=&browse=&s=1 , it isn't exactly what I want, but the color/size/price are right and their customer satisfaction policy can't be beat. I might get the end table there, too....I think I'll take some time with that and find something wonderful at a wonderful price. I'm nervous about ordering with FLS, sure wish they'd take some form of credit. But their current standing with the BBB is good and I really like my salesperson. Their pricing was significantly better than local FL stores and they came down a bit further on the HH sofas when I found a better price at another NC store. My total for the three pieces (2 sofas and mypod) is $5000, delivery and tax included. The HH sofas are among the most comfortable couches I sat on, and the microfiber is a great color. I had a hard time with accent pillows (mogator would have had a stroke if she'd seen my dithering), the salesperson was very patient. (And btw, mogator, you can bash me all day for being slow, incompetent even, when it comes to decorating - but your post impugning the way I care for my family was off base and had a nasty tone. Even if it were 'just a sofa' and not the whole room, this is the FURNITURE forum and dismissing anyone's concerns with 'just a' is silly. But we had a lovely vacation; and wonderful holiday season, and hope the same was true for you) The mypod is going to be everyone's favorite seat, I love the style and comfort and only hope the quality is good enough to last awhile. Thank you so much for your help. TTodd, I know the blue/green/gray can read very cold. The walls are cold now - and they are Shaker Beige - which I did not think would turn out this way. Anyway, the chips are my kitchen and dining room so I may need to head more to the greens than the blues. I have seen so many rooms that I love. The trouble is when I try to recreate them for myself, it doesn't work. I see so many beautiful rooms, then look at mine with a yuck. The door by the recliner does lead outside to the garage. I have my office in part of the living room (never used) at the other end of the house. Palimpsest - yes, I need to move that. Gracie, I think that I do have too many small items in the room. I think I am going to really have to edit. I love all of my stitcheries (although I have taken a few down) - love the antique pieces --- but some things do have to leave. Jan, thank you so much for the visual. I don't know if I can go too green, but I think I can use a more saturated color in there. The furniture is around the perimeter. I did have the sofa pulled away from the wall with the desk against the half wall and a walkway in between - left little room fir when the grandkids come over and play. I think I have too much wood in the room and need to edit some out - then a new sofa, a couple of new chairs. I am also going to try to use the spinet desk as a table between the chairs and see what happens. Thanks so much to all of you for your time.

Thanks for all the input. The beams are not structural; however, they are are mounted behind the drywall. I think we are going to leave them in place because removing them will be even a bigger project then we wanted ( meaning replacing the entire ceiling with insulation and drywall and then patching the wall where the beams were). I think maybe painting them white or grey so they blend in is a great option, but we will take it slowly and to be sure that is what we want because removing paint is a pain. So I think that I will paint the room first, then trim it out in white molding and then see how it looks with the furniture. I also like the idea of painting the fireplace enclosure black. The contrast will be nice. We don't have any extra bricks to do anything extra to the fireplace. I do love the idea of the open shelving along the left wall. There are air vent returns on that wall so I can't have any built-ins. I will probably hold off painting the brick because that is such a permanent change as well. I agree, the mantel needs to come down or become larger by wrapping the fireplace. Thanks for all the comments!

Oh, PM...your mantle/fireplace vignette looks so wonderful! I am still lovin' that 'polar bear' ...he would go good w/my dishes (tee hee)...but I love all the bright & cheery colors that you use w/your nutcrackers, candleholders, cardinals, fairy, & everything! It is so festive for Christmas!

Pretty firebox display, too (even if it's tipped over)! LOL! Your trees & frosted deer looks great! (that frosted deer is like the one on my skating pond).

You'll never put me in overload w/pics...I love lookin' & sharin' & getting Holiday ideas! & I did notice that Kohl's had one of those 'rockin' nutcrackers' the other day while Christmas shopping...it's still there but I LOVE yours & punks! LOL! TFS, Karen...looks great! Jeanne S.

What every one else said and more.. I like the frosted tree with the dear. I am into trees, and that one would be right on my list.

Keeping going is what keeps us going, pain and all. I have the fibro too and IC. A great combo. HA HA HA And with the depression, I just feel no need at times...But, I have Daddy to keep me going, and no one can take care of him like me...LOL

PM - I don't think you could EVER overload us with too many pictures. Your mantle is so pretty - more inspiration for me and my mantle. My mind is all over the place with how to decorate it this weekend. I still want to empty my curio cabinet and get some of my village in it like you have - so many many ideas and so little time left thanks to 'Enablers-R-Us' - TFS .....

Candy, I think all of us with Fibro have learned we just have to keep going as Creek says. Quite a few of us here suffer from this, and I certainly don't feel I do near as much as the others. They amaze me with all they get done.

Jeanne, you definitely would LOVE that polar bear cub in real life. He's made where he looks like carved wood, I'm not real sure that he isn't. My DD found him a couple of years ago at a sale after Christmas and knew I'd love him.
Polar Bears are a favorite of mine, such neat animals! Full of humor and playfulness.

Candy, since you play golf in N.Az occasionally, I'll tell my DD when she has to get rid of my Christmas stuff, you'll come pick it up and make sure its in good homes. Maybe Jane will bring the bus and help you do this. My DD would take all my Nutcrackers to GW in a heartbeat (she really doesn't like them at all. LOL. And if she inherits mine and her MIL's, she's going to need to buy two more houses to put everything in. Her hubby is already really worried about the possibilty of this. LOL)

Karen...your mantel is so impressive!
I love how you did the garland with the ornaments..of course your Nutcrackers are amazing! I can't believe your DD would not want them...but then again, when I see the amazing things people donate to GW...I guess it could happen! lol Great frosted onaments...I'd never think they were acrylic. When I first saw your ornament tree, I was going to ask 'how you did it'...then I read you bought it..
That's another piece that makes a very impressive statement.
I'm laughing over 'who could have knocked down your sleigh'...I don't think we have to guess twice!!
BTW...I love the mirror over your mantel...it's gorgeous.
