options for outside tile corners?

I'm finally about to order tile for my master bathroom. What are my options for outside corners with ceramic subway tile? I've seen bullnose, and I think maybe quarter round wrapping the corner. Are there any other options?

I've got six outside corners and the trim pieces are killing me price-wise! Thanks!

Oh, and pictures would be wonderful if you've got any.

Well, you already know about the bullnose, and that WOULD be the optimum. You could also miter the pieces on either side of the corner, but that tends to leave a sharp edge that's easily chipped, and could easily cut someone if it's not done properly. Another would be to use a wood trim at the corners, but I really don't care at all for that. The last would be a metal bullnose strip from Schluter (same people who make Kerdi) called Shiene. here's a pic of it:

It sounds like I'm probably stuck with the bullnose. I didn't know about the mitering option, but since I'm planning on crackle-glazed ceramic, mitering might not be viable for me. The glaze looks kind of fragile and I suspect it might shatter or flake?

The metal bullnose looks beautiful with that darker tile in your pics! I'm afraid it might be a bit too stark a contrast with my off-white subways.

I just wish the bullnose weren't so expensive.

In the past I've used a radiused subway to turn the corner. It softens the corner due to there being more tile and fewer grout lines. For the base I'll use the inside or outside cove corner pieces to turn corners. Here's an example of a radiused subway for turning a corner: In your case it sounds like you want the outside corner quarter rounds to be black so they will almost frame the wall tiles, In that case, sure, you can simple have a vertical run of black outside corner quarter rounds to turn the corner for you. Your questions: 1. Yes, you can do that. 2. I'd use true cove corner pieces on the cove to turn cove corners. Running quarter rounds to the floor and having the coves butt to each side of the quarter round? I don't see the profiles matching up at all. 3. See answer #2 above. If you run outside corner quarter rounds to the floor, the profile of the outside corner quarter round will not match the profile of the cove. So use cove corners for turning corners with the cove.

No, no premixed thinset is allowed! Use dry powder and mix it yourself. Either buy modified powder, or buy unmodified and modify it with an admix. Mapei, Custom, or Laticrete all make fine product, they are all available in the box stores. I think HD carries Custom and Lowes carries Laticrete and Mapei. Behind the subway you can use gray thinset, it's a little less expensive than white. Behind the glass I always use white thinset so the glass color doesn't get muddled by gray thinset behind it. The amount of "muddle" depends on how translucent the glass is. Marble is often best done with a marble thinset, especially when used in large areas, like a marble floor. You only have trim pieces so it may not be that critical. What is critical is to use white thinset for your marble. Were you to use gray thinset behind marble, marble, being porous, could "wick" the gray through and you could get discoloration with your marble pieces. Even when using white, realize that the marble may discolor a bit after installation. This is usually just moisture being absorbed into the marble, and after it fully cures/dries the marble should return to its original color. If this works for you, just do the subways first with regular gray modified thinset. Let that cure for a day. Then come back and set your decorative marble and glass with a white modified thinset. Did the glass tile come with installation instructions, as far as techniques to install them? There are a few tricks to make things easier. Too thick of a bed of thinset and you can get excessive squeeze out between the pennies. Too little and you can get voids behind the pennies, the more translucent the glass, the worse that would be. Ideally, I would take it to the edge of the corner with some trim or, as homebound said, if it's real stone find someone to grind the edges so that you have a bullnose. If you choose not to go to the edge, I would come out several inches past the edge of the tub, especially if you intend to install a shower door or curtain. Here's a pic of how the builder finished my guest bathroom. Gives you a visual of 'not going to the edge'.

Thank you all so much! I just talked to the tile guy, and he's going to try mitering the corner. If there's any issue, we can buy the 3x3 double bullnose and run vertical in that area (but the tile is special order so we would need to wait for it to arrive before finishing up). I really, really appreciate the advice. I didn't know what to, and it wasn't even on my radar as something I needed to figure out until the tile started going up and looked wrong. :)

I can't take a closer pic right now, but could if you are interested in this. My mosaic tile came (bought separately) with a corner piece made out of ceramic for outside corners. It coordinated with the many colors in my mosaic and the whole line of tile had those trim pieces. You can barely see the line on the angled tub front that carries up into the leaf tile. It is just like the Schluter trim only ceramic.

This is the line of tile if you can locate it and see if the color might go with your subway. There might be other tile lines that have something similar.

in the link, click on trim pieces - they are the 1/2 x 6" corners. Then click on the colors link...the white doesn't look too stark. Just an idea to check if you want.

Here's one with the metal bullnose and light colored tile. The reason I didn't show it first was because you really can't see it (which, I guess is the point) Any place there's an outside corner, inculding the edges of the shower, the edges of the tub deck, and the steps, as well as the two short walls on either side of the tub, there's a metal bullnose strip:

Oh, thanks, Bill, now i get it! I'm a little slow on the uptake sometimes. That looks really nice and sleek with the light tiles. It sounds like I've got a couple more options than I was aware of.

Bill I *SO* wish I knew about that metal bullnose a couple months ago..We had to switch our tile choice because the only trim it came with was a very expensive quarter round...The trim alone was $1000 of our quote for the shower, almost 2x the cost of the field tile total. I sure would have preferred the 10x20" tiles I originally picked vs the 4.5x12" I ended up with.
