FWD with odd message re possible scam

I have gotten a FWD, (no long list of addys) with a lot of old photos.

At the top of the pics there is a small red shield with an exclamation mark. Next to that in small text is "This message may be a scam. Disable scam detection for all messages.)

These are a variety of early pics (nothing off base) made in 1887-1900's, some, or all, by Harris & Ewing. Buildings, street car, people, Indians, etc.

Would you Delete, or Disable, then look at the photos, or look without disabling? I've never gotten anything with a message like that before.

You didn't say as to whether this forward was from someone known or not. So for a moment I have to assume it is not. So I ask, why did you even open it? The threat may already be released. Time and time again members are warned not to open unknown and unsolicited e-mails. Certainly this could be a harmless e-mail, but next time it may not.

I am not fan of forwarded e-mails even from known individuals as it is great source of system infection. I have even created message rules that automatically routes sends all forwards to trash. However,if this e-mail was from a known individual, and if you are a user who "enjoys" forwards the decision is yours. But, so also is the risk.

So I had another call today from a private number. Woman id'd herself and wanted to speak to Annie Deighnaugh. I said who was she with, she named a firm that didn't mean anything to me. I said what does she want and she refused to say anything other than she has personal business with Annie Deighnaugh. I refused to ID who I was and since I wouldn't she would say nothing else. I asked her to give me a general idea what it was about and she would only say "personal business with Annie Deighnaugh". She did say she wasn't trying to sell me anything. So we were at an impasse. I told her if she really knew Annie Deighnaugh, she'd have other ways of contacting her and suggested she use it. She said she would try again later, and I told her not to call again. I suspect it was a call reminding us to fill out a proxy statement. But how ridiculous. I could've been anyone and misrepresented myself as Annie Deighnaugh, so why on earth would that make a difference? How could they possibly trust that I was who I said I was? And if it was about a proxy vote, why couldn't she say that? It's just getting super bizarro!

Martinca; who else in your family has joint pain? What I pasted in below is the 1st sign that this will probably be life long. I'm not sure they will get a good handle on it. Hyper-mobility of the joints is called EDS- Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a heterogeneous group of heritable connective tissue disorders, characterized by articular (joint) hypermobility, skin extensibility and tissue fragility. Back around May; I made a post about Chiari Malformation for a friend. One of the gals here mentioned that she has EDS & little did I know that this would smack me in the face in another 6 weeks after my post. I had no clue what EDS even was; but I'm learning a lot & it's why I haven't been around much the last few months. My daughter has been majorly suffering for 3 years; guess what? Her mystery diagnosis will most likely be EDS. We saw the 1st neuro yesterday; have to find a geneticist probably endocrinologist & rheumatologist. People can live with varying degrees of EDS; some may never know they have it while others are wrongly diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Still others will be fine until like your grand daughter; injure themselves & do not heal right. There is no "test" to confirm EDS; from what I understand it goes off of symptoms which are many. How are her teeth? Please be careful with braces; from what I'm reading they actually weaken teeth- which fits in with my daughter & how her teeth are breaking at the gum. Another issue is she may not be able to be put down for surgeries. My daughter had a molar pulled a few weeks ago; they couldn't get the IV meds to knock her out. Back to her ankle; from what I do understand; the right physical therapist; possibly chiro may be able to work with her to strengthen it. I dislike the word cured because from what I'm reading with others diagnosed; she's going to have to keep working at it but with the correctly trained people. Send me an email; I'll get you set up at a decent facebook group. Inspire also has an EDS board. she is 13. She's had X-rays and MRI . We 've been told she has hyper- mobility of the ankle caused by weak ligaments , and perhaps exacerbated by an injury( sprain). Giving out your number isn't the problem. They use auto-dialers, they just go down the list. I have 2 cell phones and home line listed with Do not call. When I get a number I don't recognize, I don't answer. I can then use the info saved by phone logs, to enter that info on Do Not call.gov and turn them in. I got a call at 5 to 7 in the morning, didn't have my glasses on, so I answered it. Robo call in Spanish. will add that one when I go to Do Not Call. I wait a week, and add several calls a week. I read somewhere, it's better to not answer if you don't recognize the call number, they will not keep calling a number that doesn't answer.

You feel how you feel, whether it's justified or not, that's that. But as you seem to suspect you should have overcome a long ago negative experience and haven't (and I agree with you), you're not doing anyone a favor by passing on such an overly sensitive view as "advice". If that's "just you", fine. Keep it just FOR you too. Or, at least let others know where you stand with something like "I had a bad experience and since then I don't fully rely on security software. I may be overly cautious, but this is what I do....... " OK? (Reason being, many who come here for advice are true novices and may readily assume that offered advice that's alarming and overly cautious about their situation is warranted. Panic spreads too easily)

But even a well-known correspondent can have their address book compromised and email sent our in their name.

I delete and reply to the sender that I don't do forwarded emails. Period. Let them write you directly and cut and paste the info or whatever.

Sorry. I should have said that it is from a friend who often sends me interesting emails, some of which have been forwarded to him. So far there has never been a problem with any of them. I do enjoy hearing humorous or meaningful stories from others, and seeing pictures that I wouldn't see otherwise.

I just thought the message about deleting or disabling was strange.

So is the message related to your own antivirus software? Or ask your friend if that came when he got the email.

Again, please be careful.

Forwards are right up there in risk with free smiley faces and fonts. Plus as SP reported, hijacked address books have been around since Noah and the ark landed.

Sushipup, your question about being related to my antivirus made me think. I looked back and saw that there was not the usual checked by avg message at the end. So I looked at View Source and at the top, just below the senders info, there is this, which I copied

I would write an email to the sender asking them if they did indeed send it and if so to forward it again perhaps.

As you appear to be using Windows Live you could right click on the header and click to show message source but as it is a bunch of photos you would see 5 yards of gibberish.

Your friend is using AVG? You show as having an up to date version of Avast running.

Owbist, as it happened I saw the sender this afternoon at a meeting. He did send it to me. The strange, to me, message, was there when he got it.

I use Thunderbird; he uses Microsoft Windows Live Mail. Yes, I use Avast. I forgot to ask him what he uses. I'm guessing AVG.

I have not sent this on to anyone and now will delete it. I wanted some thoughts and opinions from my friends here since that message was so odd.

CompHelp is my go-to site when I need help, and I appreciate it very much.
