I just opened my Firefox. I am a fairly new user. This forum pointed me in Firefox's direction. I am happy with it. I just opened Firefox....and got a message that said I am running Firefox 3.5.8 and for security reasons, they recommend downloading the latest and greatest version.

I like to stay updated. Has anyone else received this message? Am I that far out of date? I have only been using Firefox about a month. It is normal to have a newer version out already? Or is my timing bad?

I just wanted to make sure before downloading something else.

Firefox up dates pretty often!

Firefox 3.6 is more than 20 percent faster than Firefox 3.5 and includes extensive under the hood work to improve performance for everyday Web tasks.

This is NOT apparently, a popular suggestion, but it is the best and most economical solution to such issues. Your "security" issue is not because of the browser you choose, rather, it's primarily your choice of Operating System that brings about your problems... I have been on line and running Opera, Netscape/Mozilla, Epiphany, K-Meleon, and at times a few others too, all at the very same time for as long as 8 months continuously without ever a shut down, reboot, disconnect or process-kill. And never a virus or a worm or a rootkit or a tracker or a logger or a trojan, never an anything. Get a Linux distribution well suited to your usage and needs, an outgoing firewall, never sign on as "root" and you're pretty much good to go, and go, and go, and go..... Then again, if you're really concerned about "security" and other such subjects, you can get OpenBSD and by default be about as secure as is currently known to be humanly possible.... I have been running IE7 (I should say it's running in the background of my sbc yahoo browser, I use both) for about a month now. One thing I noticed when I switched from IE6 to IE7 was an increase in pop ups, even though I have two different popup blockers installed. Three nights ago, I received an update from microsoft, I believe it has to do with melicious softwares detection. Anyway, not one popup has gotten through since the update, so I am hoping that solved the problem. It was generally about one or two popups every time I was on the 'net (generally for about a half hour to an hour's time). I was about ready to roll it back to ie6, but now I think I will keep it and see how it goes. I do like a number of the new features, especially the tabbed browsing. --J

Uninstalling Firefox may leave the user profile data intact for a reinstall. Suggest uninstalling again and manually deleting all the profile data. Reinstall, which will then create a new user profile. Backup your bookmarks before uninstalling and deleting the profile, so you can import them into the new profile. There's a backup function (and import function) under Bookmarks / Show All Bookmarks. I had a situation recently in which Firefox stopped working with my online banking billpay service. The page would load with no errors but blank. IE worked OK but I refuse to use IE. Just my local bank. Three credit card accounts elsewhere, brokerage account, and other secure sites worked OK. Local bank worked OK with the Firefox Default user, which is not the profile I use for myself. I keep Default bare with no add-ons or bookmarks saved. Apparently something went awry in my user profile. I created a new profile (without reinstalling), copied bookmarks to it from my previous profile, reinstalled my add-ons, and that solved the problem.

it is one of the reasons I love firefox so much they are so on top of it when it comes to sending out a fix as soon as possible when they find out there is a problem they do not wait they get on it and get er done.

If FF has been updated to 3.6, should that be ok...don't have to do anything? I did a Secunia scan about 10 days ago. Appreciate the advice.

I don't understand why anyone would run those versions anyway.

OK, I downloaded firefox v 3.6 a little while ago, and it has really messed up my computer. The first thing I noticed is that there are 4 add ons that are not compatible with 3.6, one of which is the IE tab, which I really want. I have tried to find somewhere to download my old version from, but everything brings up the newest version. could someone point me in the right direction? I had just downloaded v 3.5.8.
In the meantime I will read what Zep had posted above.

it usually takes the writers of the addons a couple of days to get their addons compatible with the new version so just keep hitting the check for updates for your addons and they will update them quickly especially the really well known ones, that is very common when a new version comes out.

If you want to go back to an older version you can go here to file hippo and look over to the right there is a list with all the older versions just select the one you want from that download list.

Thank you Ravencajun. I knew that I had seen that before, but I couldn't find it. I'll wait awhile before going back to v 3.6, because it changed my computer in other ways too.
