Ignorant - Netbook...picture transfer

I can go to Meijers photo dept and have old photos scanned and put on CD and put them on my ancient eMAC via CD. But then how can I get them to my Netbook? Do I need a "thumb drive" (is that the same as a flash drive?) I don't have tons of pictures but I use mostly the netbook now rather than sit at the MAC and that MAC isn't going to last forever. Right now I guess I'll just email myself a few.

Will Meijers transfer them directly to USB flash drive, or thumb drive (same thing)? They might. Tell them you will be installing the photos on a windows machine. Not sure if a file adjustment would be made. File types for Mac are different for windows I don't know what compatibility issues are but keep it in mind.

yes you can use a usb thumb drive or you can upload them to an online storage facility then move them from there to the other netbook if you want them there. Or if you have a stand alone cd/dvd usb unit you can use that.

some netbooks have a slot for a memory card also if you have the pictures on a memory card in your camera you can use that to move them and you can also use a memory card just like you would a usb drive, insert it in your pc (or a card reader that is plugged into the usb port) move the pictures to it then insert the memory card into your netbook memory card slot and upload them off of the card.

I have a net book also and have never missed the cd/dvd drive at all. I much prefer to use the other options mentioned.

There are several things that are in question,about mosaic virus in Hippeastrum.We all need to know the answers to these questions,in order to successfully grow these wonderful bulbs. Dr Alan Meerow is one of the worlds foremost experts on amaryllids. I sent an E-mail to his one time student, Kevin Preuss,yesterday,concerning this subject.Kevin owns Amaryllis-plus.com ,and is very knowledgeable about the plants he sells. He specializes in species,but has some hybrids also. I asked Kevin if Papilio can be infected and if so, does it transfer the disease to other bulbs,via vectors,even though it has no symptoms? There are other questions people on this forum and I have asked about mosaic in Hippeastrum. We need to ask the people who might know and if they don't know,then we need to push for research on this. I have lost many years of plant breeding this year,having to throw away mosaic infected bulbs,almost half of my over 1000 bulbs, in fact,so far. Del

If you do not have too many files you could save them as RTF (Rich Text Format) and move them over. RTF files are readable by just about all word processors. Try one first to be sure.

You are in a difficult situation, and one that will not be easily remedied at this point. A pattern has developed for the past 4 years with this young man, and perhaps much longer. Since it was not addressed or resolved initially, it will always be a sore point in your home. You could yell, threaten, or issue the 10 commandments of household behavior, but it's not likely to do any good. This young man has your number and his step-dad's as well. He has gotten away with this for far too long, and he never faced any consequences for it. The biggest problem are both bio-parents. They are the enablers in this scenario, and one or both of them will continue to enable this young man. He is not a "boy" anymore. He is a young man headed for trouble because of his disrespectful attitude towards authority figures. He will be learning some very hard lessons in life. You need to talk to your husband privately about not letting this young man live with you. If you don't, his rude behavior will be a daily ritual at your house for the next four years or longer. Are you prepared for that? There are thirteen year old boys at my church who reach out and say hello at my church to fellow parishoners. They even make an effort at conversation. So, I don't buy the "it's just normal teenage behavior" cop-out argument for all inconsiderate actions by 13-19 year olds. The young man you have described is way too immature to go to college. He may even have a severe personality disorder. So, going to college right now would be a waste of everyone's time and money. He needs to grow up and the best way for him to do this is for him to get and hold a job. He needs to do this for a year, before thinking about college. Otherwise, he will just fail his first semester and never go back. Then he will be reluctant to try anything - including work. The dad needs to handle this situation himself. He should tell the young man that he needs to grow up, be respectful of others, and work and save. The dad needs to agree that the son should not live with you. He will either have to move in with friends and pay his own way, or continue to live with his mom and pay her rent. Your husband cannot dump this problem on you to try and fix. If he does, you both will need counseling. Stand firm. You need to come first now after four years of this nightmare.

It's all up to what you want vs. cost/effort. If it was me, I'd just run a white Ethernet cable around the periphery of the room to the location where you need it (unless your carpeting is dark in which case you can use black Ethernet cable). The cable won't be noticeable unless you look for it and doesn't need to be fastened down. If you're a perfectionist, and can't tolerate such a cable lying on the floor, then you could do the extra work of hiding the cable behind the baseboard moding. First carefully pry off your baseboard molding. Then notch out a channel for the Ethernet cable at the bottom of the drywall. A box cutter will work for this and it doesn't have to be neat. Lay the cable in the channel, securing at intervals with masking tape so it doesn't fall out before you get the baseboard molding reattached. If you want to go whole hog, you can also fish the ends of the cable inside the wall up to your existing Ethernet outlet box and to a new outlet box. Again, it's extra work but if a professional appearance matters to you, go for it. Wireless is a secure option, but probably not worth it unless you have additional sites in your home where you need network access. I find it nice to be able to use a laptop online anywhere in our house. Keep in mind that wireless is not quite as fast as wired if you have large data files to transfer.

Meijers only transfers to CD - I discussed that at length with the photoshop people.

Hm...no stand alone anything.
On one side
THere is a little card in a slot but it came that way and Im assuming that has something to do with the operating system or something.
There is a female pin thing with a monitor symbol
and two....2.0 USB? I'm not sure
On the other side
headphone, microphone, what looks like a phone/cable input jack and maybe another 2.0 USB thing?

So....what kind of thumb drive do I buy?

The most difficult would be picking out the color or shape there all the same, except for 1 thing they all hold different amounts of data. Get one that holds a good bit of data there not expensive and easy to use. It will plug into the 2.0 USB slot you mentioned. Easy peasy japaneasy!

I buy them all the time at big lots they have the 4gig ones for $12 you can get them at walmart or any electronics store.
The little slot you are mentioning is probably the memory card reader slot, since you have not mentioned what kind your netbook is we just have to guess.

as to what they look like here is a search for them on buy.com they come in various capacities and brands. I have mostly kingston.

You can buy a portable dvd/cd drive that plugs into your Netbook via USB if you think you may be using photo CD's often. This would also burn disks if you even wanted that for backup purposes.

If you use the USB thumb drive option, and the Mac doesn't transfer the compatible file - you could go to your local library and transfer pictures from CD to thumb drive on one of their machines.
