My 'Woodsy' Holiday Decor has begun!

After celebrating Tksgvg w/kids/gr'kids Thurs/Fri. it was time to start luggin' the 'totes' from the garage! Mostly DH carries them (the heavy ones, anyway). So, for a couple days I've been emptying & filling back up totes! LOL! Love it!

Progress is being made ...you know me as Jeannespines...so, you can usually find pine & woodsy decor in my home. So here's the porch woodland decor on this old dresser that we bought at DH's parents' estate sale from their cabin in MN.:

Woodland Santa was a HL bargain for last yr ... snowshoe ornie leanin' against the lamp trunk ... lighted log cabin I found in MN some yrs ago on vac ...some pinecone candles & a furry clad snowman sitting in the tree (a gift):

On Sat. I had moved this dresser & tried my 'window box' Old World Santa that is new this yr (greenery not added in pic yet) ...DH & I made it ...but it wasn't working to my liking so moved it back to the corner for the Woodland vignette ...so I'm still looking for a good spot for it! I worked so hard I fogged up the windows! LOL! (not!)

While on the porch I got the 'Woodsy' tree put up...this tree is over 10 yrs old now & still looks GREAT! Added the galvanized tub (ice skating rink)...here's close-up view:

I fixed up this fav basket of mine (that you've seen before for t'scape centerpc) & added it to my DH's new fireplace cabinet he built ... looks good, I think!

Jeanne, as always, love all your woodsy decor. The deer look wonderful with your basket and oil lamp. The little cabin, tree, ice skating rink, candle and fireplace lit up, gives a nice warm feeling.

I really like the window box sitting on the dresser. It looks good with your tree beside it. Not sure why you don't care for it there. I'm sure you'll come up with something even better knowing you.

I can relate to being tired. I'm all in tonight after running for 5 days non stop. I did get some outside decorating done. It's 53 here with lots of wind but a welcoming change.

Jeanne, I always look forward to seeing your woodsy Christmas decor. I love it all. Every year! The skating rink is so delightful. And I think your "skinny old tree" is wonderful. (If I had a full size tree again, I'd want one like that. But alas, none in many years, since the kids left home and only the cats left to enjoy a big tree. You know Mr O doesn't notice such things)

Punk....53 and wind, and you STILL managed to do outside decorating?? Holy purple cow! Guess you Montana girls are use to that sort of weather tho. LOL.

It's a big frenzy. But a fun one! :) Ideally, everyone gets a number. That serves two (at least) purposes. One, it helps with knowing how many people we had attend. It's also how door prizes are drawn. Everyone donates one plant to the prize table (if you can) and numbers are drawn periodically. They can also be used to help keep track of who has something you want. Since I do less swapping and more walking, talking and picture taking, I'm not the best one to spell out proper swap ettequitte. (Or even spell it.) But generally speaking, swaps don't take place until the "swap" is officially opened. (Other than those that were pre-arranged before they day of.) Everyone tries to be there and be set up well before start time just so you have time to cruise the tables in order to decide where you want to go first. Just a heads up... Oh, and there are usually several people handy to help you unload since parking is a little ways away from our preferred swap location. (Trust me, it's worth it.) Never, EVER, just pick up something and walk away with it. (I know, that should be obvious, but it has happened.) If there is something at a table you'd like to inquire about, use that number to find the person who's table it's on. They may be right there or they may be looking at your stuff! But always make sure you have an arrangement with someone before taking anything. Generally speaking people will have items behind or underneath thier table/space which they have already traded for. Those are off limits. Items on or in front of a person's table/space are considered there for trade and you should feel free to inquire about them. Most people are willing to trade for just about anything, but don't be offended if they don't want anything you have. Just move on and do the best you can. Who knows, someone else might have the same thing and just be dying to have what you brought. If you don't have a lot to trade, come on anyway. Bring what you have and be patient and you will likely come away with more than you brought. (A lot of us old timers see it as a contest to get rid of more than we take home.) Lunch is a potluck affair with some of the best food you can imagine. And some I never had! Just bring enough for your group and share with everyone. There is usally a speaker after lunch while everyone digests. (Or Naps...) That's it in a nutshell.

I haven't read the replies yet, but will after I post my thoughts. You all know I don't decorate for Fall, including Thanksgiving. It's because I find those colors to be extremely ugly and boring ONLY inside the house. Outside they're stunning! We love Thanksgiving, but TG is the official first day of the holiday season in my family. I used to wait until Dec. 15th to put up my tree, now it's sometimes after TG. Everything turns brown right now and is so dull, why carry it into the house? Right now I've put up my winter tablecloths. They will match with Christmas decorating but can also hold their own as a winter decor. It's a sneaky way to begin. lol. Christmas is the long holiday, if we're lucky, the joy of Christmas stays with us until New Years. SO MUCH THOUGHT goes into decorating, if I waited until December to decide what I want to do this year I'd be frazzled half the month and not enjoy myself. This year's decorating won't be as over the top as last year, but I still want it cheerful and elegant at the same time. I already have my Christmas Card station set up! I wish others than myself sent out old-fashioned cards instead of just pictures, but that's another topic! lol

I love your decorations, being in the south we don't see many ice skates but I like the idea. My favorite decorations are the things we have saved over the years - even the old aluminum tree - I still do not understand why my mother bought that thing when you couldn't put lights on it. For some strange reason, I still like it, maybe for the memories it brings back.

I think that's so beautiful you want to make these memories for your child! Knowing my own decorating and reading the above responses I see a common thread of choosing which holidays and how to decorate coming about organically. Like your child will be making decorations in preschool, and now that you've decided you want to do this your eye will start noticing others' (inc. shops') decorations and what appeals to you. This forum has also really helped me with SUPER ideas about decorating. Like a few years ago kswl had that incredible slideshow of her home at xmas and I fell so hard head over heels ... it totally inspired my nutcrackers (for xmas). And another generous participant posted her beautiful gumdrop tree (again for xmas) which got me going in that candy direction, and I'll tell you I RAN with it! I don't even like (to eat) candy yet I've found it the most magical, perfect way of decorating the trees. Thank you GW! So we're multiethnic (I'm 1/2 Jewish, 1/2 WASP and my partner is 100% Shinto Buddhist Japanese) and we have fun with it. I love love love our Hanukkah waterglobe collection and growing collection of dreidels. I love all the koinobori (carp windsocks) we have for Children's Day (May 5th). I find that for many holidays my decorating effort extends to color-appropriate candies in the living room -- like red & silver kisses for Valentine's, pastel pastilles for Easter. I am NOT a jingoist but I do love red white & blue bunting on the 4th ... on other people's houses. I'm not that motivated, I guess, although this year we did line our front walk with stars and stripes pinwheels. That was fun and made me really part of our sweet little town's festivities. We have Japanese lanterns up in the backyard so they're already handy for Obondori (another Japanese celebration honoring your ancestors), and then because I am a wannabe Mexican I have tons of fun with Halloween and my calaveras / catrinas. My 6 y.o. is *delighted* with the enormous fuzzy tarantula we affix to the outside of his window each year -- the kids love it. This year I went bananas at Target and purchased a string of jack o lantern lights and put them in a tree, and then a cobweb made of orange lights which we plastered on the living room window. I'm not sure who loved all this new stuff more: my 6 y.o. or me. (me)

Karen, Yep, I just pulled up my Big Girl Pants and away I went!LOL I was so thankful the snow and cold has gone that I enjoyed being out most of the day.

Didn't go all out like we have some years but something for DGD to enjoy when she comes down. We store all of it upstairs in the shed. I got a good workout by the time I brought it all down & out, staked it and hooked up timers.

I'm thinking I should look for a skinny tree this year when they go on sale after Christmas. It would be nice if I could lift it and bring it to the house myself.

Jeanne, I love it all! You really have the knack for putting the right things together!!
I Love woodsy tree and the skating rink is delightful.
The deer and your favorite basket are perfect on the fireplace surround that your DH built. He is so talented!
My living room is full of totes. I hope to finish trimming my tree today so I can put them away.

Love your woodsy scenes. Do you keep some of it up past Christmas since it's not so Christmas specific? If so, it's a nice way to extend the season and get more time out of all the work it takes!

Yes, rafor, I do try to decorate for 'Winter' ... I keep it up til early March usually (when I am craving for Spring! I love 'snowmen & snowladies' & deer. The Nativity & Santa's I put away after the New Year.

punk...the window box I've tried about everywhere in my house! I am sad that it did not fit on treadle sewing machine in the LR ...but it is 30" tall (22 wide)...so then I couldn't hang up that big old window w/B&W old Christmas family pics. I've worked at that window box this past yr buying the Old World Santa after sales...finding that slim tree this Fall & a brass rocking horse toy for in the box & painted over some ornies..so will have to keep looking for the perfect spot. It was too crowded by the tree & just didn't jive, I guess. ;-)

nana...'tote' heaven, isn't it! I hate the mess of those plastic bins sitting around! ;-) & PM, I don't have a 'Jazz' living w/me...tee hee! I know you have a new puppy, too! Jeanne S.

I love this old window which was rescued from my sis' old farmhouse some yrs back before it was tore down. I keep it up all Winter, too. Jeanne S.

Jeanne - love the woodsy theme and especially the skating scene in the tub - what fun. Really like the enclosure your husband did for the fireplace. That is the next thing my hubby's 'todo' list - I want a mantle so bad to decorate. We don't have a fireplace but he is going the make me a faux fireplace and I will just put candles or a basket full of greenery where the fire would be. I get so inspired from all of you - so many great ideas TFS .....

Let's see, what can I say other than I love it all!! LOVE the little log cabin especially and the window photo hanging is such a great idea. All of your woodsy decorations are just so inviting......

Not enough time to go into detail, but I am always drawn to Jeanne's decor - so warm and cozy, despite all the frolicking by those snowmen and snow ladies.

Porch is done...I'm enjoying it (as it's the only thing done at the moment) ...but everytime I walk by the sliding doors I smile! & the lights on at night makes it feel festive! Don't ya love Christmas time!

That Woodland Santa & Log Cabin vignette is fabulous.
I love the look of it...also your lovely '10 yr old' woodsy tree lol...and of course the cute Ice Skating Rink...which is always fun to see.
You did a beautiful decorating job on 'DH's' fireplace..oil lamp looks perfect up there...everything looks so warm and inviting.
