HP Pavilion 4535 CD Burner?

This is another question concerning my Aunt's computer (who lives way 'up north' in another state), the HP Pavilion 4535. Would it be possible to add a burner or install a CD burner in her computer or should she purchase an external burner?

She can have an internal added - she probably wold want to max out her ram which shows as 64 mb default with 256mb max. Probably pretty cheap to do while apart at the shop.

But its gonna burn slow ... 400 Mhz Cel with 256 mb mem isnt going to zip right thru the burn. I remeber 60 minute burns ... She'll probably want to not surf or use the computer at all while it burns... or it may screw up the burn.

Personally I love HP products especially the Pavilions I have a few of them and have had excellent luck, I do however prefer the AMD processors over the Intel, I have had both in HP Pavilions and from now on will only get AMD. The first thing you need to decide is if you want a pc with Windows XP or are you ready to risk trying Vista? that will definitely affect where to look because not as many XP computers are available now. I would not go with less than 1Gig RAM and really preferably it should be 2 or 3 Gig especially if you are going with Vista you will need that to run it well. A good size hard drive anywhere from 150 gig up. HP is my preferred brand of the big names, but I also like checking out the local shops that do custom builds, You can get exactly what you want with out a bunch of junk added on and many times they are less expensive plus you have someone to turn to locally if you have problems. IBM/lenovo also makes good product. My flatpanel monitor is an Acer which I love, it was very reasonable in price and has exceeded my expectations. The one thing to consider on a monitor is the type of connection you will need to connect to your pc, if possible you want one that has all connection types because that will give you more flexibility. However mine only has analog and it has been just fine for my needs. ANd of course if it is just your hard drive that has died I would get a new hard drive they are fairly cheap and put in there and keep that old pc as a spare or to use as a back up for file storage. Or load one of the free linux operating systems on it and give linux a try, I love it and use it daily.

I have the same DVD/CD burner on my HP computer and I did have problems burning DVD's after I uninstalled Norton and put Avant on my computer. I found out that I needed to shut down Avant when I burned DVD's or else it just didn't work right and kept running forever and then gave me a message that there was problems and I needed to try again. I think Avant's scanning was interferring with Sonic. Once I turned off Avant Sonic worked fine.

Thanks for your imput Owbist and Ravencajun. I've done some more searching and finding. Appears that the LG internal DVD/CD I installed is a bit problematic. And yes, it does, sometimes anyway, recognize blank DVD. Last evening I was playing with it and inserted a blank DVD-R. It recognized it. Then I started a process to move a folder of 2+ Gb of photographs to it. At the point where it said click here to copy, I exited the process. Then the drive did not recognize the blank DVD. So, I put the DVD in my external burner, which is also an LG, and it recognized it. Rather than continue to troubleshoot and reseach ad infinitum, I'm just going to replace the drive. To use the wireless service, you need a wireless b/g card; most of the new laptops have this built in. Rather than purchasing MS Office, why not download free Open Office and give it a try? Once you are on cable, the download should not be too much. OO documents are compatible with Office, from what others here say. Several others here use OO and can answer any questions you might have. By all means get 2GB of memory. The size of the hard drive is up to you, but it sounds as if you don't need a huge one, given the history of your desktop. You might also consider later purchasing an external hard drive just for storage of pictures, music, and such. These are not at all costly these days. Look for plenty of USB ports and built-in memory card reader to help in transferring your pictures to the hard drive from your camera. A combo CD/DVD burner is almost a given, as that is pretty standard now. The 15.4" wide screen is not at all bad, but the 17" is nice if you can find it in your price range. Check around and watch the sale circulars. There are some great buys to be found.

One has to think about cost effectiveness. Upgrades will probably cost in the neighbourhood of a couple hundred bucks and still not have the speed nor power for anything. She could get a low entry tower for $350-400

With Vista half-baked and the phase out of XP looming on the horizon, would a 400.00 tower be worth it?

The hard drive and Ram, and probably the burner...the purchase price will come in around a hundred...but you guys are right about the labor and are they going to insist on using their stuff?

I dunno. I don't know which way to go.

The model number would indicate that her comp is older than my Win 98 HP. I would not put money into adding a burner or even a HDD to one that old. If she can fine a tower with XP in the price range Gene suggested, that's the way I'd go. She would be ecstatic with a faster processor and more memory and a larger HDD. BTW, MS is supporting XP beyond the 2009 date first announced, at least with security updates.

That's two years...this is a tough decision. She doesn't want to give up her computer.
Personally, I can't recommend any of the 400.00 t0 450.00 towers that I looked at. The users of them couldn't recommend them either. I think CNET gave one budget model a rating of 7.6, while the many users collectively averaged their rating at 3.0.

I did find a Vista premium HP tower for 564.00 and she's a HP fan. I dunno. Everybody's watching budgets and I don't like saddling her with an inferior product nor one that will need to be replaced within two years. Computers are investments. I sent her the HP tower link...haven't heard back. Telling her to throw away 400.00 isn't any easier than telling her to throw away 200.00. She's like me, a computer junky...which I think is cool but not easy in these times.
