how about a bench on the left wall outside of the shower. where she might sit to put lotion on or just rest. or it could run in front of the shower... the wall on the left for a towel bar?

a single handle faucet is easier for those of us with painful hands.

shower set up looks good. trench drain is good idea also.

I'd slide the shower controls closer to the door so they can easily be reached from outside the shower. The way they're drawn they're centered, so 2 ft in which is hard to reach. Also make sure they're at a height that can be reached from a seated position.

Consider placing one of the niches to the side of the bench as looking behind and reaching behind while seated on the bench can be hard with limited mobility.

Make the door opening 34". That's the minimum ADA compliant width.

thanks, suero, I've been trying to find that info, which seems to be more difficult to find that it should be. I'm worried that a 34" glass door will be difficult to manage and keep level to maintain the vapor-tight seal, but will do what we need! I'm planning to mount directly to the wall on the right so that it can be anchored as solidly as possible with at least 3 (4?) hinges.

I have a 34" wide door. The door is 3/8" glass, mounted to 1/2" glass with two hinges. The 1/2" glass is mounted to studs in the wall with two fasteners and to the floor with one fastener. The fixed glass has a silicone seal. There is a silicone sweep on the bottom of the door and a silicone strip on the sides of the door.

The door may be difficult for a feeble person to manage, but I think that would be true of any glass door. I have had no problems with maintaining a seal, and it's been nearly four years.

You really shouldn't have the toilet be the first thing you see when you enter. I'd put the vanity where the toilet is and put the toilet by the shower with some storage. Put the toilet on the west wall rather than the south wall so that is basically faces the door.

that's a good idea houseful! makes more sense to do that and will look better.

Re: toilet placement, I had considered that it's less than ideal to have the toilet the first thing in view, but it's a priority for my mom to have a straight shot to the toilet. However, since much of the foundation/joist/framing is now being rebuilt from scratch due to termite damage and some structural work, I will ask the GC about moving the entry door to the left a few feet, so that it would be a shorter walk to toilet in left corner (must be next to wall for grab bar). Then the tall storage unit would go to the right of the entry. I just need to re-check the plan relative to the adjacent rooms (must avoid HVAC, e.g.), but by golly, I think this could work! I am in the process of remodeling a bathroom for my mom too, so I get the toilet placement issue. However, it's not really that much farther and I think our mom's would love to see a beautiful vanity upon entering. That's what I did for mine.
