excess flow gas valve and bluestar range

Hi,

I'm not sure if this should go in the Appliance forum or in the Plumbing forum...

I am interested in installing an excess flow gas valve for my yet-to-arrive 30" BlueStar range from Costco. Has anyone installed one? Which model did you choose?

The concept seems like a good idea. If there is excess flow above x BTU, it will restrict flow. Depending on the model, it might require a minimum BTU to operate.

I did a search on GW, but didn't get any good hits.

I put in such a valve on my Bluestar. All I remember is that it was brass and had a rating on it. I live in the bay area and thought it would be a good idea -

It's sort of redundant now because I put in a large Earthquake valve on the main gas line into the co-op apartment building we live in.

I got BrassCraft CSSC22E-36 P for my Culinarian.

It is 5/8" OD, 36" length for Pro-Grade Range or Furnace.

Rated for appliances between 75K-125k btu.

Remember to include the oven btu's.

(15x3)+ 10 + 30 = 85

The kit won't be expensive. Bluestar includes both LP and natural gas orifices for their RCS ranges they sell in Canada. In past discussions here on GW, we have had people mention that Bluestar sent them the conversion kit for free when they called them. Not saying they will do that for you, but by all means call the company and ask what a conversion kit would run. It will involve replacing all of the burner orifices, the number and specs of which will depend upon your model, and possibly some valve/shutter adjustments. Have the job done by a qualified gas-fitter or plumber if you are not certain of your skills. You should not lose any performance from the range. LP combustion provides move heat per unit volume than NG. This difference is handled by installing much larger orifices in the Natural Gas conversion kit. You end up with much the same flame at the burner. Once it is all up and running you should not note any degradation in performance.

Not to minimize, but I think the concerns over carbon monoxide relative to what the hood is doing should be pretty small. The main thing that affects CO production is how the fuel is burning. If there's enough air, as indicated by a solid blue flame, you shouldn't have to worry. And that's set by the air shutters at the various burners. For the hood to affect the amount of air for combustion, it would have to reduce the amount of air that can get into the shutters to mix with the fuel. That isn't going to happen since the air pressure at the burner is always going to be essentially the same as at the air shutter for that burner. For there not to be enough O2 for the fuel (i.e. enough air, but O2 concentration reduced), there's also not going to be enough O2 for you as the cook. That hints at larger problems not related to the range. I'm not saying there aren't houses where makeup air is needed. It's not just to prevent negatively pressurizing the house, it also lets you control where that air is coming from, as opposed to via infiltration (or an open door/window). I vote to get as big a hood as you can- we have a 42" wide by 27" deep VAH over our 36" BS RNB. We also don't necessarily turn it on when cooking unless we need to. Still here despite all that combusted natural gas (i.e. 2H2O + CO2) we've let into the house. Yes, we have a CO monitor, as should everyone.

CFM: correct. It would be a very porous house (or Pago Pago traditional design) to pass 600-ish actual CFM without significant negative pressure resulting. How significant is difficult to say without more data. If the furnace and/or hot water heater are gas fired, then 0.03 inches of water column is the most negative you should allow the house to get. Else a back-draft condition can pull carbon monoxide into the house. If these have their own MUA, or are somehow isolated from the house air, the kitchen ventilation MUA can be somewhat more coarsely controlled. In the house leakage category, older and leakier means a lot older and leakier than a house built to '90s specs. Think 19th century farm house. The zero static pressure performance of the MUA blower, if needed, is the same as the kitchen hood blower unless significant house leakage can be proven. h) I would want six inches to a foot of space under the baffles for a 30-inch hood if I were doing cooking tasks that caused large sudden releases of effluent into the plume. I don't think this is well quantified in the literature. The recommended 90 CFM/sq. ft. actual is intended to get the baffle gap velocity at the top end of reported plume velocity; so long as the entire plume is captured, one would expect full containment. Commercial hoods often have a lot less baffle area than entry aperture area, so they need a capture volume that is proportionately larger. In a residential hood design such as Wolf's Pro series, the baffles pretty much cover the entire opening, and I think the capture volume can be more modest as a result. What I meant by significant cost is that the MUA cost is commensurate with the hood system cost. Further, with an existing house, integrating the MUA can be a more trying experience than dealing with getting the hood exhaust out of the house. Dominant sound is usually blade tip turbulence from the hood blower (and MUA blower when present). Silencers can be used to attenuate this, but require sufficient duct length and diameter space to be installed. Hence, the blower is not in the hood in a muffled configuration. [Meaning: a blower in the hood can't be muffled.]

Around here, plumbers seem to prefer putting the gas line into a recessed box. Or alternatively, if that isn't a good option, then they'll put the gas valve into the floor. That also makes it easier to reach the shut off valve in case of emergencies. Otherwise, I sometimes see a secondary shut off valve in an adjacent cabinet. As others have said, none of these locations guarantee that the gas line fits behind the range. Every range is a little different, and some of the larger ranges do use almost all of the available space in the back. So, it is not unusual that you'd have to move the gas pipe a little bit. A good general contractor plans for that possibility -- after all, you never know if a few years from now, the next home owner doesn't want to switch out the range.

deeageaux: I noticed yours is rated at 75K-125k btu. The spec sheet says the min flow capacity is 75k BTU.

Does it your stove still work when you have just one burner turned on? (I can't get my head around the min 75k BTU number and the words min flow capacity.)

Thanks for the reminder about the oven BTUs. Would there ever be a time when you have the oven and the broiler on at the same time? It seemed unlikely. I couldn't find an example.

I got the brass craft kit in 1/2 inch from Lowe's to hook up my 5 burner Frigidaire gas range with convection oven. it works fine with mine. don't matter if I have one burner on or the oven and several burners at once.

Please forgive my lack of knowledge in this area. Can someone explain WHY and IF an excess flow valve is needed? I have had gas ranges for many years and unless the installer automatically installed an excess flow gas valve, I assume I do not have one. As I will be replacing a GE range with a BS or CC (as soon as I can decide which), I would like to know if this is necessary. Is this an essential safety measure with open burners? I do understand its purpose having read the link. However, in emergency situations isn't the main gas line shut off?

Avidchef, I live in earthquake area.. So if the range slide out across the floor, and the flexible gas line tore off, the excess flow valve would keep gas from escaping into my kitchen.

I would venture than almost no one installs these things. Most of the people who live around here don't even know what they are.

As I mentioned, I also had a large earthquake safety gas valve installed outside where the gas line enters the building. It's got a large stainless ball bearing in it- almost the size of a tennis ball. Anything over 5.4 and the gas to the building shuts off.

I think some folks who posted here are getting the flex hose that goes from the solid gas piping to the range, mixed up with the excess flow safety valve. They are two different things.

Yes, I can simmer with only one burner on.

I don't know how long these things have been out but the range I put in a rental 5years ago has one It came in a kit with the flex hose
Months ago when I put my new range in I got the same kit at lowes on York Pa. I don't know if it's new code maybe it is in some areas where I am code is that a valve be near the appliance. My valve is in the basement just under where the range is located. So I put the excess flow valve behind the range. It is supposed to reduce the gas flow to a safe level if the flex hose bursts or gets ripped off for any reason like earth quake or someone pulling it out to far for cleaning
