I just recorded a cassette for a friend yesterday using "Spin It Again"
From the cassette player I used these 2 wires

Urlee, you notice that Randy plugged into the Line In on his computer, not the Mic plug. This may be why it sounded so bad when you played it.

I dont have Randy's plugs on my cassette player and have recorded a lot of tapes using the earphone jack with audacity. It might sound better from the line in or the aux jack. I have used the line in. Did you have the right input selected in audacity? If you select 'stereo mix' it records everything that comes from the sound card. Any of the other selections only record will record only from that source. Here is where the input selection is made:

As far as wav or mp3, I make music cd's with windows media player. It records so that your cd plays on any cd player.

You want to plug into line-in on your sound card. I use Audacity to record from the headphone output in boombox to line-in on computer's sound card. It does a superb job.

I don't have a line out on my boombox either so had to use the headphone jack but-------where would the Line In be on here?

The new one would probably install over the old one, but it couldn't hurt to uninstall the old one first.

Strange, the menu drops down for me with Audacity 1.3 Beta (Unicode)

It's got to have something to do with the way preferences aare set. When I click edit, preferences under the Audio I/O tab I see:

I did uninstall the 1.2.3. and installed the 1.2.6.

Mine was the same except I had mono so changed to 2[stereo] to no avail.

No, nothing has to be plugged in. I visited an audacity help forum and did a search for 'source greyed out' and find that your situation is not unique. Maybe you can find an answere there. I'll post a link.
