Browser help

I have a one yr old Dell desktop with Windows XP. I prefer to use Netscape browser, but if I can't get this problem fixed, will be asking around for what I should use. I downloaded Windows updates last Friday. All was fine until the next morning. Netscape comes up the same but then within a minute, would go into its infamous freezes. Over the course of the weekend, I have:

done a system restore

run my own virus/spam scans

run Housecall

did google search on netscape.exe

uninstalled Netscape...downloaded/installed again

After I did a fresh install, the problem 'seemed' to go away, but it's not. Just taking longer to freeze. Now it stays on for 20 to 30 minutes instead of 1.

Any help that you can give me, I'd appreciate. FYI, I do NOT feel comfortable doing a registry edit.

I'm not great at those, but sometimes I get results by right clicking on the X & selecting the choice to 'show picture'. Then again, sometimes not.

this is all info for AVAST the I ball that is beside the blue A ball you want to right click that and tell it to join the A ball, can not remember the terminology but it will just make one ball, you can also drag it onto the A ball to do that. You will need to change the proxy settings in your IE browser so that your web shield is working properly. here are the directions for how to do that Configuration of the Web Shield HTTP proxy If you bring up Avast screen with a regular left click then click details it will open up so you can see the various aspects, it should be set to High sensitivity then if you scroll down on the left to the web shield if you see no activiity and zero counted then you know you have to set up that proxy as instructed in my link, if you do not that part is not working and you want that to work. Following the directions is very very easy I have had to do it on all of mine.

This is the extra coding that wordpad has added so that the page comes out like you have made it. Is this file saved as a "doc" file? If so then that is the reason for all the extra coding. It is better to learn html coding with notepad since it will not add any coding on its own. If it was notepad that you used in making the webpage perhaps you tried opening the page in wordpad to see it. this lets wordpad add its own coding so that it can read the page. When you saved the file did you save it as a txt file and added the .htm or .html after the file name? you must do this in order for IE to show the file as a html webpage. I learned html using notepad before there were editors to do html coding. I have tried many editors and i still think Microsoft Front Page is the best for people who just want to have their own webpage. You can find FP on ebay for around $50 for FP2000. I would choose this since it makes it easy to make webpages and you can concentrate on the graphics and content of your pages rather than the html coding. While it is still good to know html coding, it is not necessary to understand it all. JamesS

You just need to turn that function on. On the far right of your address bar there will be three bars stacked on top of each other... click on that.. Click on SETTINGS... scroll down that page and select ADVANCED SETTINGS. Scroll down until you see LANGUAGE, and put a check mark in the box that says "Offer to translate pages that aren't in a language I read" Google Chrome was a bit different at first - but I love it now. So fast. Love using the main bar at the top as my search bar.

Windows has screwed everything up royally. I'm stuck with IE7..slower than molasses in January. Foxfire is a big favorite, as is Opera.

I like my Active X programs and I live to game ... R U game?

IE is for me because of Active X.

gadgets, i hope you get an answer cause i'm having a similar problem with the same version netscape.

it freezes, when i try to click a link or re load.

all i get is the top line on the screen (currently: browser help-computer help forum-...) , then a few seconds to a few minutes later it comes back to a full screen, and it's fine... until the next time!

arghhh, it's a PITT (pain in the tookus)

Melanie: Thanks for posting that you are having same problem!! I've had this same version of Netscape since late fall of 2006 and got freezes the usual way, without it changing how the screen looked...now and then, but now it's like you described with the screen changes.

If it was me, I would install a prior version to see if it does the same thing. If it doesn't, then the version you have is buggy and needs to be uninstalled

Melanie: You can goof up my name and call me gidget or whatever. I come from a BIG family and have been called by siblings names all my life.

Thank you so much for posting this info. Someone on another of these forums posted they were having same problem so I am now convinced it's Netscape's problem. If they don't get it straightened out soon, I'll look into using another browser.

So why not use Firefox or Opera in the meantime? You can have as many browsers as you wish. They can be removed too if you find they do not live up to expectations.

Looks like you may have to add
127.0.0.1 ns8-stats.netscape.com
to your hosts file.

Marf: If you go the remove programs, and remove ie7, doesn't
it automatically roll it back to ie6? it seems to me that i red this somewhere...

That's what Microsoft says, but many of us believe it leaves some changes in place, and that, while it looks like your previous version of IE6, it isn't. After I did a rollback from IE7, my "IE6" was buggy and slow, and I've now abandoned IE in favor of Opera and Firefox.

It seems that a number of people are having the same type of problem. I would download firefox and use it until there is a fix for it. It usually doesn't take them that long to fix things if a number of people have the same problem. You might like firefox though and never go back.
