Not planning on matching... I like the way the plastic ones disappear. Have you already chosen paint colors?

Our designer said that switchplates is something we really do not want to highlight, which is what ORB would do. He recommended getting as close of a color to our walls, which was off white.

and in regard to the switch plates, ...architect said: "don't even think of using the plastic ones..." interior designer friend #1 says, "what time is it? i haven't had a drink yet and you're already bothering me?" and interior designer friend #2 says, "honey, please. get the ORB plates."

I may be a little odd on this (hmm, I may be a little odd on a lot of things), but I buy the nicest proportioned plastic plates I can find, scuff them up with fine sandpaper, prime them, and then paint them to match the walls. Oh, and I paint the little screws too. I only paint the actual switch/outlet if I'm doing a really deep wall color. Otherwise, they seem to disappear well enough.

I wanted to have the outlets placed horizontally in the baseboards, but that's just one of many battles I became too tired to fight.

This was the standard positioning when electrical service was introduced in homes in the late 19th Century. However, they migrated to the walls, where installation is easier. There's no Code restriction in my jurisdiction, but the walls are where the receptacles stayed.

Though Leviton might disagree, receptacles and switches are generally not considered design features of a home. I use bone-coloured Decora switches that blend well into the muted decor I prefer. For period authenticity I would lean towards reproductions of the button switches, often inlaid with mother of pearl. Screwless switches and sleek controls would be consistent with the look of high-tech sleek modern homes.

i'm going to have to check with designer friend #1 again tomorrow, after lunch since that's when he has his first drink. i just can't bring myself to use the plastic. it's not that i want to highlight the switchplates; i consider them a necessary evil so don't really see any point in hiding them.

it's funny with everything that's going on right now, i've chosen to obsess over THIS.

We have very light walls and white trim in our current 1940 house. I used ORB plates to match the door hardware, and I'm very happy with them. I did the outlet covers to match. They look nice, don't show dirt like past plastic/painted ones I've had, and are easy to wipe clean. I say, try one out in a room and see if you like it or not before you commit. It can't hurt. Besides, your house is so gorgeous that it will look good either way!

designer friend #1 just emailed me (notice it's well after lunch and that first or third drink!) and he says "paint the damn things". well, i have to say i like this idea as it is much less expensive. but still unsure.
