Defective monitor.

I have a new problem with my monitor. When I have a picture, or writing, on the screen, I get a shadow going to both edges of the screen. The shadow is the height of the picture or writing. In other words, if I have a 2 inch picture in the middle of my screen, I'll have a 2 inch shadow extending to both edges of the screen. The darker the picture, the darker the shadow. Bold type makes a darker shadow than regular type. The shadows appear only on the monitor. If I print out a page, the shadows don't print. If I send an e-mail, the shadows do not appear on the recipient's monitor. I've tried to include a picture, to give a rough idea of what it looks like but, as I said, the shadows don't appear on a print-out, so I had to construct a simulation.

If you look at the picture in the link , and assume that the vertical red lines are the right and left edges of the screen, you will see that the shadow from the black line is darker than the one from the blue line.

SAny ideas? The monitor is only about 3 months old. I think it should just be replaced.

The best place to start is connecting the monitor to another computer. If the problem doesn't go away, then it's the monitor and you should contact the manufacturer.

If that doesn't do it or you don't have access to another computer. Reboot the computer leaving it off for 30 seconds or so. Reseat the video cable. If you have a separate video card, reseat the video card. Check for the latest, great video drivers and install them according to the directions (which usually means uninstalling the existing ones first).

Thanks. I'll try these things today, but I don't think it'll do much good, as I spent over an hour with the tech support guy, doing the things he told me to try.

granms, it took me quite a while to study/read through your posts. I see what you mean and I do know that there is a difference between trying to do a recovery and doing a restore. I am trying to protect myself in case the same thing happens to me as happened to you and when zep mentioned the "Vista installation disk"......well tlhat sounded like something I needed to have. I DO have the Factory recovery disk. I asked for them when I bought my computer from HP, and they were sent with the computer. I also made recovery disk myself, so I have two sets of recovery. Thanks for taking the time and effort in giving so much detail and info in your posting, I'm sure I'm not the only one who has studied it and gotten good information from it.

I found the warranty and it is 3 years PSP (Performance service plan). I'm wondering if I could bring it to where I purchased it (Best Buy) and see if they can look at it. When I said it isn't on long sometimes I meant I'm not on the computer a lot so it is hard to say if it would happen more if I were on for longer periods at a time. I'm usually on for about a half hour a day. Sometimes the screen goes crazy and sometimes not. When it goes crazy the bottom 2/3 is black then the upper 1/3 is bright (clear) but vibrating and in between the 2/3 and 1/3 screen is a very bright line.

I took the new monitor back to Best Buy. The "geek" girl hooked it up to a computer. She couldn't get any sound to come out so she told me it doesn't have integrated speakers. I told her that I had used a wire with greenish/yellow ends going from the monitor to the computer. So she found one, plugged it in and turned on some music. I couldn't hear it over the noise of the store. She had me lean way in over the counter, and said "Can't you hear it?" I said "Yes, barely, but shouldn't it be louder than that?" She told me that she didn't think there was anything wrong with it, she just thought it was made to not be very loud. They let me exchange it for another like it and it's the same, half the volume or less of my older one. I guess HP wasn't selling enough external speakers so they thought by reducing the volume on the cheap monitors they'd sell some.

Intelliflo Power Consumption During Idle

I just installed a brand new Intelliflo (011018) pump. When I measured the power consumption using efergy power monitor (with all other circuits turned off), I measured about 120 watt when running at 1000 rpm and 100 watts when idle/stop. The power consumption during idle is what concerning. The 100 watt seems excessive for the electronics. Has anyone measured it for the same model (011018) or could provide the number for comparison? Someone over at TFP forum suggested that Pentair switching power supply causes incorrect power reading during idle and the power consumption is under 5 watt during idle. The bottom line is that I just want to make sure that I don't have defective unit.

Your problem may be the video card, the monitor, the setup functions built into the monitor, or setup parameters in the software drivers for the monitor and card.

to check out the monitor, connect it to another computer, even a laptop will do. Before you connect the monitor, set the display mode of the test computer to a generic VGA (640 x 480 pixels). Almost all monitors will recognize this mode and it is supported by generic drivers. This circumvents the need to install a driver for your monitor. If the monitor works ok on VGA, there is a good chance that it is ok for other modes.
