Thanks, Raven. I'm sure he's behind on lots of stuff. Early in 2009, I had him change his update settings to notify him of updates, but not automatically download. That was to hold off on sp1 (at a time when I think I read here that folks were having trouble with it - but I didn't follow that topic, so didn't realize sp1 had become a good idea and that sp2 followed). We also set it that way bc. his computer was automatically updating and then rebooting when he was in the middle of doing other things. So this was to allow him to time his own downloads and installations. But he just never thought of it - and I didn't think I needed to keep track for him. I do keep track of his Avast, superantispyware, malwarebyte and spywareblaster. Every now and then when he's done surfing I have him leave out the laptop and go ahead and update and scan. I'll have to keep track of more than that, obviously. I got foxit reader on my ancient laptop in my office and love it. It takes so little room and does what I need quickly. Do you like pdf-xchange viewer more than foxit reader? Or does he need to use firefox to use foxit reader? I installed firefox for him - and set up tabs with the places he likes to go (did that in the summer) - but he hasn't used it. He's a bit resistant to tech changes. He balked when I got Tivo's - although he loves it now. He's a musician - and I got him Protools so he could record the music he wrote. That was over 1 1/2 years ago - and he hasn't learned it yet - he's barely scratched the surface. Last spring he bought an Imac bc. it was better for recording music. And now he's finally setting up his den and equipment. I'm hoping he'll actually learn the software this year. I'll take care of the rest for him so the only learning curve he has is Protools (certainly the most challenging of them all). But I digress. I'll check his other updates and run Secunia - I'm pretty sure I already put that on his computer last year. Thanks. Lynn.

I wouldn't worry about updating drivers either. A bigger concern for me would probably be the mechanism by which I/you "... have been getting the message to update my drivers ...". When/where do you get that message? Have you scanned for malware recently? Despite the green WOT rating, the WOT user reviews tell a different story. WOT rating of driverupdate.net Personally, I think they'd just love to stick their grubby hands into your bank account and withdraw $29.97/year.

Thank you each and every one for your help. I went over today and (hopefully) got the printer working. When I connected the printer to the system, as damccoy suggested, it updated itself and seems to be working fine. I think I was just anticipating problems because the system requirements for the printer indicated it wasn't compatible with win 7, and I was trying to be prepared. Thanks again. You guys are great!

That is what I've already done. It's what I mean when I said I didn't find any help from help and support. I try to get this fixed, get frustrated and shut down. When I try again, I've forgotten what I've done, so I do it again. I've done all those steps many times. I'm surprised that getting a router to work, setting up the home network, has been so difficult. Many pages of instructions printed out, many hand written, which is difficult for me. Have laptop accessing internet, which is good. Am just trying to share the printer that is plugged into home computer with XP. If this is not possible, I wish someone would tell me and I can go on to something else. I have no formal training on computers. Still a lot I see on here that I have no idea what is it, what it does, but I can read it. Like reading the "services" in control panel. I've been trying to get this to work for several weeks. I just noticed in sharing and network, that it only shows the laptop(Vista) router and internet. Then I hit "map network" and did not get the home (XP) computer to show. Have used or performed all steps shown in Vista to get this to work and it does not. HP website states that my old psc 950 driver is already installed onto Vista. I don't know what to do next.
