Bathroom with 2 entrances: what do you think?

We have one bathroom in our upstairs, along with 3 bedrooms and a small office. Just I and my husband living here full time. We're renovating the bath, and my contractor suggested adding a door between the bathroom and the master bedroom - creating a sort of psuedo en-suite. In your opinion, would an extra entry add value or function to the bathroom? Or is it just strange?

If I don't do the extra doorway, I can add some linen storage.

I posted a long, complex version of this question earlier, and I thank those of you who responded. But if anyone has a gut reaction either way, I'd love to hear it.

My parents have a "master bathroom" that has a door from the master bedroom into the bathroom and also a door from the hall into the bathroom. For them, this is extremely functional. It allows them quick/easy access to the bathroom whether from their room at night or in the day when they're elsewhere in the house. They also use the bathroom for a sort of "air lock" system when pets need to be contained while certain guests are in the house. The only drawback is the wall space that a door takes up that could be used for something else.

with 3 bedrooms, I might suggest not to do it.

For one thing, it might just end up transmitting sound into the master bedroom. No matter how good the door is and the installation. Then, it might end up looking like you never intended for the other bedrooms to be used as bedrooms. A door to your bedroom can intimidate shy bladders and other body parts, and some people might have a hard time using the bathroom toilet for the main purpose that it was designed for. They also might be shy about flushing it.

I like the 1st & 2nd designs, but I very much do not like the little closet between the tub and toilet areas. It feels awkward. Is it intended as a linen closet? I'd rather tuck it in where you have the towel racks marked on the 2nd design and put your towel racks on the back wall by the tub. Overall, I like the 1st design best, with the separate sink areas, if you can solve that storage problem, but whether that works better than a long double sink really is personal preference and how you and your spouse get ready in the mornings/use the space - My DH & I have difference schedules, so I don't have to think about how to maneuver around each other in the morning (which is good because before I've had my tea - this is a very dangerous time! ;-) ) One idea I have for using design 1 and including a linen space is to put it on the wall by your toilet room door - so inset the toilet room another foot, so you can put a cabinet on that wall - make the doorway a little deeper to the toilet room (hope that makes sense) - the storage wouldn't be 5ft wide, maybe 2.5 or 3ft, but it wouldn't awkwardly overlap the tub. Another thought - shorten the sink across from the shower to 4ft, and put the linen storage 90 degrees on the wall into the closet. (Or turn the island into a linen cabinet) My 2 cents! Thanks all for your responses! LIke PPS said- it won't be used too often so I am not overly concerned about the quality.Unfortunately we only have a $500 budget for the vanity (and top/sink) so I really have to go for the big box store options. (Unless someone in the greater Boston area knows of a local place that can do the same for less). @pps7- it is a decent size, however, the basement plumbing was done when we built the house. Unfortunately, the location of the sink is NOT where I would have wanted it. I wish I could have switched the toilet with it but being the naive sole that I was when we were building- I had no idea what went with what. The location for the sink is teeny (i am almost feeling lucky I can even get a 30" in). The shower appears to be huge- which we weren't expecting but it's what is in the deal. We are using our builder to finish the basement so we are getting a decent deal for everything. I may still look into getting a remnant but i'm not sure how that will work the sink as well.. Seems like it may end up costing more than the $500. I still have some time, but not much! Thanks again!

Nice job! Your bathroom appears to be similar in size to our MB. We installed a small towel bar between the vanity and the toilet (but higher on the wall). Had no other option really. We have a window on the wall opposite the toilet, and an in-swinging bathroom door which covers 1/2 of that wall when the door is open. FWIW, many hotels have those combo train rack/towel bars hanging directly over the toilets, so I wouldn't think hanging your towel(s) between the sink/vanity and toilet would be much different.

Thank you all, I'll try to respond better now that I'm on my computer and not the phone! Ellendi61- thank you. I know. It's a bathroom. You know. Rationally I know. I was so happy with how our powder room turned out that I maybe should have done the same combo- dark cabs, light counter. But I didn't want the counter to look like the old cultured fake marble and I didn't want dark cabs as it's so small. And we used a vanity with an open middle and legs so it is not oppressive at all. But this is different. Thanks pal. I get what you're saying. I totally do. Thank you for the perspective. Amberm145- thank you. I don't find this dull as in boring, but dull as in bland and beige. Maybe I should have gone with the bright blue counter my DS wanted :) Would have spiced things up! And I don't remember exactly what city you're in, but a tile store in Edmonton just sent me 9 samples by like express post at no charge. I love them. So you don't have to go to the train station for me :)

I think if you don't need the storage it is a good idea to add the door. But I think the storage has more value in most situations besides those where there is plenty of storage already.

I wouldn't be too concerned about the added noise due to the doorway, but I'm a heavy sleeper and I assume that everyone who shares a bathroom is accustomed to hearing bathroom noises and being heard.

Thanks - yes, the sound thing concerns me a bit, I have to admit. And storage is practically non-existent in our very vintage house. I really liked the 2-door idea initially, but now I'm leaning toward just a hallway door. I found an old thread on a similar question, and the crowd seemed pretty evenly split between liking the second door and not.
