Where to put the next accent strip?

Been a busy weekend. Started tiling the tub surround.

Hope to finish up next weekend. The seat doesn't slope as much as it looks in the picture, and it's not set yet. I just set it there to see how it would look. It looks steeper because it is resting on the spacers under the wall tile.

There will be room over 2 more of the big tiles, and another strip of the mosaics. It will be all mosaics behind the seat. I think I want to do one of these:

1.Put another row of the big tiles, then the strip, then continue the big tiles to the top.

2.Continue the large tiles and put the strip across the top. I am leaning towards this one because I think it will make the ones behind the seat look complete.

What would you do?

I would put one more large tile then another strip - should be at about eye level. I don't like the idea of the strip across the very top, might look funny and not as impactful.

just a question about your bench - what's it made of? wood or concrete?

I agree, not at the top. I would suggest in line with the top of the doors if they do not go to the ceiling. Probably close to 1 more large tile though hard to tell.

Steve, I know it seemed to be precipitated by my recent orders, with Naylor Creek being the latest source of my plants. However, it was due to the three original hosta that I bought from Lowes that bring thoughts of HVX to mind. While I still have ONLY three in the ground, I figured it best to test the area near them. No local gardens sell hosta in Mobile, to my knowledge. To test those three should not require a big investment now, but if it spread later on, I'd be in trouble. A little preventive maintenance. Take a look at the other thread I just started, about Hosta 'Eternal Father' and HVX and the Hostapedia. I wasn't LOOKING for HVX but when I saw that picture of the plant, it grabbed me....and there was the virus x.

Thanks y'all The rule is vegetation cannot come over the curb. Bottom line. I started with the plants further back, BUUUUT they do reach for the sun and ended up where they are really happy in bazing hot sun with a passiflora carulea and the china rose Mutablis behind them. To edge the moonflowers would mean me out there cutting off the brances with buds all summer. I've dug out the roots of the older plants, there will be younger plants from remaining seeds. But as sad as it makes me, I'll dig them out. I always give some away, so hopefully I'll find more homes for them. New neighbor really enjoys the view but the city program is simply put complaint driven. To keep her from complaining I could offer NOT to complain that her new section of fence that is 10 ft tall is out of code or I could offer NOT to turn her in for allowing her yard crew to leave bags of trash out a day or two before trash day. Code says they can only be out at 7pm day before. But I really don't want to engage in that. Sooo, I see zebra grass and sedum in my future and Moon flower give away too. I moved the big old roots into the back yard. I guess it's time to change the show. grateful for all the great ideas! cynthia

I think a transition of some sort between different materials usually results in a better looking wall than no transition, much of that depends on how similar or dissimilar the adjacent materials will be. A small pencil or some other liner can help the eye and the brain more easily move across the wall, and it often sets accentuates the components of the wall instead of having them muddle one another. While there are things I like and prefer, we don't always see things the same. Glass next to glass might transition just fine, glass next to ceramic might look better with a liner. Color transitions can be a different animal, to me "it depends" on the materials and the colors. Transition pieces can also help when adjacent materials are of a different thickness. They can also help when they are different sizes or set in different patterns. It really is in the eye of the beholder. But what I've found is that as in your case, if "it doesn't look right", then the homeowner knows that something else is needed in the design, but they just don't know how to make the leap. This may sound silly, but you want transitions to look planned and not haphazard, and the material acting as the transition piece should be subservient to the other materials. Meaning it should compliment them, not dominate them. The best I can offer is to "work on it" and get something that is appealing to you. As to the ceiling, if the planned pattern seems too "matchy" or not "matchy enough" then sometimes it can help to take a different path. Oh thanks for the praise:). I think the bleak economy and years of neutrally dominant decor has left us craving a bit more interest maybe. Mtr. I love your beach home's wallpapered rooms it was what started me thinking I was ready to try a small dose! There are many different removable brands of wallpaper even Sherman Williams carry some but I must embarrassingly admit that mine is from none other than Devine and found in the decor aisles of your local Target. I picked it to practice with but am happy enough to keep it til it fails to make me smile. It was not super cheap though, it runs about $30 per 3ft of wall this tiny closet used three of their rolls. Thanks, I usually like them at eye level but in a previous thread I was advised I should do something different from the other bathroom in the house.

Eye level would be next. And I think it might look funny if it was 1 tile, then 2, then 2.

There won't be a door, there will be a curtain.

Mine is wood which has been covered with Densguard and Redgard. The top of the seat will be a solid piece of Corian.

To all you guys who do this for a living, I give you A LOT of credit. Though this isn't my first tile job, but it always takes a lot more time and patience then I expect. Of course you may find your bookkeeping time to be the same :)

I also agree with one more tile and then the strip, bit for another reason. It'll be symetrical. On the bottom, you have one row, and then the strip. Doing it this way, you'll have the top strip, and then one last row of tile.

Thanks everybody, you were all right.

I put up the next row of the mosaic behind the seat, and I realized there would have been a problem since the spaces on the mosaic mats were thinner then the grout lines on the large tiles. If I waited until the top, they probably would not line up.

I put up the next row of the large tiles then set the accent strip tighter, so I can probably fudge the mosaics a little so the will line up. Hope to have it all set this weekend.

I used to do tiling on the floors my dad's old house. Now that I'm disabled you can't use my arms and of the parts due to nerve damage ( I talk using voice dictation ) but I think about this tiling jobs and I just am filed with that urge to tile. I really enjoyed it and I found it very easy minus the sweat and labor but that's not the hard part.

The hard part was always the patterns eg like above... . Of course I actually didn't find it hard, I just out different patterns in it I liked. So do what you like and don't worry about it. Make it fun and do while you can, because one day you will won't be able to, whether due to time, money, old age, lack of opportunity etc. ENJOY! I wish I could.

Heartpeace, sorry you can't do this anymore. I find it fun too, but it is definitely not as easy as it looks.

enduring - Thanks for the compliment. I finished up yesterday, and can't wait to grout next weekend.

DH - Commented on the drive home "I guess we should get the toilet next weekend". Funny how the thought of installing a toilet can make me so excited, but that will mean the bathroom is almost finished!!!
