Where to buy a used computer?

Can someone suggest a trusted source for buying a used computer? I'm looking for a basic model with at least a P4 processor and 512MB ram. I would like to buy one without an operating system and another with XP.

I googled used computers and found loads of online used distributors but it is not something I've ever done so I thought I'd ask around if someone has a good link or two they would share.

I would start with local computer stores - i.e., not big box stores.

Check out local governments for their auction web sites or how they dispose of them. This includes local, state, police, school boards. All of them need to dispose of computers when upgrading. I included the link below purely as an example, I don't expect you to come racing up the the Great White North any time soon ;-)

Fruitjar is right about the local small computer guy. There are thousands of ex office machine out there that need a good home. Be sure to have all the major components listed on the bill of sale.

Check out your local Value Village, Goodwill or other charity store for a mouse and keyboard for peanuts then this cannot muddy your deal.

Be very wary of your local craigslist or Kiijii because many of those advertisers make a business out of it. Not suggesting they are all crooks at all but caution before can avoid a headache later.

okay, okay okay! I'm an I D I O T ! lol.. I called office depot and they said they had them. Well, I've spent 1/2 hour THREE TIMES looking around for them. They are NOT with the copier paper! I have been spending my time looking around all the "specialty papers".. glossy photo paper, glossy card stock.. etc.. it is with overhead projectors! AACCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKK! lol.. thanks! thank you Arsty! lol I went to office depot and bought there brand as it is WAY cheaper! lol....

I don't know what went out. You would think that since so many folks had that kind of a problem that they would have come up with a fix for it. I guess they fixed it in the newer models. Thanks Owbist for all your help. I'll check out the link. I was reading another posting related to the Windows mail and it sounds like it isn't too popular. I may check out Thunderbird. I have called on the HP support quite a bit recently. Didn't have any major issues with them except for not being able to get the chat-support to work and them saying there wasn't anything wrong with the site. Susie, what do you mean tech support 24/7 for life?

well Shax glad to hear you are moving on up LOL it seems to have pretty good specs, I like HP products I have a few of them here and use them daily with little problem. I am sure you will love the new machine. Be sure you set up all the security programs on it asap and get those windows updates as quick as it goes on line, there will likely be several. It is amazing how quickly a brand new pc put online with out security in place can become infected, so definitely get the firewall and antivirus set up on it prior to going online. Old computer died -now have to use Windows 8

Last night I discovered that I cannot play DVDs with the home edition of Windows 8 - at least not without third party software. I installed VLC, and it will play the DVDs, but without sound. I never learned how to use Windows Media Center, and so I have always used other media players, but they will not work as well with 8. I installed Media Player Classic (my favorite from before), but it will not play DVDs, and it will now only play a few of the FLV files that I have. The ones that will not play on MPC will play on WinAmp, but I would prefer to have one player that would do everything. I guess I'll have to go back to watching DVDs on the TV with a DVD or BluRay player. Or I will try to find an inexpensive way to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro. I wish I had been given that option from the beginning. The reason that a DVD player is not included with Windows 8 is that MS expects DVDs to become obsolete in the near future, but Kevin and I both do not believe that to be the case. Kevin should know since he is in DVD sales at Sony, and while sales have already peaked, they are still steady and are a huge business. People still have vinyl records, and so I think DVDs should be expected to be around for a while. Apple removed the DVD drive from their notebooks long ago, and that is another reason I won't buy their products. I'll give you another update when I get this problem resolved. Lars

Check craigslist for your city.
I've bought used computers for cheap.
Usually one on one with private party sellers.
P4 should be $75 - $150, unless you want to get into the 3.0 Ghz range.

check with local schools,Police Dept..they have sale of cionfiscated objects. Local colleges and even your computer reapir stores

There is always EBay, but just make sure that it is a reputable seller

Thanks Terry, thats the kind of place I'm talking about. I live in a small town so certain sellers are unreachable for me. If anyone else has any others let me know so I can compare but this dickerdeals looks pretty good so far, right up my alley.
