Gmail and Thunderbird Help

I accessing my gmail through the website and then I set up Thunderbird to use as my client. Well, I REALLY hate it and want to go back to accessing my email on the web but now Thunderbird has all my emails and I can't figure out how to restore them to my gmail on the web.

And every time I go into Thunderbird to try to do it, it just takes away and loads the new mail that I have on the web.

Some one told me to foward them to myself but I tried that and every single time it stops at 99%. Also, won't forwarding them to myself just put them into Thunderbird again since I have to have that program open to forward them so it'll be open to receive those emails?

I would really appreciate some help with this!

Without looking, on the run, you can set Thunderbird so that it will not access mail until you request it to, that's the way I do it, look under "Tools" "Options" and look for something about getting email

Then, look for "export" in Thunderbird, one of the drop-down menus, you should be able to export all your email files, that will not erase them, just make them available to other uses. Now, I can't say if your new email client will import the Thunderbird output, but if not: "shame on your new email client".

This is all very good advice but see... I'm special.

I can't find the option to not let TB access mail until I request it to.

And I also can't find an export option anywhere.

I finally did check into the Verizon Mail site. I do not have verizon.net as my e-mail address, because the Verizon cellular broadband does not have an email server. I have had the gmail accounts for several years, even when I had satellite service, so no reason to change these. But they work perfectly in my Thunderbird program. I hardly ever go to gmail via a browser except to check the junk files, in case a legitimate mail got put there. I did misunderstand your original question, forgetting that many have verizon.net e-mail accounts via DSL or FIOS.

Hi casi, I found this and I hope it will help you. I have Thunderbird on my desktop that's getting mail from my Gmail. IMAP works such that what you do in the client is reflected to the server, and vice versa. That's the point of it vs. POP3. Any messages you want to retain on the GMail server, you can't delete them from the (IMAP) GMail account tree in Thunderbird. I *never* keep long-term copies of mail on a server. It's *my* mail, I want it archived to *my* computer. IMO there's too much risk of a hacker getting access by brute-force or a server-side security flaw. My computer is more secure, less likely to be hacked, and I can back up the data. I have messages in Thunderbird that date 10 years back. And archived data MUCH older from Outlook Express.

I finally phrased my question so that Google found a similar query and solution (from 2006) that still worked 8 years later! In case this might help another user, here are the step from the Moderator at MozillaZine. Ã¢ÂÂClick on the imported address book name in the left hand pane. Now click on any name in the right hand pane and then use menu path Edit->Select All, or press Ctrl-A. Now drag and drop the data from the imported address book to the Personal Address Book. Once you have confirmed that everything has copied over properly you can delete the imported address book.Ã¢ÂÂ I would add that this didn't work smoothly until I deleted special lists/groups. Once they were removed, the whole address book previously under the Ã¢ÂÂThunderbird AddressesÃ¢ÂÂ name quickly and correctly transferred to Ã¢ÂÂPersonal Address BookÃ¢ÂÂ. I'm a happy camper.

in thunderbird click tools, account settings, server settings under your gmail, then uncheck automatically download messages.

That's it, now for the export. I see there isn't an "export" function/tool, one has to find the mail folders and simply copy them somewhere else, e.g., into the mail folders of another email client, or into another email client via its Import function/tool.

Thunderbird does a "good job" of hiding the mail folders. To find the path go again to "account settings" (another way of getting there is to right click your mail folder directory, then click properties ) When at "account settings" highlight "local folders", this will give you a path to local folders in the right hand side of the account settings dialog box. There click "browse" that will open a file manager style window. There you'll see both local folders and something else that holds the folders created for In, Out, Sent, Trash, and all the other personal folders you created there. In my case it is a folder titled: "postoffice.worldnet..." Clicking on that you should see the names of all your folders. If you want to move this elsewhere I suggest you right click "postoffice..." and say copy to wherever you want it.

In my case (typical I think) the path is: My Computer/C/ Documents and Settings/My Name/application data/thunderbird/profiles/mail/ here are two folders "Local" and "Postoffice.."
