Hi zep, I have been to that page and gone on to read the article and as much as I try, I can't seem to do it. It asks me to double check my mail preferences and I can't find mail preferences anywhere.

Well I use Thunderbird so let me look and get back to you.

I think all you need to do is in thunder bird, go to tools, account settings, open the correct e-mail account,

And check the information on the out going Server SMTP I believe that is where the problem is, if this setting is not correct that is the error you will get, your able to receive mail here so that much is right on the incoming server.

I agree it sounds like you have either a typo or something wrong in your outgoing server info, if this is the exact same email as your others then try copy and paste from the others you have set up already into this one since they are working and this one is not. Only of course if they all use the same exact email client, example they are all gmail accounts then the server info for all would be the same.

I went back and re-entered the info for the third account I'm trying to set up (for the umpteenth time).

Here are the steps I took:
1.Add Acct - I chose EMAIL

Identity:
2. Enter the name you'd like to appear in the "FROM" field - I entered my name
3. Enter your email address - I entered aolscreenname@aol.com (using the one I'm trying to set up)

Server Information:
4. Select type of incoming server - I chose imap
5. Enter name of your incoming server - I entered: imap.aol.com

Just under this field was a note: Your existing outgoing (SMTP) user name, "pfmastin" (which is my main screen name on AOL, *not* the screenname of the account I'm trying to set up) will be used. You can modify outgoing server settings by choosing Account Settings from the Tools menu.

I then finished the set up entering the rest of the information. I think it was just my user name and email address of the account I'm trying to set up.

So....maybe the answer lies in the having "pfmastin" as my outgoing user name? But, I can't find the place to look for that and change it in the Tools, Account Settings menu.

I'm hoping I wrote this out clearly enough. Again, thank you so much.

zep and raven, after I wrote all this, I see I could have probably just asked the question about where to get to the outgoing (SMTP) user name!

I really like Thunderbird and am hoping to get past this bump. Then I'll ask about their IM add on.

Hi zep, Thanks for the moral support. :) When I do my setup for this third account, there is no place to type in the smpt outgoing user name during the setup process. Instead, it gives me the message I referred to above. Do you know where I can find the place in settings to go in and find this and change it? I think that must be the problem. Thanks again.

Zep, I'm making progress! I'm so excited. I found the place where I changed the SMTP outgoing user setting and did that. It is sending email! I have one other glitch. Even though it's sending out the email, the "sending email" window pops up and says STATUS: copying to Sent folder and the progress bar just keeps going and going and never finishing. There must be some place to correct that and I'll see what I can find. Well, thank you anyway...you've spurred me on.
I might get you to call your nephew if I can't figure this out. ;)

Good, now you can answer all the (Thunderbird) account set up questions that come to the forum.

excellent work! see if you just keep digging around you can usually find the culprit! and it is always good to post what you found that was the culprit just in case someone else comes across the same problem.

Oh shoot, I celebrated too soon. After I got the third account working, the other two won't send. I'm missing a major point somewhere. I'll keep working on it and let you know if I get everything working. Bummer. :)

I think I did. But, I was doing some more reading today and read that I need an account for each screen name. I'm still working on it. If you know of anyone who can give me step by step on how to set up three screen names, I'd be *so* happy. It's gotten to be a personal challenge now. :)

Hey zep...I did it, I did it! I really did it! :) I can send and receive from each account. Each AOL screen name has to have its own account set up with proper port #s, matching user names, etc. raven, you're right...I just had to keep digging around. I found a Mozilla forum note from 2006 where someone had done a good job of explaining. Thank you again for pushing me on.
