question about setting up Mozilla Thunderbird

I am trying to set up Thunderbird and am getting an Send Message Error. I want to set it up to receive AOL email. I no longer have a "paid" account with AOL, but I use their web mail email service. Should I be able to do this through Thunderbird?

Here is what I've done so far...

I downloaded Thunderbird and followed the directions at this site http://joemanna.com/articles/accessing-aol-mail-mozilla-thunderbird/ to set it up.

I composed a test email and sent it to myself at myscreenname@aol.com. A box comes up that says "enter your password for myscreenname@imap.aol.com: After I enter the password that I set up Thunderbird with, the box continues to pop up asking me again for my password. Behind that window, there is another window that says

Send Message Error

"The message could not be sent because connecting to SMTP server smtp.aol.com failed. The server may be unavailable or is refusing SMTP connections. Please verify that your SMTP server setting is correct and try again, else contact your network adminstrator"

I like Thunderbird because jpeg images can be inserted directly in the email and AOL doesn't allow that anymore.

Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong and how I can correct it? Thanks so much!

Yes. AOL and migrated Netscape users can read their AOL/AIM mail using Thunderbird. In order to do this, setup a new mail account (File > New > Account...) and select IMAP as the incoming server type and enter imap.aol.com or imap.aim.com as the address. Enter your screen name as the user name.

I'll try and explain my system since I cant message you or link my website. Here is a pic of my test system I bought a 10' section of 4" thin walled PVC pipe..you'll want thin walled. plus 4 endcaps for the pipes, I cut the 10' pipe down to 5' sections. get a 2 7/8" hole saw or as close to 3" without going over. I drilled out a line of holes in the pvc 9" on center. leaving about 3-4" at the ends of the pipes to keep water from splashing out. I also bought 1/2" electrical conduit bulkhead fittings..they're plastic fittings with a threaded end on one side so you can feed it through a wall and attach the nut on the other side. you find them in the electrical section at home improvement stores. I bought the ones that have a 90 degree elbow. like this but mine have and elbow section on one side I drilled one hole in the endcap and attached the bulkhead fitting, on the opposite side of the pipe, opposite the holes for your plants i attached another bulkhead fitting. i did this for each pipe. then i drilled holes in the lid of the tote, one for an airtube line, one for the pump feed line and one for the return line. I ran 1/2" tubing to the bulkhead fitting in the endcap, and then connected each tube with 1/2 hose and finally a short section to drain back to the reservoir. i start the seeds in rockwool and keep them in a shallow plastic tote under a florescent shop light, fed 2x a day until the root system is strong enough to transfer to the main system. hope that helps and i'll add an article from urban garden magazine, step by step with pics.I tried the square tubes and didnt like them, the and caps dont fit tight and it's a pain to seal them Here is a link that might be useful: DIY

hello, the machine is only 3 years old,yes i did destroy all the data on it after i formatted.i still have the larger drive but it won't read it. last night a neighbor gave me a windows 2000 disc and i formatted the drive again and it worked;it saw the full capacity of the drive and is ready to use, however when i try to bring the second drive with 225 + gigs of data on it it will not see it no matter how i switch things around bios won't read it, so i took it out, the drive i have working is set to master and is the only drive in the pc but bios says it is a secondary slave drive but it is on the primary ide channel and set to master!!everything in bios is set to auto detect drives,but as soon as i connect the other drive as a slave drive and reboot, the computer freezes and gets stuck on the post screen and hangs.funny thing is when i take that drive and put it in the hard drive enclosure that converts regular drives to use with usb and plug it into the computer i am on right now and reboot, windows comes up and says : found new hardware,mass storage usb device,your hardware is installed and ready to use,it even gives me a new drive letter,shows the drive as a western digital drive but... when i click on the drive letter it says please insert a disk into drive j....hmmm

The targeted emails come from various sources - so I can't just filter that way. On my neighborhood listservs, I may save emails in folders such as professional recommendations, things to do, etc. Then there are work emails. And others. Within gmail, I label them - and archive them. Not sure if this means they are now in folders with those label names? I would like to be able to save some of these folders to PC. I had thought Thunderbird was the way to do it. I have several thousand emails in my gmail account (due to listservs). I don't necessarily want to erase them or sort through them now - but I don't want to import those into Thunderbird or save them to PC. If I imported everything into Thunderbird, it doesn't seem to import them in the groupings (labels/folders) I have set up in gmail. It would be hugely inefficient to import a few thousand emails, just to save perhaps a hundred or so - and have to delete everything else. Paulsm - I don't want to bring all those emails into Thunderbird to begin with. I do see that from within Thunderbird, I have the option to save to PC. But I don't want to have to resort those emails in Thunderbird after I have already sorted them in Gmail. Damcoy - I was thinking something along the lines of what you suggested - but it's pretty cumbersome. The emails don't come from specific addresses. I could go to my labels - select all from within that folder/label - and then gmail allows me to move it - but only to another label - or IMAP (sent/trash or drafts). So none of those work. I did think about selecting all those emails (but I think I have to do it individually - which is a pain) - creating a new email address I could forward them to - and then link the Thunderbird to just import from that newly created email address. I'm thinking there has to be a better way. Maybe there's a way to do this without using Thunderbird at all. I want to be able to save certain emails to a folder on my PC. Anyway to do this? It seems that the mail you had in Thunderbird is gone so at this point I would open your address book in Thunderbird and use the tools > option choice to export your address book. I would then use the Revo Uninstaller (free if you don't have it) at it's highest setting and unintall Thunderbird then download the newest version and install it and set up your account again. You could then import your address book from the file you saved. If you go to att.net and check your mail there you may find that much of it is still there. It depends on your settings in Thunderbird.

Below is the link at AOL for setting up mail for Thunderbird. Review it and see if the instructions are the same as you posted above.
Personally, I still use AOL-7 after setting my account to a free one, but only for email, never browsing. HTH.

you should be entering your actual aol password info is that what you are doing? it sounds like you set up a different password for thunderbird and you are using that one instead??

You have to give the password for the aol account that you want to access with Thunderbird.I use Road Runner for my email but I only access the website to empty the junk folder on a regular basis because sometimes an email from a forum I belong to gets deposited into the junk folder so I have to check that folder on a regular basis but all other emails are downloaded to Thunderbird.

Raven, you hit the nail on the head...I wasn't using my regular AOL password. DUH. :) It works perfectly!

Thank you, daylilydazed, for the heads up about checking the web AOL spam folder from time to time.

This is such a great group of people. You are willing to share your time and talents and it is greatly appreciated.

One more question. If I wanted to add my husband's AOL screen name so he can use Thunderbird, too, do I just go through the same steps I went through to set up the account? Is creating a new email user the same as creating a new account? Thank you.

You go through the same steps but use his name and his password when it is asked for. No you will be using the same account I think
