viking oven not receiving gas after catch tray removed/cleaned

I rent a house which has a viking range/oven. Everything was working fine when I decided to clean the large stainless steel catch tray. I carefully pulled out the grease catch tray directly below the range and above the oven. I saw that wires hang above the tray so I was careful to remove and insert it carefully and gently. After I put the tray back in the oven does not get gas when the knob is turned on.

When the oven is turned on, the red light turns on by the knob but no sound or smell of gas and I do not hear any ignitor attempting to light. Honestly, I don't remember ever hearing the ignitor click when turning on the oven in the past.

When the broiler is turned on the red light beside the knob turns on and the ignitor glows in top of the oven, but again no sound/smell of gas and the broiler burner does not light.

All burners on the stove ignite and work normally.

The repairman wants $200 just to come to the house, plus any labor/parts cost on top of that.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

If you're renting the apartment, it's the landlord's responsibility to provide a working range. Tell the landlord the range isn't working and get them to fix it.

Hi, I guess I could have posted this in any of several threads about cleaning stainless steel, but since I do have the BS 36" drop-in, I thought I'd post it here. In retrospect, I might have preferred the rangetop, as castironcook2 purchased, but it was $1K more expensive and would have involved more extensive carpentry to get it into our nonstandard countertop. But I'm very happy with the new BS (just a couple of months old at this point). I am running into the cleanup issues, and I'm paying attention to your recommendations (here and in other threads). Simple detergent and water is not working for the splatters any more, so I will be looking for something stronger. There is an old SS hood above the cooktop (from the 1950s?) that was so grungy nothing would clean it. Then I recalled that I have easily cleaned my metal bicycle parts with kerosene, and since this old hood was due for replacement soon anyway, why not try it on the hood? It worked fantastically. Years of grime disappeared in seconds, and now it has a nice matte shine to it. I would feel safe using it on the cooktop too, but I'd like to try something a bit less heavy-duty first. So your suggestions are welcome.

I have a range (NXR 30") that uses the exact same burners as the Wolf. I personally have no problems at all with it, but then again the smallest pot I own is 10", everything else is 11"-14" including the Wok. Plus a large 14X24" Steel Griddle. So I don't have any problem with the larger diameter of the burners and I love having all burners the same where I can have all 4 full blast at 15,000BTU or all 4 at super low simmer and everything in between. As for not being able to "Simmer a pot of sauce" with the Wolf burners that is complete nonsense. I am right now as I type simmering a LARGE pot of Sketti sauce on high simmer. It is in a Swiss Diamond 8 1/2 Qt pot and its at least 2/3rds full. But there is a high simmer and a low simmer. The super low simmer is obviously not for doing a very large pot of sauce, its meant for doing something like keeping mash potatoes warm, or holding an emulsion like hollandaise or a beurre blanc, or melting chocolate and it does so perfectly. That is what is so sweet about these burners is the ability of that super low (melt chocolate on a paper plate low flame)plus the slightly higher simmer that is for large pots of sauce. The high simmer as you can tell works just fine, in fact perfect for simmering a LARGE pot of sauce all day. You can see at least 3 sauce volcanoes coming up in my sauce here, (although a couple are just bubbles that might be hard to make out unless you know where to look) simmers perfectly, any more and it would burn. (Just ran back down to stir it and taste and had 4 bubbling volcanoes going) So obviously Consumer Reports is clueless in that respect. If you have and prefer to use tiny pots then yes you should get something like a Capital Culinarian as those burners would fit you small pot needs better. This is the high simmer with about 5Qts of sketti sauce simmering away just fine right now.

UPDATE: On the Monday after Thanksgiving, I phoned Wolf CS and spoke with a service dept pro who assured me the tech coming the next day would evaluate the oven situation to see if a new control board was needed. When the tech came the next day, he removed the door, quickly made a slight adjustment, and all was fixed!! Just to make sure, he began the self-clean mode about five times. Each time the latch engaged properly and the oven began to heat. Hooray! Now I realize why the upper oven sounded differently than the lower when closing it. The side of the metal door was hitting the side of the oven cavity so what I was hearing was metal scraping metal. The lower door, since it didn't hit, made a satisfying, sturdy "thump" noise. The ovens were floor models and then sat in my garage for months before install. Who knows when the door came out of alignment. I can say that I am happy with the customer service I received from Wolf and from the nearly local repair company. On a funny side note, the repairman was very impressed that I thought to check the web about the oven latch, but even more so that a stranger would be so helpful as to suggest the "push against the door" technique that resolved the problem enough to open and use the ovens. Great job, Gary! I sung the praises of GW KF! Btw, every person I know IRL who heard about my ovens (and there were many) now knows that a GW friend named Gary came to my rescue! Thank you, again! On a sadder side note, the holiday wasn't as joyful as usual without my father. I appreciate the thoughtful messages from you all on this thread. Christmas is going to be even worse, but I'm determined to enjoy my kids and make their holiday a magical one.

Adequate caution was not rendered. The manual states "to speed up the process" run the self-clean cycle 2x. That's on page 35 of the "online" manual in the troubleshooting section. Not all people have a computer and would never know that this process should be done, but even so, the information given does not indicate it is necessary to do so. Plus, they refer to "an odor which is normal" but do not relay the magnitude of how bad the fumes really are. They are so bad that no one should ever have to tolerate going thru this with a brand new oven. For people with respiratory issues or other illnesses, pregnant women, and babies should never have to endure this whether if it is made clear to the consumer or not. This process should take place in the factory instead of polluting lungs and homes. Because I contacted the State of Ohio's Atty General's Office, I received a phone call on Friday from the Asst to the President of GE noting he was calling because he got notice from the Atty Gen Office. He attempted to discuss the issues with me but was very blunt, resistant to my concerns, and denied the validity of everything I reported. I am continuing to work with the Atty General's Office and shall see if anything can be done to correct the situation and at the very least mandate that a tag is attached to the oven door noting that the procedure needs to be done, how to do it properly, and to encourage people who are sensitive to such need to leave the home during the process. My personal damages was suffering a headache, preparing a meal that could not be eaten due to fumes contaminating it, and subjecting all my family including a 5 month old to fumes of which I have no idea what the chemical composition of "burning off an acrylic binding agent" is. I disagree - the tenant was cleaning out a drip tray - if the range stops working, it's not the tenants fault. If it were me, I would simply notify the landlord that the range stopped working and require him to get it fixed. I don't see how the tenant broke the range. Unless the tenant obviously damaged the range, the landlord is required to fix it. Most likely a wire came loose.

I would first unplug the stove from the power, either unplug it (If it has a plug, or turn off the circuit breaker for it).

Then remove that grease tray again, (carefully).
There may be a gas solenoid for the oven that may have had
the wire pulled off of it when You removed that tray.
(Look for any disconnected wires).

If the failure is due to the tenants actions they pay.

Landlords are not some infinite resource to repair things a tenant breaks.

If the failure is unrelated to the tenant cleaning the tray the repair IS on the landlord.

I have eaten plenty of repairs that i could have charged for over the years since determining the actual cause was not all that easy.

I have also charged for plenty of damage that could be clearly attributed solely to tenant actions.
Like the ones that plugged a sump pump ad wrecked the basement carpet.
Or let their dog destroy every screen in a screened in porch.

I did split the deductible after an oven fire.
I figured that the fire was accident enough to eat some of the cost.

brickeye - just curious - supposing a tenant ran a self-cleaning cycle on an oven and it burned out the oven. Would you blame them for breaking the oven? I'm glad I'm not a landlord!

If the tray is made to be removable for cleaning, then it hardly seems negligent to remove it for cleaning. I'd in good conscience omit that part of the story lest the landlord tries to pin it on me.
