Countertop recommendation for kids' bathroom

I am doing my girls' shared bathroom in a combination of carrara marble basketweave on the floor and white subways on the wall with a bit of marble decorative accent around the top. The tile will be all black & shades of white and grey.

My vanity can be either painted or stained. I think marble on the counter would *look* great, but marble in a girls' bathroom seems like a bad idea, right? My kids are just barely civilized (ages 4 and 7) and there is makeup, toothpaste, etc. to deal with. I *will* teach them to take good care but until the lesson is learned I don't want high risk surfaces.

Any suggestions as to what would look good with my combination and hold up to kids messes?

Photos would be great as I'm terrible at visualizing. I'm not going for a formal space so anything that sets a more casual tone would be good. The vanity will be shaker.

I'd do quartz for now, and then after they're grown you can go to marble.

I would do quartz. I have a beige Caesarstone in my girls' bath. It has stood up to green fluoride rinse, blue nail polish, and even nail polish remover. It seems pretty much bombproof. They do make a "fake" marble in Caesarstone called Misty Carrara. You might want to take a look at it, but I don't think how it would look right next to "real" carrara. They make a bright white called "Blizzard" that has a fine grain pattern (not chunky looking). There are grays as well.

Don't know if there is a best countertop as they each have pros and cons. Black granite in our master bath. It handles everything like toothpaste, makeup, oils and lotions. Wipes up easily. White laminate in the "kids" bathroom. This counter handles everything. Has lived through purple hair dying. Always has toothpaste, make up, etc. on it. Cleans up easily. If needed a little bathroom cleaner with bleach in it removes any stains. White granite in kitchen. I constantly find dried spilled coffee, dried honey, etc. on the counter. Wipes up easily. The white laminate looks the messiest as you can see everything on it. The blackish granite is better at hiding stuff. The kitchen white diamond granite is the best for hiding everything. Thanks everyone. I am stain testing the cameo white corian vs. the blizzard ceasar stone (looked at it again, and the freckles are not so bad really). I am afraid the corian will scratch and read some not so favorable reviews here, so I am leaning towards the cs. Plus it did not do so well on my fingernail polish remover test. Thanks mayland for the suggestion, but we have already installed porcelain undermount sinks. Just can't see giving my boys marble (after I type this, I am cleaning up the carpet from the sparkly red and green spin-art splatter), and granite is too much movement. Stainless steel? Well,love the look but not so much for the bathroom. Thanks so much sassyinak for such a comprehensive summary!! It really made me think of all the options.

We have (not white and gray) marble or maybe limestone in our master bath. after almost a year and a half, it does have some etching. no photos-you won't see it on photos. I see it because I look for it lol. You need to see how the light hits the surface in order to see the etching. Then I'm pretty protective over it, and watch my DH who destroys surfaces with the easiness that I'd find amazing, if I chose to be amazed. In kids' bathroom..I'd say would depend on a)kids' ages b) kids' personalities etc say my son is a very tidy boy. Naturally tidy. my daughter, on the other hand, would ruin marble anything in a day. On the other hand I had limestone countertops for years and years(other country; most people have limestone/marble) and one really gets used to patina and possible etching etc. Obviously my kids used them too. So depends also on how set you are on having something flawless as possible. BTW I agree with Joseph about Corian, we had in our previous kids bath(solid white, not marble look) and it looked very nice while being really easy to clean. And my DD had so much stuff on these countertops I didn't have in my entire life. (she grew out of it but age 14-16..gosh)

I'm currently doing a bathroom with Carrara basketweave on the floor and Misty Carrara on the counters. We initially were doing carrara subways on the walls, but as astridh said, the Misty Carrara doesn't look right next to real carrara, so we ditched the carrara subways and are doing a white crackled subway instead. Unfortunately, I have no pictures but I went to the tile store and plopped my sample of Misty Carrara on top of their countertop in the bath vignette that showed the carrara basketweave and it looked fine.

I also had a sample of Zodiac Okite Blanco Carrara with me, and I much preferred the Caesarestone Misty Carrara to the Zodiaq.

I had wanted marble for my kids bath, but the issues scared me away, not to mention I have acidic well water.

I'm doing an Italian porcelain which is as darn close to marble as I have found and putting in a vanity top of blue pearl granite. It's been described as 'bullet proof' by many different folks that I have spoken to and I need that with 3 kids.
