vanity top odd size

Hi:

We currently have an old stained laminate vanity top with one sink in an odd size 53 1/2 inches wide. The cabinet was built to fit the space between 2 walls and is too good to replace. We want to replace the top ourselves and have some experience putting a new top on a new bottom but for some reason this task seems daunting.

Since the size is odd there are no ready made options at HD or others like them. Special order forms were offered for corian $, granite $$,& quartz $$$ and we were startled by the high cost compared with pairing a top and bottom--not to mention adding the sink. (prices were from $999 to $3000 depending on options)

My question, of course, is this in the normal range for this project and/or has anyone tried online for this. I read about the granite transformations someone mentioned but the nearest place is 125 miles away so that is not an option. This is not a fancy bathroom just the hall bath but we would like it to look nice.

Do you have a granite shop anywhere near you? We had a granite top made for antique record cabinet we're using for vanity. Found gorgeous piece in granite shop's "boneyard" - had 3 edges eased, two front corners slightly beveled, sink hole cut - cost $400 for 22" 1/2 x 42" top. Sink is Kohler Serif (not expensive and i love it) with Delta Victorian faucet - two or 3 times a day i go out in my garage and admire the combo :)

Karen, thanks for the suggestion--that price seems more than reasonable and I like the idea of looking at the actual granite I'd be getting. I'm sure there must be one in this area so I'm heading in that direction. Thanks

Thanks everyone. I am going to paint all the trim and doors upstairs as well so I do plan to do it all the same color. I have 3 vanities to paint. Right now they are such a yellowed white and I hate it. I really wanted to go with a real white, but then worried that it might look funny with the creamy counters. I guess I'll go with the really white .Now if I can just find the right one. It seems that they can't mix most of these whites in a quart so I can test them because they don't have enough pigment.

Simple. Go to any cabinet retailer. Your first vanity needs a 48" cabinet, with 2 3" fillers cut to 2" in the field. I suggest a vanity with drawers to either side of a central sink compartment. 1-2K depending on what quality cabinet line you choose. The second needs either a standard 42" partial overlay door style vanity (yes, that's a standard size) or, it needs a full overlay 36" with 2 3" fillers for the sides. Measure carefully, because you won't have any way to fix this should it be slightly larger than 42". Unless you also order 1 6" filler as a just in case reserve. Again, 1-2K. Then go to a stone yard for granite. Maybe remnants. Maybe not. With 2 vanities and splashes, you may need to much stone to fit a remnant. That is also probably 1-2K, depending on your sink choices and faucets that you choose.

Regarding changing the counter -- the piggy bank is empty :-) In the last 4 months I have had to replace hardwood flooring, carpeting, doors, trim, etc throughout the house. The kitchen is not in the budget for a very long time.

You could get larger standard size and cut it down to size. That would save a lot of money.

I would go to a number of granite cutters and polishers. They always have any number of leftover pieces from processing large granite slabs.
