Help/marble vanity top thickness/backsplash

I keep thinking the decisions are over and here comes another one and they always want the answers yesterday!!

The marble man thinks we should go with a 3/4" top instead of 1 1/4" because he thinks we may not have room for the faucets(not yet chosen) with the same thickness backsplash. The thicker one just seems like it would be prettier. Has anyone ran into this? I would even consider tiling wall if I could think of something to go with white carrera--have same marble on floor in 1" hex and walnut vanity. Am using polished nickel for fixtures. Any help will be appreciated.

I prefer the thicker tops, too.
We put in soapstone, not marble, but had the option of a 3/4" backsplash with the 1-1/4" top. Do you have a sink selected yet? The sink dimensions will also need to be considered.

I am using 1 1/4" granite for my vanity top, but I am having my backsplash cut down to 3/4" to make sure I have enough room for the faucet since I had my vanity made a little narrower than the 22" standard. See if your fabricator can do that with the 1 1/4" marble. It didn't seem like a big deal, at least for granite, and the cost was minimal.

"My walls are going to be painted tongue and groove pickwick paneling (v. similar to beadboard), so I don't think I can tile to that--or can I?" You can tile on wood. But it does depend on the tile that you are using as well as the intended adhesive. Some of this is personal preference, what I mean is that if using "regular sized porcelain tile" sure, I'd not have a problem going over properly prepared wood. For glass mosaic? No. The better bet would be to mark out the area for the backsplash. Then come in a half-inch or so from that perimeter line and mark a new cut line. In that area instead of your wood paneling, insert a fill piece of cement backer board. Pad out the backer board so the face is flush with the wood paneling. Then you can do whatever you want on that space. Glass, ceramic, stone, mosaic, non-mosaic. And you can use the appropriate adhesive. With the backer board being slightly smaller than the tiled area, your top course and side column tiles will lap over the backerboard/paneling seam for a nice transition. If the edges of your intended tiles don't have a level of finish appropriate for exposure, then you could use a border or frame (wood or tile) to contain the design, just like in the photo above. I had a situation like yours. In the case where the uppers extended slightly further than did the counter top, the tile installer made the tile even with the edge of the upper cabinet and added a very narrow line (maybe 1/2", slightly rounded edge) of tile all the way to the floor on the outside of the lowers. I thought it looked great. Sorry, I have no photos. In the case where the counters were wider than uppers, he lined up the tile with the edge of the uppers and the tile went straight down to the counters, so the last 1/2", or so, had no tile above it. Because of the shape of the edge, this looked intentional.

Marble can stain and etch easily, so be sure whether you want to baby it before you decide if you want the real thing. There are plenty of porcelain tiles made to look like marble or even onyx that are available that don't have that issue. They come in large size tiles, too and will give you the seamless look. Even a backsplash can get splattered with mouthwash or shaving cream, which can etch the finish on marble. If you want to buy tile, why not look at tile stores? Why shop at Pinterest? Jump into The Tile Shop online store if you have their brick and morter store near you. It is a place to start where you can see the tile in person after looking at it online. If you don't mind buying online, there are a lot of stores that you can get a sample tile from online, then buy the tile online from them if you like it. Your third option is to get in the car and go shopping. Some tile stores cater to the designers and decorators and have very limited evening and weekend hours, so check out who carries lines you like and make sure you know when they close when you plan out your day.

My word, that is something I hadn't even thought about and we're going with 3 cm granite. Hmmm....one more decision to add to the list...Thanks for posting about this lizabeth!

Thanks for the responses.

I found out from the marble people that granite can be milled to a thinner piece for the backsplash, but marble cannot and was told I would want it from the same slab. So guess I will go with the 3/4" for both.

I have a 1 1/4" backsplash and no issues with faucet placement. How huge is your sink that 1/2" difference is a deal breaker?

my vanity is 21" deep, 69" wide with two 17"x13" oval sinks. Now you have me wondering why it is a problem. I am planning on using 8"widespread faucets that follow the curve of the sink, but haven't picked them yet, so don't know the amount of space they will take. I guess I need to do some more footwork.

It shouldn't be a problem, given your sink dimensions.

Another alternative would be using Cararra marble tiles for a backsplash, or a mosaic of Cararra and another stone.

And the "You'd want them to be from the same slab" line really translates into "We don't want to bother". For some stones, like Costa Esmaralda, then sure -- the differences between slabs can be that great, and it's a less-common stone. But for Cararra?
