I need a new router

12 years ago

I have to keep unplugging/plugging my router's power cable to keep it working.
It just stops working and has to be reset. Now the wireless has stopped
working and won't start working again.

In looking at routers, this one stuck out for me as being what I need.
I need b,g,n wireless and wired ports. I am thinking Linksys is best.(?)

What do y'all think of this router:

I'd look around some more. This one doesn't seem to have very high ratings. I really don't think brand as such matters so much. Netgear, DLink, Linksys, Belkin; they're all "brand names". Look for one that seems to have consistently good ratings from users.

I finally found the Set-Up Assistant CD for the Belkin router. I installed and it had the same name of what I named the router back when I had XP. Towards the end of installation, Belkin was trying to connect to the Internet and it couldn't, providing me with a knowledge base of questions and answers and a Belkin Support phone #. However, I noticed my Vista laptop in the other room was able to connect with a perfect signal. I called Belkin, got a man who I couldn't understand, I tried, through, but when he was wanting to start exploring my computer I declined. I called my ISP and they wanted to charge me $69 because it was a router they didn't support. In the past, whenever my computer wasn't acting right I've always rebooted. Well, I rebooted this time and now everything is working perfectly. I think I'm going to email Belkin and let them know that this may help alot of people, a simple reboot after installation.

I personally chose the G rather than the N because so many of the reviews on the N routers were horrible the reviews on the one I got were very good and the thing was a breeze to set up, the cd that came with it took care of everything. The one thing I did have to do that it did not say was to once it was all installed and finished I had to unplug my modem power and the router power and do a power up with the modem first on wait for it to fully light up and be active then plug in the router let it fully light up then power up your computers. I set mine up with WPA2 security which is the highest available now. Just make darn sure which ever you get you have a notebook and pen handy to write down all your passwords and key codes so you do not lose them, I put mine on a card and tape to the bottom of my router, if someone gets as far as in my house to steal my router they can have it lol. All of my wireless set up pretty easily and I have a full loaded bars so good wireless signal.

I just bought a new wireless router and got the linksys G the reason I did was simply due to the reviews, all the reviews for the N routers I looked at were horrible and the reviews for the instructions for setup were horrible, the reviews on the other hand for the the G were very good, I knew several people using the same G model and they all had very good reports to share. I may sometime in the future want to go with an N but for now with my set up the G is perfectly fine and my signal strength is exceptional. My original thought was go with the newest but after reading so many bad reviews I decided to go with what was solid. Which one each person chooses is up to them of course everyone has their own way of picking and choosing. As to security WPA2 is still the top choice on the N also as it is on G no change there.

It's sort of a crap shoot. If you look at "universal router sub bases" you will see myriad holes in different orientations and spacings. There is a chance that they may not even fit all Craftsman routers made in the last 10 years since Sears seems to hop around to vendor du jour and private label variously sourced items. Worst case is you'll need to reset the mounting holes (use a new sub-base as a template). The guide bushings are a bit more risky, but many of them are compatible with the somewhat de facto standard Porter-Cable diameters & thickness. Here is a link that might be useful: sub base spacing

How about this router, it has a 3.9 star rating.

I just know I don't want another Belkin.
My Belkin router has never worked consistently.
I have to reset it at least once per day, usually several times.

I have always like Linksys routers. (not using one now but.....) I Googled the model and added problems behind that to see what popped up. Nothing bad appeared but many sites gave it 4 and 5 out of five so it seems a solid router.

There are only a few makers of the chips that drive router functions so most brands share many hardware parts in common. What differs most between them is the firmware (software) inside, manufacturing QC and customer support.

It's not unusual for a new router to be DOA. Hopefully you bought it from a seller that allows free exchanges in such cases. If you do get a lemon, it'll be apparent either from an inability to get it set up or from poor performance afterward. Don't be shy about asking for another if need be and keep an eye on your calendar so that you don't miss the exchange period.

In July 2011 I bought and still happily use a Cisco branded E1200 that looks just like the Linksys pictured. Cisco owned Linksys until early 2013 when they sold Linksys to Belkin.

Anyway, guessing that they may be the same product with a different name on the hood, I think you'll be pleased with your selection. The E1200 was my first router and I was psyched for a "chore" in setting it up. Instead setup was amazingly simple and I've had no difficulty adding other wireless devices that have come to call our address home.

I bought a Linksys E1200 earlier in 2013 to replace a DLink that wasn't working properly. The E1200 has worked flawlessly, and I highly recommend.
