you should get a hood that's wider than your cooktop, so if you're getting a 36" rangetop, you should do a 42" vent/hood.

I agree with ed that oversizing is optimal; however, it is not mandatory if you simply do not have the room. I am not sure of the HP of the Capital rangetop but I think it is pretty strong. 600 CFM's would, IMO, not be adequate. A minimum of 900 s/b considered. If it has a grill, then 1200 minimum.

After looking at the specs on the Capital RT, it does state 1200 cfm, and the building inspector will definately be looking at that. So, I guess I will be spending over $1000.00, huh? I really don't want to be unadequate in that area.

ventilation isn't a 'sexy' item to spend a bunch of money on, but it's worth it in the long run.

Make sure your duct from the hood to outside is at least 8" diameter, preferably 10". Since it sounds like you need a powerful hood, you need also to have adequate ducting. The last thing you would want would be to spend all that money on a hood, and find it to be noisy and inefficent through no fault of the hood, but rather because your duct was sized too small.

I have the same rangetop with grill and definitely you will need a 1200cfm range hood. I selected the Independent brand and love it. It is a nice looking hood liner and works great. I think it cost about $1400 from kitchendirect for both the liner and the blower... they are sold separatly. They shipped immediately and I had no problem with the purchase. dixiechick, so glad to hear from someone with the exact same thing! I was looking at usappliance.com at the Independent brand yesterday. What size liner did you get? I was looking at the 40", since we don't have a tremendous amount of room in our kitchen.

Olliesmom - glad to help! I like the Independent hoods too. I believe most of the Independent models need a 10" duct, although there are a few that need 8". I couldn't use an Independent because no one gave me the advice I just gave you when I had the chance to change the ductwork when the walls were open. So I am stuck with a 6" duct, and therefore was very limited in my hood choices. Independent used to make the hoods for Wolf (Wolf would just stick their badges on them, and then mark up the price), until Wolf decided to make their own hoods last year. But Wolf initially used Independent cause they make very good quality hoods.

Bear in mind that if you go with more than 600 CFMs you may need makeup air - your inspector is likely to be more concerned about that than the number of CFMs you have. Most locales don't even require vent hoods but if you have one, makeup air becomes an issue.

I'd put in my usual plug for Modern Aire. The one advantage for me was that I could deal directly with them, not a distributor. For a very nominal fee (I think it was $165) you can totally customize the size of the hood liner. For example, I had initially spec'd a 60'' width, but when our final drawings were done it was clear I could go up to a 64'' width. Doing so cost me not a penny more as it was still within the size range for the price I was quoted (60 to 66''). They can move the location of the duct, and the electrical connections too. Others like Independent are great too but I loved the ability to call or email one contact (Jeff Herman), who knows me and exactly what I want, and has cheerfully put up with the many changes from my initial quote.

olliesmom - Sorry for not getting back.... Had grands and a medical situation. I got the 40" even though my range hood configuration is 60" due to the use of an over the door pediment I picked up at a salvage store in New Orleans...... Silly to design a $2000 cabinet around a $125 piece, but I love it.... Anyway, it is a little larger than the rangetop and I put it all the way to the front of the cabinet hood which is 24" deep. It is positioned just at the edge of the front burner. Good luck with your decision.

I have a 30" range and my hood is Thermador with a 1000 CFM external motor. I do not have any smell in my kitchen no matter what is being cooked. It does an excellent job. For your range, I will put a Thermador with a 1500 CFM external motor. Spending money on a hood is not waste; you need it to keep the house from smelling like food or a restaurant. There is no regulation on hood installation.

I had the electrical and HVAC guys in my kitchen today to prepare a quote on installing a hood fan over my proposed 36" 6-burner AG. The bad news is, for 600cfm, I not only need make-up air, it has to be heated make-up air. And besides the kitchen reno, extensive work will be necessary in my laundry room because previous development obstructs my box in a non-complying fashion.

Oh well, I still think the range/hood work will come in less $$$ than a European sports car...

In fact, in Minnesota, anything over 300 CFM requires make-up air
Now, the HVAC guys told me that since it's only 600 CFM, I would not need heated make-up air (even in MN). That's about 4 times cheaper than heated

Well, so far, all I have is the 10" duct. I guess I'm relaxing on the actual venthood for now. I am leaning towards the 40" Independant brand though. The building inspectors around here make us leave out the spec book on the range you are putting in, so they can make sure we are doing the right thing.

I will need to re-read the Capital R/T handbook, but, I am hoping I misread about the vent hood having to be 24" in width. Because the Independant VH I want is not 24" width. I have been so busy getting our house we are currently in, ready to put on the market, so haven't got to spend much time reading that part. I may have to take it up to the inspector to know for sure. They play "god" around here and you are at their mercy! LOL! I'm laughing, but that really isn't a joke!

Yup! That's where the info comes from. I'm even further north than MN, and can count on several weeks each winter when the windows will be frozen shut. The reasoning is that you don't want to risk the hood fan sucking furnace flue gases down the chimney, through the house, and up the kitchen vent. And of course, if it is that cold outside, you don't want to bring 600cfm of ambient frigid air into the living spaces of your house. Didn't even consider a grill on the DCS - my HVAC guy just rolled his eyes when I asked about 1200 cfm and said, "Please, DON'T GO THERE!"
