Bead-board bathroom - any ideas?
Comments (9)Thanks for the feedback and ideas. The varnish idea is intriguing; I think I've seen similar applications and they end up looking very shiny and not a match for the paint. This is not so terrible, but would be a bit of a different look. Are there any varnish-type products which would have a more neutral finish? Also do you think I'd need to varnish the ceiling as well to protect from condensation, or only on the walls which would be receiving direct 'splashes'? We are leaning towards keeping the tub, and retrofitting it with a shower. The idea of a hand-held European-style shower is very appealing; we're wondering if maybe a ceiling-mounted curtain ring would be sufficient to prevent splashes if the shower hardware were somehow mounted inside the curtain, maybe from a bar mounted to the ceiling? We did something similar to a clawfoot tub in our previous house - link added to show what that may look like. It would be a tricky install since the curtain ring would probably need to be mounted at the same angle as the slope of the ceiling. We would probably just leave the current tub faucet set in place and add another faucet set that operates just the shower. There's not really an economical way to create space for a separate shower, changing the footprint of the room is off-the-table for us at this point. Here is a link that might be useful: clawfoot shower system...See MoreWood Beadboard on the walls outside the shower?
Comments (18)Like someone up thread we have beadboard wainscot outside our primary bathroom. It is small, and the vent fan is not ideal with a few kinks along the run. We get a little mildew on our ceiling every couple of years, our tiles get a little mildewy if I don't keep up on the tilex. With that said, our beadboard that we painted with a gloss exterior paint looks just fine! No mildew, no rot. We even had an area where it swelled a little bit before we had the shower glass door up, and that has stayed fine since it stopped getting pelted with water. We didn't use any fancy product, it was the ready to assemble strips from menards. they were some kind of engineered material, but not anything special water resistant composite....See MoreBeadboard w/ chair rail in daughters bedroom - wall paper entire wall?
Comments (10)We're doing wainscoting up about 5' on 8' walls. (This is to protect the walls. My kids are special needs and lets just say there have been previous incidents.) Wallpaper is going above the wainscoting. I had the same wallpaper in my bedroom from age 5 until I was... 19? At which point I pulled it down with the intent of painting, discovered that Dad had used paste on prepasted vinyl paper and that there was so MUCH paste that it was going to be a major issue to wash it off thoroughly for paint. I ended up hanging a different paper instead. Upside, a 19 year old learned how to hang wallpaper. :-) Useful life skill for someone who still likes wallpaper. And I, for one, like wallpaper and wainscoting together. DO give careful thought to the height of the wainscoting or beadboard. Usually either 1/3 the height of the wall or 2/3 the height of the wall look better than 1/2. So, if it were me, I'd to the beadboard all the way around and wallpaper above it....See Morewhole house is bead board ! bead board adventures!
