ran malwarebytes anti malware and have another question

I ran malwarebytes and it came back with 1 threat and I don't have a clue what to do--under vendor heading it said HIJACK DISPLAY PROPE under Category it said REGISTRY DATA and under items it said HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE/MICRO then under other it said Bad 1 Good 0 and no action taken--is this something that should be removed?

Norton found a tracking cookie and I clicked fix and thought it was ok-then I ran superantispyware and receive a notice that it had found 1 adware tracking cookie-I take it that it's ok to remove any kind of cookie?

forgive me but one more question-is Norton a good security investment-I like that it fixes things and am willing to pay for it if it does a good job-this is a new computer that I'm going to have to use a long time so I want to take good care of it.

these are the directions we give for malwarebytes at download
# Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
# At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
# If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
# Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
# When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
# Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
# When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

did you do the step that says be sure everything is checked and click REMOVE selected?

I personally would never have Norton on one of my computers again been there done that and fought to get all their stuff off my pc and that was quite a challenge.

I use Avast free for my antivirus and like it, if I were to pay for one it would be ESET Nod32 which is highly ranked.

Always be sure to update malwarebytes prior to running the scans and I run the full scan weekly.

I'll download avast now and then try to get rid of Norton. thanks for your help

Raven - I will - I'll go back and report and see what else they think I should do. Thank you. Damccoy - I wish I knew but I'm 99% sure it's not an email - I'm super careful and don't open anything I don't recognize. But I'm leary of StumbleUpon, even though I like it. It just takes one creep to 'get you' and it's just too much roaming around the net. Also, I use FB and like it but again, unless you're pretty sure of your 'friends' you can get caught in that web. One thing I wondered about though besides the above~ I still can't open my Windows Mail and haven't given up on finding the original password, but that aside. Someone said why not just use FF so I was trying to update my bookmarks (favorites) and under a couple of folders were extensive sites - i.e. plants, orchids, politics, etc. Some were no longer there and opened instead on a different site or page. Though I didn't explore, you didn't know until you opened it that it wasn't what you thought you had saved. Hope that makes sense. That could have been an entry for a virus. If I find out anything else, I'll report back - count on it. Thanks Also, I've installed (again, they disappeared) Spybot-Search & Destroy & Malwarebytes Anti-Malware & still have CCleaner - what else should I have? I believe Windows Defender is on too. Anything else? I forgot what HijackThis is for - can someone tell me and if I need it or anything else? Really spooked now.....

Microsoft Security Essentials has a setting in the rear that helps somewhat for faster scans.. I set mine to limit use to 100% of cpu ... default, if I recall right, was 30%. MSE no matter what the cpu % is set .. seems to always give other programs 1st priority, and sits & waits for the cpu to be unbusy for its little fun fast time slices. Thats probably why it seems to take so long to finish an update or scan. The newer version seems to update fractionally much smaller definition downloads. Which is nice when you push a manual scan!

I do not know what is going on but you appear to have a windows installer problem, this problem usually occurs during the installation of the printer, please take a look at the link provided but don't do anything yet. Do you have the disk that came with the printer? When did you install the printer? What appears to be going on is when you reboot the (windows installer) is trying to install the printer or something and it's asking for the disk -- I have no clue why. If you have the disk What we could do is to reinstall the printer software from disk. you got hit with a misdirect for the dreaded antivirusxp infection. Many many sites even legit sites have been having these misdirections occurring, the best thing you can do is not click anything but just close the browser out, if you click on any part of it that begins the install, it sounds like your WOT saved you. But I would definitely run malwarebytes and superantispyware daily for a few days (update them of course) and do a separate online virus scan also. Online Virus Scan you must run it with IE. are you still seeing anything strange or any warnings from down by the clock? remember do not click on any part of it, if you have to shut down the pc instead do that.

you should go to the Norton site and get their free removal tool you can get one for the version of Norton that you have it is pretty much necessary to be able to get all of Norton off of your pc.

I too also thought we needed a special tool for the correct version of NORTON but it doesn't matter,
