Question about Xbox 360 and Computer

My son has a question. He wants to do something that I don't understand how to present to the forum. I had to ask him to do it. His father is concerned about viruses.

Here goes (from my son):

This is for Xbox live..... anyhoo, i want to switch my NAT settings to open but it is on moderate currently. I asked my dad to put the NAT to open but he thinks viruses can come inside over the file transfer. The file transfer is only from our computer to the xbox(not from someone else's computer). I cant search anything from the xbox but, i can download music, gamer pictures, themes, demos, etc. This is supplied from Microsoft and if they had viruses Microsoft would get so many complaints b/c people dont want to download viruses and nobody would get the system. Back to the point, if we switch the NAT settings to open would our computer still be protected from viruses and trojans and stuff to that extent??

I dont know what an xbox is. Probably doesnt matter that I dont.

NAT very effectively seperates your personal computers on your private network from the open public www network. Not just microsoft.
If you disable NAT then you get a real www IP at your main computer and the whole world can access it or attempt to anyhow - most isp's will only assign one ip per customer without extra charges, that's why, I assume, youre talking about NAT to begin with, means you most likely have a router.
- charges for extra IP numbers can get rather steep for a home internet account. Some isp's require you to have a business internet account for multiple IP's.

You can look in your modem/router at firewall rules and you can do anything you want with NAT still enabled. Most probably the manufacturer of the Router? will have instructions on configuring it specifically for xbox if you visit their website support pages.

Can you do this while unplugged from the internet?

XBOX 's are built for computer transfers.

Can you transfer a virus from the XBOX to the PC?

I don't think so. That's not a very good answer is it?

XBOX 360 can be hacked. The likely-hood of your son having a hacked XBOX without knowing this is slim to none. This is something that XBOX owners try to do. Cracking the XBOX 360 is analogous to cracking a game ...which is playing without paying.

As far as Microsoft not getting viruses!? Microsoft is the king of viruses. That is their big numero uno problem and why we have a hundred or so updates in our Control Panel.
Every patch and most updates represent a vulnerability exposed by hackers. Microsoft's track record is the worst in the industry.

If you downloaded and saved to a disk what you wanted from the Microsoft sites and then did a data file transfer offline?

You are going to need a gaming site to answer this question honestly. What your son wants to do is normal for the XBOX. This is not out of the ordinary at all. How risky is it? How risky is it when you turn your computer on...always very.

Until I got my security up and running on my new hard drive...I was shocked at the amount of popups I got on my desktop!!! I wasn't even on the darn internet. But with the background process for IE always running for Windows you are accessible at startup.

You are really going to need a game site. Your son might be right. XBOX360 and the computer are meant to go hand in hand and really hand in hand when Vista arrives. Computers will be able to challenge XBOXERs online with VISTA...yep we will abe able to play each other if we got the cash.

Then on the other hand logistically it is scarry. You don't want to be vulnerable at any time your are hooked up to the internet.

Try the "Forumz" at Tom's Hardware (which is a high tech computer site). If they don't know, no one knows. They have an XBOX section. I game at a minimum. Too minimum to answer this question.

Just curious does the hotel tell you that when you check in? We mostly stay at red roof a lot and I watch Netflix on my tablet or laptop all the time at their hotel with wifi and other hotels and never ran across that situation. Netflix is streaming only so you can't download from them to watch off line. Someone else will help you with downloading as I stream all my movies while traveling and staying in hotels. Mary

If you have a multi-user subscription, you should be able to load it onto other computers at any time during the period of the subscription, and the clock starts ticking when you load the first one on. I have a 3-user subscription to Norton anti-virus and I loaded one right away, and another 6 months later. However, I have the disc. Since you downloaded yours, did you save the program on the first computer? If so, you could make a copy on a flash drive, and plug that into your netbook and install it. If you don't have that option, you should go go the Symantec web site. When you put the program on the first computer, there is typically a registration step that establishes an account at Symantec. Each time the program is installed and registered, the registration process takes you to the web site and the number of program installs is kept track of in your account. If you log into this account right now, it should show that you have two installs left of what you bought. If you don't have the program, and/or you can't remember how to get into your account (or can't retrieve the info), call Symantec tech support and explain the problem and they should be able to walk you through this. It would probably be helpful if you had your online receipt of the purchase handy when you do this.

Thank you all for your help. I figured some things out last night before I upgraded to Win 8.1 - that download took hours to complete To get the verification code I needed to sign into my Sympatico account and I could not do it using my iPod. I had the right password and user name but I could not log on. I called Bell this morning at 7 am and was on the phone with them for more than 2 hours. They couldn't figure out what was wrong with my email because they had a hard time signing in too. After 2 hours they reset my password to the same one and after I hung up I still could not access my email. I finally had to call a friend to log in and get the Windows verification code for me so I could complete the installation. I switched to IE instead of using Mozilla. My laptop was always dimming after 5 minutes so I found the way to reset that. I will get rid of the trial McAfee. I will also download Malewarebytes and CC Cleaner which I used on my other laptop. haha I think I will buy that Dummies book for Windows One other question I use a wireless mouse to play FB games but I am finding it lagging, is there any way I can speed it up to move quicker. Also I have a WIFI Pixma Cannon Printer, this computer does not have CD reader so I can't download the dsiks. I should be able to still use the printer by plugging the printer into my USB port? Hey Sandy...did not mean to overlook you. Its getting near quitting time, but - while having huge difficulty with the desktop (an AT&T support tool set-up request screwed up the first attempt) the flash player said something on the order of 'Helps secure router something or other signals'. "Helps" isn't quite enough...so the Windows Firewall Advanced 1394 coverage is remaining checked along with the other checked boxes on that menu. I don't know if I made a mistake or not, but watching grass grow would be faster than the 'backup files' feature. The transfer for 1GB of files has been almost 2 hours. I selected the 'turn off computer upon completion' button and am heading for home. Tomorrow I will ask about another subject...my boss got a bill from an internet provider for dial-up service that she doesn't have...the company has a site ...but I'm not sure what to do. I don't know if its legitimate and/or if responding will only make things worse. No one around here has ever heard of this company. marf

If you want to connect the PC and Xbox 360 all you need is the latest Windows Media Player or Media Connect.

On the PC, you choose which folders you what the Xbox 360 to access and choose which devices on the network can see the files.
