Doorknobs, tell me if I've lost my mind...
Comments (31)Just this morning I spent what I consider a small fortune on doorknobs. I blame my DH though (who will probably have a seizure when he finds out how much they cost), as I was more than happy with the less expensive Emtek rectangular handleset, whereas he preferred the Baldwin Boulder Rustic w/interior egg knobs. Of course, we also wanted the more expensive distressed ORB finish. The mortise lock upgrade for our front entry doors was pricey, but recommended since our doors are so large. And of course, I wanted matching egg knob handlesets with a rosette backplate for all of my interior doors, so I didn't want to switch to a less expensive brand for these doors - again bumping up my total cost. With a 10% discount for ordering from the manufacturer rather than taking them from the shelf, my total price from a local dealer came to approximately $1700, including tax. This was the lowest price I could find after receiving several quotes from different online sites (although my local dealer also offers his products online). I saved some money by choosing to pick up my order rather than have it shipped. These are my choices (except with the knob rather than the lever) - I can't wait to get them!...See MoreWhich Door Hardware: Baldwin or Emtek
Comments (27)Maureen- The idea that name brand manufacturers provide a second line of crappy products that look look identical to their regular products to sell in big box stores -- whether it's faucets or hardware or whatever -- is an urban myth. No name brand manufacturers are going to do this and damage their reputations. If your Baldwin handles fell apart, they could have been a not very well-made product, they could have been installed sloppily, or they could have gotten abused in use. Whatever it was, it wasn't that you got an inferior, second rate version of an identical item from a big box store. Traditional brick and mortar stores perpetuate this idea to often justify their higher prices for the same item. They may even believe it, but it’s not true. Whatever you paid the locksmith for your Emtek hardware, you should check out the price online, like at Amazon. Fifteen years ago I added Emtek deadbolts to my outside doors to supplement the standard Emtek key-in-knob handles. I had my choice of spending a certain amount for the dead bolts locally, or half the price online. Guess what I did? And 15 years later they are still in perfect functioning condition....See MoreAnyone have Lever Style Doorknobs in your Interior Doors
Comments (36)I had the upstairs knobs changed to levers a couple weeks ago and I love them! Changed the hinges to match (orb). I think they make the entire second floor hallway (surrounded by 5 doors) look so much better, and they are easy to use...no problems. Laschnit, I had Kwikset levers installed that I purchased at HD. I think they look and feel super, and my handyman said they were easy-peasy to install. They are still fairly pricey, (though I know not close to Baldwin's prices)as the bill adds up when you go from door to door! So worth it, though. I'll change out the downstairs after I re-do the powder room and paint a couple of doors. HD had Baldwin on display, but I didn't think they looked any better than the ones I bought. I couldn't justify the cost differential. In fact, I liked the way the Kwikset looked more than the orb Baldwin options....See MoreEgg knob vs. Round knob?
Comments (9)It's more about what feels easier to manipulate in your hand than the visual look. You might think it's "just" a doorknob--I did. But even tho I thought the round knobs were cool and modern-looking, and the eggs less modern, those round ones were too slippery. Also think ahead 10 or more years: For some people, hand strength wanes. Also, I don't know which manufacturer you're looking at, but the visual of the egg-shaped doorknobs does tend to morph into a flatter look if there's a "rose cover" -- the part that goes flush against the door itself -- that's fully round. So again, that's where the value of "looks" is diminished. From a distance, you don't see "egg," you see "round." I'll post a photo to show you what I mean. (Some manufacturers are different; I didn't buy this brand, I bought Baldwin, in a different finish, but the visual is the same.)
