knobs or pulls on cabinets - function vs. look
Comments (21)Ours is a working kitchen, so looks are important but function is more important. Think eye-hand coordination--what does it feel like to reach for the knob/pull and how difficult is it to aim and land on the item without thinking very much? [for me this rules out the catches that are little locks] How far does the finger area stand proud of the cabinet? [1 inch is probably insufficient.] Can it be used with other parts of the hand or are the fingertips essential to using it? Is a grip required? [hard for arthritic fingers] Will it push the fingers and hand back onto the cabinet or is there sufficient clearance so cab is not touched? Would a ring on a finger scrape the cab? If someone uses it with a glob of egg yolk or frosting on the fingers and this dries on the knob/pull, how hard will it be to clean it? [Extra points for knobs that are flat at back that can be opened with the side of a hand if fingers are messy (see posting above) or can be opened with fingers in V pattern.] Does your body need to be directly in front of knob/pull or can you pull strategically from the side? [This is a problem with many bin pulls and is reason I have decided against them. I hope that I can hook a finger into one of two hoop pulls and guide a drawer open even when standing caddywompus to drawer.] Knowing that I used to wash a 3-4 inch circle around the small ceramic knobs on my old cabs in order to remove the accumulating grime, I am hoping to keep my cabs cleaner by using open 5 inch pulls that rise 1.25 out from the cab. Wonder if it will work. Out of nostalgia, just want to post one of the pulls I once lusted after:...See MoreKnobs round and square
Comments (5)I have egg-shaped knobs that I really like, but they do get out of alignment sometimes and that bugs me. I keep a screwdriver handy to tighten them up. (It doesn't bug me enough to swap them out, though.) I think you should get what you like. It's easy enough to change out the knobs, but if you're buying alot of them the cost does start to add up, so make sure you get what you like. One question on the square knobs - will any of those be on lowers? Just asking because my friend had some really cool square knobs all over, but on the lowers they would scratch your legs if you weren't careful. (They were contemporary and so angular they were almost sharp.)...See Morewhere to use knobs vs handles--pix requested
Comments (7)In trying to keep it mimimals we went with only pulls, vertical on doors and horizontal on drawers and pull outs (this may be a good way to determine where to place the pulls and knobs as buehl has done). Mix of knobs and pulls can be a great look. This cabinetry product comes with the split top drawers and while my Mom initially thought she would do two handles on her 30" pot drawers she opted for just one in the end (a vignette with just a knob on 30" drawers tipped the scale). She also opted to place the pulls on the deep drawers at the same distance from the top as on the shallow drawers. For symmetry she had the handle on the recycling pull out placed at the same height as the ones on the adjacent drawers. With the reduced rails on the drawers of this product the pulls would not have looked right installed on them. On her 4 drawer bank....See MoreDecent Quality Privacy Knobs, how much? Comments (10)Oh- I just checked my order and two mistakes on my original post- I did get the vintage bronze, good thing you asked! They look dark just like the ORB to me, I don't remember why I chose the vintage bronze since I did not know the information that you just posted. They've been installed for a year (not two) and I have not noticed any difference. I can try to get a picture tomorrow at home if you'd like. They look the same color to me as the ORB hinges that I used. BTW I really like the egg shaped knobs- besides being cute and different, they are so much easier to open than the round ones, without the "catching clothes" and "dog opening doors" problems of levers. I appreciate that DDH has all the needed specs on the knobs listed in a nice diagram. Make sure you measure your backset and bore. Our original crossbore was only 3/4 inch and this knob (and pretty much all other knobs now) needs an inch so it had to be enlarged. There is a door knob drilling kit from HD/lowes that you might need that includes the drill bit to enlarge the crossbore (you need 2 people, one to hold the door and one to drill). I also bought this knob because the faceplate was removable and I did not have a routed location for the faceplace on my door. Once the crossbore is the right size the installation is trivial. PS I learned all this information by first buying the knobs at HD without research and realizing all the reasons why they would not work. HTH...See Moretomatotomata
