I am more than a little confused, everything I see refers to an onboard video card. Give us the make and model of the motherboard please. You can use the link Zep provided to see what you have on the computer (or your bills for the parts when purchased) In your previous post on this subject you said you had 1920mb of RAM, that suggests to me that your current video card is embedded on the motherboard. If this is so you will need to go into the BIOS and disable the onboard video card once you have inserted the new card so the new card will be recognised. Is this a retail box or OEM? If OEM then download the drivers from the makers site if needed first, if retail you have a CD so no worries. This is not a difficult task. Shut down and remove the power cable from the rear of the tower. (Do not just use the switch on the power supply on the back as this does not completely shut things down, note the LED light on the motherboard continues to glow.) Be sure to keep a bare arm or hand on the metal casing at all times while in there to dissipate any static electricity from your body that might harm the delicate parts Insert the card and screw the plate to the back panel of the case, you cannot make a mistake because the slots are different. Connect the power cord and boot the computer hitting probably the Delete key during the initial startup to access the BIOS. Once in the BIOS you can use the left and right arrows to move from window to window. Once you find the page with the video use the down arrow until you reach the video settings. Read the instructions on the right side for how to change a setting on your specific BIOS as different makers use different methods. Make the change then press F10 to save and exit, agree when asked. During startup the computer will pop up a message saying it has found new hardware and will ask for instructions. If this was a retail box purchase place the CD in the drawer and follow along. Perhaps the update and the concern are unrelated. However, a prudent person could conclude they are. Since this is a post-update concern have you thought about removing the focus update if you can? If you can get in Safe Mode, open Windows Update and then its history. The information for uninstalling an update will be available there. Not all updates can be removed. Not focusing on Amity, but for the benefit of those reading the thread, this is an example of why users are alerted against updating audio and video drivers when the system is operating properly without the update. In other words, please consider leaving well enough alone. Make note of what's available, what the change log is, and where it is located. Also, often hardware manufacturer drivers released through Microsoft are already obsolete due to lag time. If something needs to be updated a visit to the manufacturer's website first is advisable. Nope, don't have to press the start button. Just plug it in. We were thinking it might be a problem with the start button. The computer has sat for a while. But I think it was because of the problems it is having now. To my knowledge, I'm the only one to have been in the case. I checked all the cable connections. Everything is tight. There is a strange problem with the video signal. With the monitor cable unplugged, if I turn the monitor on, I get a message on the screen saying "No Signal." But if I plug the monitor into the computer and turn it all on, I just get a black screen. I mite try a different video card. I'll fiddle with it some more this evening. Pooh Bear

Making blanket suggestions for others is an almost impossible task. The name brand computers all seem to do a good job these days and they offer upgrades too for reasonable prices. A is factor here is that these computers come with a load of software including the operating system. Yes, some stuff is useless but the computer comes ready for action except for an anti virus program. However if you want something more then building or having someone build might be the way to go. Having a computer built is risky because if you fail to identify the make and brand of any component then that part will no doubt be the weakest link in your new machine, went that route once many years ago. The most difficult task when building yourself is parts selection and compatibility. Assembly is much like Lego only with more expensive parts that make a first time builder nervous. As you expressly mention video cards, they have come a long way. My new build running Windows 7 pre-release has a Sapphire Radeon 4870 with 1 gig of DDR5 onboard. But a card of that nature needs 2 - 4 pin power connectors and a minimum of 500 watt power supply. This card has 2 DVI connectors too. The downside of course is the US$150 price tag. The upside was Canadian$705 for 4gigs of RAM, Gigabyte motherboard, the video card, AMD Phenom II x3 processor and 700watt power supply. I used an old case to save about $50. So adding the Can$140 for Windows 7 I have a good computer for $850. This assumes your old monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers and webcam are good enough to move over to the new machine. As this is a business computer and I think tax laws are similar in the US to Canada you should consider buying before year end. Write off is 30% annually but in Canada the first year or part therof is less write off so the smaller amount of the year left, the smaller the penalty as it were.
