Hi there, I hope someone can help

We have a second computer (second hand) now that my son was supposed to order a router for. He spoke to lynksys, telling them he wanted a router that would connect both his x-box game and the other computer to our main computer. The item they told him to order was the dual band wireless-N gaming adaptor. It came today and it doesn't seem to be the right thing. Is there a product that connects both of these items, the game and the other computer all in one? Or do we need two different routers? We already have a game router, the 2.4GHz wireless G router for broadband. Thanks for any help. Please don't get too technical in any reponses. I need it in small doses ;)

What's the model number of what they sent you.. better yet a link to their page.

Usually... Wireless gaming adapter should be able to hook the xbox to your existing router. You can also use them on pc's for wireless connectivity.
Sounds like you need a wifi adapter for the computer or a chunk of ethernet cable to hook it up to your existing router.

Well you should have a main router in the house already with a wireless signal present that would be your wireless "G' Router, now connect the Xbox to the adapter that you just got and it will or should pick up the signal from your wireless "G router. My adapter is a little box with an antenna on it

Should work perfectly fine if the router broadcasts a WiFi signal (and you know the SSID/network name and password) ... otherwise you'd have to hard-wire the iPad to it. If this is a new router it may need to go through some sort of set-up routine which may require a temporary hard-wired connection with a computer. Ideally you should change the wireless network name and password from whatever is the initial default to something more secure.

I have a free Spectrum modem too, at a second house. Because it was free, I paid no attention to the brand but I'm happy to accept your saying it's an Arris. You can be sure that any business that buys a product in large volumes, the tens and hundreds of thousands in this case, gets bids from more than one provider and everything else being equal, is heavily swayed in such decisions by price. I would come to no quality or performance conclusion about Arris simply because Spectrum provides them. It only means they were the lowest or one of the lower bidders. I have no investment in the one I use for Spectrum either financially or emotionally, if it starts to act erratically, I'll replace it. My assessment of Arris is based on the performance of a 3 year old unit in my primary home that worked poorly that I was more than happy to replace and whose replacement (a well rated Netgear model) has significantly better performance. No matter what, there's really no such thing as any tech company consistently being considered "one of the best in the business" across multiple product lines. Some are always better than others and lemons can be found from all of them. PS - Orbi and other so-called "mesh" system have their place but are overkill in many situations. I recently bought a new router for the smaller second home I have which, at a price 70% cheaper than what I paid for one Orbi (and I have two, counting the satellite) is perfectly adequate. That was why I asked chisue to describe the physical layout she wants to cover.

Although you may need to be sure the router is broadcasting both 2.4 and 5.0 signals, connecting any device to a wifi signal is a function of the device (DVR for the cameras), not the router. Some devices are not dual band and you need to make sure whatever band it's looking for is being broadcast. I have several such things, older equipment that's 2.4 only. Can you connect it via an ethernet cable directly to the router? I have several such devices like that too, ethernet capable but without wifi ability. Or, you can get something like an IOGear ethernet to wifi adaptor. You adjust the wifi settings on the little IOGear device, then plug in an ethernet cable from it to the device needing a "network" connection. The IOGear device handles that in lieu of using the device's internal capability (which may or may not be working). I have several of them for different devices - one, for an old network music player that's both Ethernet and wifi capable, but the wifi died and it's not near an Ethernet connection. Another, for a cell phone range extender that's Ethernet capable only but that I want to put in a more central location than where the router is. The IOGear device connects via wifi and supplies the signal down a wire to the ethernet-only range extender, which has no idea how it got the signal but it doesn't matter.

If each of the Nighthawk's 4 Lan sockets will enable your VOIP system, and if the same cord doesn't activate a connection for the PC, I would suspect the PC to be the problem. Two possible solutions, the second only if the first doesn't work #1, go to Settings, Network and Internet, Ethernet, Change Adapter Options, Right Click on the Ethernet adapter icon and make sure it's enabled. If it IS enabled, your option after right clicking will be to Disable. If it's enabled and it doesn't connect, move on to #2. #2 - if it is enabled but won't automatically make the connection, you should consider buying a USB Wifi adaptor. Don't go for the cheapest ones but for $20-$30, you'll have a little device that mostly installs itself and will work well. I bought this one when I decided to press into service in a distant location an older PC I'd stopped using. It doesn't have a built in Wifi capability. With this little device that I have plugged in at the back so it's really not visible, it connects at the same max speed that much newer devices can connect at, on both wifi bands. USB Wifi adapter

So I should hook this new gaming adaptor to my second computer? And that will work to make the second computer pick up the internet connection?

Or do we need to send back this gaming adaptor and get a wi-fi adaptor made for the computer. The x-box was already working with the wireless-G router we have.

Might be a toss up in cost to send it back and get a replacement after you pay shipping costs.

Ideally I'd want a wireless adapter that matched the router so you can take full advantage of your routers features ...and probably the gaming adapter they sent does the features. Only problems is its a bit more complicated to initially configure, and you have an extra power cord and network cable to deal with, and its probably going to be always on so it sucks about 7 watts of power constantly - thats about eight bucks a year on the power bill that you dont need.

Sorry if I seem obtuse, I just want to make sure I understand what you are telling me.

So the answer to my question;

is yes?

But it is complicated to configure? Where would I go for help with that? I guess linksys support? I've had two encounters with them the first one was horrible the second one was great.

It really should be no problem for someone with a bit of network savy to hook up... what I dont know is if the user manual or quick install guide makes it simple for you?

You would configure the game adapters wireless ssid and security key, maybe a few other settings to get it talking with the router. %hen if not already in a bridging mode, that's the mode you will want. IP from your router then goes to your computer nic. ... Then you need to configure networking on the computer, thats about it.
