How do you decorate your smaller home?
Comments (65)Sunrochy - I don't really know anything about Morganton, but on the map it doesn't look too far from Asheville. I just LOVE North Carolina! The only problem is we can't move there full time for several years because hubby wants to stay at his job here in Fla. to build up his pension. So I get to go up to my little Asheville pad for a month or two at a time and we come up together for long weekends, etc. It has been sooo much fun to be remodeling this little house - it's so easy to do when you have a small space to do over. I think I spent less on the whole remodel than some folks in the kitchen forums spend on their cabinets! When I get back up there and finish the remodel I will post some before and afters. This was just a bland little prefab house that was built in the 70's, no personality at all, and a lot of funky old carpets and chopped up rooms. We opened it all up, put hardwood floors and sparkly chandeliers, and painted bright colors (different for each room) and it's like a new house. I think I will name it "Birdsong Cottage" because each morning there are hundreds of birds singing around there. Can you tell I love it - hehehe...See MoreSmaller Master Bath/Closet
Comments (6)Hey CP (hope your project is moving along). The master bedroom I have designed is 11' 6" on that wall that I am willing to shrink, and 12' on the other dimension. It's a cozy size, fits a queen bed, two night stands, 8' waist high dresser and that's about it....which is all I need in there. I expanded the bathroom wall and the 10'6" works in the bedroom, as it's just walkway between the foot of the bed. Leaves about 3' to 3.5' of walking room. Whereas not shrinking the room gives a gracious 4 to 4.5' of walking room, which if I had that room I'd just put more storage there....See MoreHow much closet do you need?
Comments (38)aprilneverends- I can so sympathize with you. When my mom decided to move to NM three years ago, I worked like crazy to get just the right furniture and accessories for the small 1BR condo we had found for her after much searching. DH and I both wanted her to feel comfortable from the get-go and very “New Mexico-y”. It was adorable. But I had forgotten that my mom was never much for decor, design, or cleanliness for that matter. I had forgotten that she never makes her bed, so the “look” I had put together with comforter, blanket, pillows . . . was wasted. I had forgotten that she runs life from a ”Cockpit” of sorts, meaning a chair that has multiple ottomans, plastic tables from Amazon and overturned boxes from Amazon masquerading as tables, all around it. All seating surfaces covered with throws that are covered with cat hair. All table/box surfaces covered with paper and this and that and coffee cups and . . . Regarding one rug-type cube ottoman: “Take that out, it’s hard to move around.” (sigh). She’d order something against my recommendation, then when it arrived, say “You’re so good with decorating. Where should I hang this 3’ x 5’ painting of a zebra?” I would tell her I would be glad to hang it for her, but she needs to tell me where she wants it, as I couldn’t really speak to a good place for it. And then a couple months of sniping and hard feelings would follow. Lather, rinse, repeat. Zebrad infinitum. My solution? I haven’t been inside her new apartment (independent living apartment) since we took out the last moving box. In October. But I digress. __________________ We each have about eight feet of hanging space and a built-in dresser. DH’s shoes are in his closet. Mine are in bins in a built-in cabinet in the bedroom. Other than that there is just the coat closet (where DH has way, way too many coats and jackets). We do try to get rid of something every time we bring in something new. We’ve always had older homes, and have never had a walk-in closet. We’ll go to open houses and builder parades and stare in wonder at some of the huge closets. I’m sure when we eventually build our retirement home, it will have a walk-in closet. But it should remain quite sparse, as I hope to have only seven outfits by then. One for each day of the week....See MoreHow do you organize your hanging tops in your closet?
Comments (23)Sleeve length and TYPE. My closet is a sea of black. Cashmere is folded, and the few colors, easy to see. All silk shirts together......easy to see as well. Winter gets cleaned ans stored free ( paid up front ) at the dry cleaners, summer goes to crates in the late fall, and remains until spring. Easy peasy. If I'm not wearing it, I don't want it HANGING around, unless it is totally seasonless. Bottoms are easy, they're blinding white or they are black, Yeah............you guessed it. One is in, the other is OUT. Variety is nice, but most have far too much of it. Much like design.......it doesn't take that much variety to look good all the time. Nobody remembers what you had on, two weeks ago. Not even you. A friend and I had a joking laugh about Manhattan.... the streets a literal sea of black. " Ever wonder who wears all the colors in the STORES?? ................tourists?!" Alas......... this climate goes winter summer, summer winter in a blink. So its darn easy to switch....See Morebrickeyee
