Lipstick on a pig

haha! I was just thinking about what it must be like to be able to decorate a home as beautiful as Jane's... then I thought about what I have to work with. It's a little like putting lipstick on a pig. :O)

Busy day, busy week. WISH I could weave and do fun crafty/artistic stuff, but just don't have the time.

I think it would be wonderful to decorate a house as beautiful as Jane's . But I think any house can look festive especially if you enjoy doing it.

I think Nana is right - You and turn any house into
a nice 'home'...if you 'love' and enjoy doing it.
You know when DH and I first started out, we bought
a 'Handy Man's Special'...just what we were looking for
on our very tight budget. Everyone thought we were
crazy...we actually had to wash the walls before we could
paint them. But, we saw good bones thru it all...and worked on it for over 20 yrs...loving every minute..
As time went by...friends and family would enjoy seeing the changes we made (all done by us - do to lack of $)...
To this day, that little house is my favorite!

I would go with a classic white subway tile. It will never go out of style and always look classy. As for the cabinets, although I do like white kitchens I'm starting to see lots of beautiful kitchens with medium stain cabinets like yours. Have you seen the kitchen by Minnesota designer Todd Hansen in the Jan/Feb 210 Better Homes and Gardens magazine "Kitchen and Bath Ideas"? It is my current dream kitchen. It has white/cream cabinets for uppers and a light/medium wood (similar to your oak) on the bottoms. A few ideas: 1.) leave the bottom cabinets as is but paint the upper cabinets a white/cream color 2.) don't paint any cabinets but put a few glass panel/glass doors on your uppers. Either solution will solve the problem that you don't like all the graining on the oak cabinets. Most people in your kitchen looking at the cabinets are going to notice the uppers more than the lower cabinets. If you change out the uppers you will create the look you want. No matter what, I agree with the other posters that you should wait and see how you feel when your island is painted and your new counters are installed. Be sure to show us the pictures. It is going to look great. You have a very nice space to work with.

Stinky - Ha, I know! I see you noticed I purposely made sure to add that they were fine. I was hoping nobody here would accuse me of being cruel. I'll admit the one you're seeing in the photos acted like it was torture staying in there because he's nosey. Kept pawing at the door. He's always my helper with any project. See. Here's just a few shots. Helping paint painting crown... Being impatient with me to hang a picture... Helping with the stairs... He's just being cute in this one so I had to post it. Bronwyn - Ohhhhhh... Feeling silly. Can you tell I'm not much of a chef? :) Green - LOL! "Bye hunny see you in a month." Then pack your bags and head for the neighbors. :)

To me, lipstick on a pig is doing something cosmetic on something that is flawed and trying to camouflage the flaws. Making a silk purse out of a sows ear would be renovating a kitchen that had a bad layout , not correcting that, but doing something expensive with lots of bells and whistles. Some might call the above kichen lipstick on a pig if they considered the layout a flaw but the changes aren't really trying to conceal anything like bad cabinets. I would call it a modest update .

Taking care of the flooring issues will be a significant cost of a remodel. Old wood should be replaced with something of a similar age and grain pattern and likely will have come from a demo project in the vicinity. Be prepared for a very high price per square foot but it should still be cheaper than total replacement. The pieces missing quite large chunks can be cut out to a rectangular shape and have a replacement piece filled in. Your average floor guy isn't the answer here, you need someone who really loves restoring old floors. Talk to locals who are in old house preservation groups and ask for suggestions. Keep researching and the same one or two names will surface, likely from different sources. Whoever is in the business of old house restoration will have sources for the materials. I have my own stash of reclaimed oak and maple flooring and trim boards for future jobs.

Jane, I have a 'handyman special'.... My dad told me not to touch it with a 10 foot pole when he looked at it with me. LOL! In the end he was glad I got it because it did 'fix up' pretty decently. Let's just say it's NOT my dream house. I joke that if two people are in the kitchen at the same time, one has to leave so that the other can turn around.

Just a little levity on an otherwise dreary day. :)

Love it! That's a pretty cute pig w/lipstick all right. What a fun crazy bunch here!!! Sure hope you didn't sell our 'Holiday Bus' with the home Jane. I'm willing to store it if need for the time being. Or is it to late?LOL
