New house; front-facing shake roof.....

I would discuss with contractor/roofer first with intention of having them finish the job leaving a perfect match. Would surprise me if the HVAC folks would do any more than what they have to so that their own stuff works. Thinking maybe unreasonable expectation. All depends on the people -- but would be hard for homeowner to evaluate up-front.

If you've got friendly folks who can work together on the job that would be best but this a significant thing, cosmetically as well as functionally. You'll want everything to be right. IMHO, HVAC guys do HVAC stuff. Roofing contractors do roofs. Atypical roof-type makes it even more important.

My HVAC contractor put my new gas fireplace and the roof vent in after we had the new roof put on. Bad timing, long story. DH and I have both looked at what they did up there and it looks fine to us. We've had no leaking. They will also install my new hood ducting, including the roof vent.

I think most HVAC contractors are used to installing these types of things with an established roof. It doesn't mean they're all good at it, but it's a routine practice. My roof is composite though so different than yours.

My HVAC people installed new ductwork and through the roof vent, upwards, for the new otr. We had 50 yr. old existing thru the roof vent before, but they competently installed new and better stuff.

The particular hvac company I now use is the best I have ever had in 34 years of owning this house. Fori, they seemed very familiar and experienced in going onto the roof. There was one trainee and one trainer.

In my experience, these hvac folks are brighter and have more technical knowledge than the roofers I have known. jmo.

LOL! We would certainly be in agreement about that!

However, since his roof is new and he's satisfied with it, and noting his concern about it unusual-ness in his area, I was assuming he would likely be trusting of those same people finishing up the roof after the HVAC people conclude.

I imagine you've already sorted this out, but in case not---we had a local roofer do ours (though my husband did the one for our bathroom vent quite successfully---we just had to patch an old chimney hole in the kitchen at the same time so decided to get it all done professionally). It was ridiculously cheap (though our roof is not shake and that might be a little more complex) and they color matched the cap to the roof for aesthetics. They squished us in between big jobs during rainy season and it only took an hour or two---easy peasy.

Our HVAC people were also happy to do it, but were planning to charge something like $500 to add it to our furnace job, which was nuts. They did a nice job on the caps they did do so I imagine they would have done fine with the hood as well, but in the end my husband opted to do all of the interior hood ductwork himself, and just attached it to the cap the roofer had put in.

Thanks all. I'm still trying to work out where I want my stove exactly (and if I should hold off for a complete kitchen gut altogether...). I do have a few extra bundles of shakes so matching the material isn't a problem.

I'm with asolo - new shake roof, no doubt in my mind I'd get the original roofer to do it. If only to keep any guarantee in tact.

If this were an asphalt shingle roof, I'd say that anyone could do it. But shakes require a bit more expertise. You could have the roofer come do it now before the hood is installed if you have an open attic. The vent pipe could then be attached to the cap from beneath. But you would perhaps need to know within a few feet where the vent pipe (and vent) are going to be located.

Good idea. My kitchen is small enough that the hood will be in a pretty limited area.

Or I could vent down. Then I could do it myself since the kitchen's latest incarnation has a downdraft.

But then I'd have a downdraft.
