Do I need Adobe Acrobat to receive pdf files?

I belong to a group that started sending monthly newsletters. The person sending this NL said it comes as a pdf file. I am not getting these as part of her emails. I have Adobe Reader but not AA. Do I need to download this program too or is there some other problem.

I'm using Vista Premium on a Toshiba Satellite A135 notebook. TIA for any help you can give me.

If all you want to do is view the .pdf then you should be able to start Adobe Reader and open the file after you've downloaded it. Have you checked your email to see if a .pdf is attached to it?

if there is a pdf it will be as an attachment to the email are you seeing a .pdf file listed up near the header or subject of the email? I personally would not open a pdf in email they can be infected, I save them to hard drive, scan them with antivirus and antimalware programs before ever opening them. Many many bad infections are being spread through pdf now and there are serious critical updates for adobe reader so be sure you have done your updates if you have it on your pc. Make it a habit to always scan any pdf file fully before opening it.

AR can be an absolute monster to remove. A free application called REVO is regularly recommended here for uninstalling. I would use it in the Advanced Mode. It first creates a restore point, uses the target application's uninstaller, and then searches the drive and registry for leftovers. With AR don't be surprised if there are many. You will have an option as to whether or not to delete the findings. There is no backup so the choice will be yours and lasting. Well I see these extra programs as just that. There are a few excellent free screen capture programs available but as I use print screen perhaps a dozen times a year so installing yet another program to do basically the same is out. Using print screen and Corel PhotoPaint I can snag, crop and add comments to anything in short order. Thanks for the link though cboy, I had not seen that particular program before.

Surprise. I didn't know pdf's could be viewed and printed using just FF. Thanks for the info Mikie. I subscribe to an online publication that updates weekly in pdf. I disabled PDF Viewer and gave it a test. Had no problem reading and printing info using just the FF viewer. As I'm sure others have found, it's worthwhile to read the threads even if they don't seem relevant to our situation. There's always something to be learned that we didn't even think to ask about.

Adobe is a corporation, not a product or a file format. PDF, which you states in the subject correctly, means "Portable Document Format" - it is the file format created by Adobe's Acrobat software (and many other programs since Adobe publishes the PDF specification). That file format is actually a meta format of sorts and can contain all sorts of information in it, including illustration file formats, text as well as bitmap graphics in various image formats. You can upload any file to a web host or file hosting service. Not all file types will display in someone's browser and certainly not all files will display inline on one of these forum messages. If you want to just include a text link to the file you can insert a standard HTML anchor tag pointing to the hosted file or you can use the "Optional Link URL" feature included at the bottom of the posting/edit box. If you would like an image to appear inside your post then you should send up a file in a format that will display properly in the majority of people's web browsers and can be used with the HTML "img" tag. Definitely not a TIFF. A JPEG or PNG is recommended. Depending on what software you're using to view or edit PDF files on your computer you may be able to Save or Export the images you want out of the file. Otherwise one very easy way is to do a screen or window capture while viewing the file. The resulting image can then be cropped if needed (to remove any desktop/window graphics that don't belong in the original photo). If this is all Greek to you, you might be better off just uploading the PDF as first mentioned and including its URL in the "Optional Link URL" below. As long as someone has a PDF plugin or viewer they'll be able to view it. Then maybe someone will be nice enough to strip out the pictures you want out of the file. That's what puzzles me, I don't see a pdf file listed. I've copied (see below)what I received from my contact. She says that she sends this email to about 50 addresses and I'm the only one that has a problem with it. There is no pdf icon anywhere in the email.

Sorry it's a little late, but here it is. The second page pertains to
our upcoming anniversary dance and a list of ideas and items we will
need for the decorations.

Just double click on to the pdf icon and it will open. If you want to
print it, just drag it on to your desktop and print from there.
Please let me know if you have trouble receiving and opening the file.

What E-Mail program are you using, outlook, yahoo, windows live mail

So do you think it could be an outlook problem where the Icon simply does not show? It's possible. Would it be to much trouble to set up a Yahoo e mail account just to see if it works. You could have her send it again possibly.

Wonder if your the only one using outlook in the group?

another option is that you have in your outlook settings to block certain file types and pdf may be one, have you ever received a pdf in that email client in the past?

I'm using Webmail. I couldn't find where to check for blocked files. I'll keep looking.

Webmail could be yahoo, gmail, hotmail or others. The pdf file is an attachment. It wouldn't show up in the body of the message that you posted but above it, below it or somewhere on the email screen.

Still had no success using Web Mail so I tried the yahoo. This worked! I don't understand why my Web Mail won't work. My senior challenged mind will just have to remember to check the yahoo mail regularly to get my mailings from my dance club. Thx so much for the help.
