Program to read PDF Files?

Okay, lets see if I can manage to sound somewhat intelligent asking this question.

My new laptop has Vista. Everytime I try to read a PDF file, a window pops up and tells me I have to buy Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional in order to read the document.

They want $400.00 dollars for this program!!!

Is there another solution? Another way to read these?

I know nothing about computers other than point and click so if this is a silly question I apologize in advance.

Adobe Reader 9.1 (freeware) would do it, I think.

Someone correct me if I am wrong.

I know I have the 9.1 version and it was free.

I don't know why you're getting that message. You don't need to buy Adobe Acrobat to read a PDF document. You can just download the free Adobe Reader. The versions of Adobe Acrobat that you have to pay for are for those who want to create fancy PDF documents. Also, there are many other free PDF readers available. The one I prefer and use is Foxit Reader, which would works at least as well as Adobe Reader and has a program only about 1/10 the size.

That's what puzzles me, I don't see a pdf file listed. I've copied (see below)what I received from my contact. She says that she sends this email to about 50 addresses and I'm the only one that has a problem with it. There is no pdf icon anywhere in the email. Subject: Come 'N Take It newsletter Date: Jan 28, 2010 4:10 PM Sorry it's a little late, but here it is. The second page pertains to our upcoming anniversary dance and a list of ideas and items we will need for the decorations. Thanks y'all and Yellow Rock! Just double click on to the pdf icon and it will open. If you want to print it, just drag it on to your desktop and print from there. yes you have to keep Ie it is part of windows and it is always best to have at least 2 browsers on the pc incase one should fail you always have an alternate. I use and love firefox, there are tons of great add-ons for it that make my life so much easier, try searching here on the forum for firefox and you will find a lot of info. Learn Firefox Ultimate List of Firefox 3 Tips and Tricks those should get you started, you will love the ease of use and the tabbed browsing. the add-ons I always suggest are adblock plus to prevent ads on pages and use the subscriptions on Ricks easylist page Adblock Plus 1.1.3 EasyList and EasyPrivacy after you have added adblock plus to your firefox and restarted it then go there and scroll down to the 2 yellow lines on the right it says add to ABP click on that for both to add to your adblock plus. I also like colored tabs ColorfulTabs 4.1 to help you surf safer and avoid dangerous sites WOT - Safe Browsing Tool 20091028 if you spend some time looking through the hundreds of add-ons you will find so many that make life easier.

Can a .doc file be Changed to a PDF. file?

There is also a free download called CutePDF writer. Once you download/install it shows up just like a printer so you go to print your document, select this option, and it creates a PDF file and saves it to your hard drive. We use this at work and I also use it at home.

I think it was one of those pre loaded programs. It gave me a 30 day trial and now that the 30 days are up, they want me to buy it.

foxit is an excellent program but watch out when you install it that you make sure you do NOT get the added toolbars and junk that it tries to get you to take you do not want those you just want the foxit program.

also if you use firefox browser there is an add on that you can get that will do the same thing for you. I would avoid adobe and use an alternate method.

I've been using an off brand Free pdf viewer... faster, smaller, less adobe headaches. There's even a Pro version Free too.
